Why don't the Rockets sign a Big Man?
I keep asking myself why don't the Rockest sign a big man to be a back up center/ power foward. This is a postion that really needs to be filled. I keep hearing people talk about Mt. Mutombo coming back but what can you do in the meantime. The Rockets are getting killed on the boards and no one is afraid to drive the lane against them. When Yao gets hurt what will they do? We all know he is going to be hurt again. Why not try to sign Antonio Mcdyess? Why don't they package the garbage and get a good big man. You got Luther Head, Stevie Francis, and Chuck Hayes all taking up roster space. Brent Barry an old three point threat that will sit the bench. They should of got a back up two guard for Mc Grady because you know he is hurt also. I just don't understand some of the logic in some of the decsion making. The Rockets are overloaded on small guards and short power fowards. Get some people that play well and size up. If the rockets were a fast break small ball team it would be different. The starting line up is good height wise but when the bench comes in they shrink. And right now the way they are playing stinks.

Here's the problem
Name one viable big man that is available?
McDyess is basically an old version of Carl Landry. They are both 6’9 and Landry actually outweighs him by a few pounds.
The backup 2 guard is Shane Battier/Ron Artest, that spot is clearly filled when Shane gets back.
I’m with you on the frustration, but the only thing out there is Dikembe, that’s really it.
There are a couple of D league guys I’m looking into, but other than that, there really is nothing

who would take our trash?
Who will trade for Head or Francis… ?
Not until February… when their salaries become bargaining chips. Right now they don’t help anyone else.
Hayes has value and is a favorite of Morey’s.
Barry isn’t going anywhere.
Patience… Deke will be back in February. Trust in boy genius Morey.

I know that this idea won't help this season but...
if your GM can find a way to pull it off then going after Hasheem Thabeet might just be the long term solution to your big man problems. I would love to hear form some of you just what you think of the idea.

I suspect that if there is any GM in the league who could pull off getting a potential top-10 draft pick
from the Rockets’ position, then it’s Daryl Morey. But remember that the Kings have the Rockets’ 1st round pick this year, and (barring a truly spectacular collapse), the Rockets will likely be drafting fairly late, anyways.
If Morey is able to do something of that sort, I imagine that it would be of the Steve Francis trade variety. Fortunately, Morey has a strong enough corps of solid bench players (all of whom are essentially interchangeable) that he has quite a lot with which he can bargain. But getting the rights to someone like Thabeet would probably require trading away several of those guys (Brooks, Landry, Scola, Hayes, Dorsey, etc.).

Thank You for your response...
especially reminding me that the Kings have the Rockets 1st round pick, that certainly complicates things. It would be great if Daryl Morey could pull it off without losing either Scola or Brooks (IMHO I think those guys should stay) but I guess it depends on how badly he wants to make a deal.

In the end,
I don’t think that trading for a guy like Thabeet would really fit with the Rockets’ organizational goals, anyways. Yao needs a backup, but I think the general feeling is that he will stay in Houston for his entire career. Yao is worth more than simply what he produces on the field – he makes the Rockets a great deal of money in China. A guy like Thabeet is way more than a backup, and unless the Rockets want to field a twin-towers system again (and why would we? We have some of the best power-forwards around) Thabeet’s production will be wasted on the bench. And the Rockets aren’t going to bench Yao or let him leave, for exactly the reasons stated above.
I think that, should Morey be looking for a long-term replacement, he’ll be looking at something less costly. That has been Morey’s strength (and, for that matter, the strength of any good GM): finding bargains. He’ll try to get someone like Scola – overlooked and overseas. I’m sure there is some international player out there whose rights are being held by a club who has little interest in calling him up. I think that’s the kind of guy we’d want for a backup. Cheap, effective, and (most importantly) cheap.

IMO
the Rockets need someone who is able to contribute right away. I’m not sure if a rookie would be able to fit the role of immediate backup center to a contender. .
Excitedly nervous in 08.

The only way
The only way to get a big man is via trade…the rockets can trade luther head and maybe steve francis (maybe expiring contract? not sure the contract) for a young big man…no need to trae for a 33 yeard old…get a young 25 year old backup C for yao and trade luther and francis

for who?
Not even Isiah Thomas would trade a big man for Francis and Head.

I know you are joking
But if we can get him for 4MM a year, I’d be over it in about 8 milliseconds

Yeah no doubt
So in 2012, when he’ll likely be dead, or taking robitussin because of a “heart episode” you want him?
