The Center Position on the Rockets...
There is something about the current situation at center for the Rockers I do not understand...
... I was checking out the list of overseas players who's rights are owned by the Rockets and I found 3 centers listed:
Frederic Weis, Venson Hamilton, and Serhiy Lishchuk.
Weis is age 32 & his height is listed as 7'2" and Lishchuk is age 27 & he's just a half inch under 7 feet tall. Hamilton is also 32 but he's a little shorter than 6'10'' tall.
I am curious why (given the problems Houston has had at center) why they didn't try to get any of these guys to join the team? Hamilton is kinda short for a center and his age is up there, I know. Weis was a former mid-first round pick and has the height but he is also past 30. Lishchuk is still fairly young and "tall enough" (I guess) to play center regular. But I never heard anything about the Rockets trying to bring any of these guys over. Instead, they trade for Anderson (a move I did agree with) while leaving the backup center position to a bunch of guys who may be too short to play there effectively for a lot of minutes.
Does anyone know why Houston didn't try to bring in any of these 3 guys I've mentioned? Is it because none of them are even good enough to make an NBA roster. Or is it about getting them out of their contracts with their teams overseas?
Anybody here know why none of these guys were brought over?

Well
They might be tall, but they aren’t very good. We’d rather have versatile, mobile big men if we are going to increase the tempo this year.

Then why even bother to retain their rights if they have zero NBA future?
Makes no sense.
Weis, in particular. Houston traded for his rights back in August of 2008. Why did they bother to, if he isn’t good enough to ever play for the team?
It just doesn’t make sense. My guess is that Weis IS at least good enough to play as a backup at center. But my gut tells me he may not want to play pro ball in the USA for some reason. What that reason is exactly, I do not know…

He's not good enough, and the rights are costing us nothing, + they are used as trading chips

Why would anyone trade for this guy if he has zero NBA value?
If he can’t play in the NBA, why bother having him? To trade? Why would another team want him if he can’t play for them?
Makes no sense to me at all…

It's not that he has zero
NBA value. It’s just apparent that the organization doesn’t think they’ll be cost effective to bring over here to America.
On the trading chips bit – just because we don’t think they’re worth much doesn’t mean they’re worth NOTHING. Who knows? We might be able to pawn them off someone…

Dunk of death
Frederic Weis is more well known for getting dunked on badly than being a guy who got drafted in the 1st rd and never coming to the nba.
Weis probably wouldn’t want to come to the states for that, and take a smaller role with the Rockets, he’s probably the starting center wherever he is.
The other guys, I’m sure Houston has kept an eye on them, hoping that they develop into serviceable players. They probably didn’t impress Houston enough to be offered a training camp spot.
