People who need a swift kick in the nuts: Bill "Sports Guy" Simmons
Just when I thought Sports Guy was regaining his fastball...
Just four weeks into the season, we're down to six contenders for the 2009 NBA title: Cleveland, Boston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Utah and San Antonio.
Hey, Simmons....... you can go fuck yourself! Houston is clearly a bigger and better candidate than New Orleans, Cleveland or San Antonio for the ring.

Cleveland is legit
There is no way the Rockets have a better chance at a ring than that team. Cleveland has the best player in the league and will probably add a player at some point this season. I definitely agree that if you’re going to include New Orleans as a title contender, you ought to include the Rockets, but Cleveland is going to be a tough, tough out in the playoffs. Not to mention the East provides a much easier path than the West, which should be considered as well.
And I don’t want any part of a SA team with Parker, Ginobili and Duncan healthy in the playoffs.
We would beat the Cavs in a series right now
Now if they actually pull off one or both of those trades he mentioned then I disagree. But this doesn’t even include the possibility that the Rockets really figure this offense out and play consistent defense.
We are the only team in the league that can run two elite defensive SFs at Lebron. And we won’t force him to pass, in fact, we’ll make him want to shoot. When he doesn’t get his team involved, the Cavs lose, plain and simple.
The Spurs are beat down, I’ll take them in the playoffs over the Hornets right now
The Cavs look like an elite team right now. Mo Williams and Delonte West have been great additions. Even if the trades don’t go down, the Cavs have an exceptional team.
We certainly can run two elite defenders at Lebron, but Lebron is the type of player that gives Shane doesn’t particularly defend well. Shane is great at positioning himself and getting in the way defensively, but Lebron is too strong and physical and doesn’t mind the contact. The Cavs in the past couple of seasons have not been a good offensive team, but this year they’re one of the best, and the Rockets are still way too inconsistent to consider them in the Cavs class right now.
I’d surely take a Spurs team with no Tony Parker and a barely playing Manu, but come playoffs time, assuming those three are healthy, I feel pretty confident that the Spurs will be the tougher out.
Simmons is a jerk
(Like calling the boy Jessie repeatedly for instance.) But, on the same token, he’s going to circle jerk, like every other writer, about LeBron repeatedly. The most interesting part of the column to me, was A, his Derrick Rose points, and B, his raving about Mike Dunleavy Sr.
No mistakes in the tango, darling. Not like life. It's simple. That's what makes the tango so great. If you make a mistake, and get tangled, you tango on
I don't think he's a jerk
I can’t say Simmons is a jerk, because I express my opinion in very similar ways. My problem with him is that he’s gotten very sloppy in his writing and editing. And his ego has gotten out of control. Name dropping Jimmy Kimmel for the 1,000th time was neither necessary nor funny.
I disagree with the jerkiness
Then again he’s taken more unnecessary potshots at Sactown for reasons I think that he’s simply offended the Kings nearly won a championship. I’m not really sure why I believe that, or still like him otherwise, but I do think that’s true. Oh well.

honestly
I honestly think we could destroy Cleveland, New Orleans, San Antonio and Utah in a playoff series TODAY. That’s without Battier, a banged up T-Mac, Yao limping and Artest still shooting 30%.
Yeah, Cleveland might get a money player with their expiring contracts. San Antonio might get healthy (unlikely). New Orleans might find someone to take pressure off CP3. And Utah … nah, Utah ain’t winnin’ shit.
I’m just geeked that I got to post a pic of a huge middle finger on my blog. It makes me laugh.
The middle finger was funny I'll give you that
(Still trying to figure out the KC Jones thing, but whatever. Nothing’s perfect.)

KC Jones
Ever since the mid-to-late 80s, every article or reference I’ve seen about KC Jones as a coach is more apologetic than reverent. He wasn’t horrible… but I do not think I have seen any piece of journalism that credits KC Jones with improving the Celtics due to his coaching ability.
That's fair Dave
I’m not saying youre stupid. (The Lawyer thing is hard to forgive, but I’m biased against trial lawyers. LIved with one growing up. Trials were always a bad time in my house.) It’s just that clearly KC jones being in the Hall is something that you believe is tangential to Horry being in the Hall.
So with that being said, I’m not sure KC belongs in the Hall. I’m very sure Russell belongs, Cousy (duh?), and Havlichek is also a no brainer. Red Auerbach is another one in that group. After that you would have to convince me any of those guys including KC belongs in the hall.
So, with that having been said, I don’t believe, while Horry’s impact was as great as it was, that Mr Horry belongs in the hall. Annoying as it is, 2 wrongs don’t make a right.

I love the enthusiasm
But we are not a better team than Cleveland right now. TMac isn’t just banged up. He looks washed up a lot of nights. I’m not sure how much you’ve seen Cleveland, but they are really, really good this season. In the past they’ve been a terrible offensive team despite Lebron, and right now they’re putting it together and are the best offensive team in the league, and they’re not bad defensively either. To say that we would destroy them is a huge stretch. And Utah even with how banged up they’ve been is still playing really well at home.
Utah at home...
Utah just lost to the Bulls at home (who are spunky, I will admit – Rose is a beast)
Cleveland I have watched I think 4 complete games of theirs so far. LeBron is a no-doubt MVP right now, but in a 7 game series, we could relatively easily neutralize Cleveland with Artest, Battier and even Landry/Scola on their bigs. Yao would destroy Z and Mo Williams would be nothing more than a better paid Flip Murray.
and I still would expect Mike Brown to get outcoached by Rick Adelman’s drunky son.
Utah's loss at home
D-Will and Boozer didn’t play. For once, that team seems to be having some injury woes.

Just read the Simmons column and what do you know, TDS has a measured and thoughtful response.
Anyhow, Houston hasn’t played like a contender yet this year, part of that is due to the truly unbalanced and brutal scheduling. ie ON Thursday TNT – Watch Yao, McGrady and Artest try their luck against Duncan, Shaq, and Kobe IN ONE NIGHT!!!! First game at 11am CST in San Antonio, 2nd Game at 5PM CST in Phoenix, and for the night cap, at 11PM CST at the Staples Center (with its weird lighting)!! Houston then comes home for one night against the Celtics, before heading off on a 6 game back-to-back east coast swing – On ESPN Friday!
It’s almost been that bad. And the effect of that schedule on a gimpy team is very real. Anyone notice how many fewer games the Lakers have played thus far? At one point they were 5 behind Houston in games played, though they’ve narrowed a bit recently.
what kills me...
Is that the Rockets have already beaten New Orleans (one of his 6), beaten Phoenix and Dallas and only lost to San Antonio because we got really dumb at precisely the wrong moment. To immediately dismiss our chances, but not dismiss Utah and San Antonio for similar reasons…. prompted the “F-U”.
