Bill Simmons' NBA season preview (Rockets)

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/part2/091023&sportCat=nba

Here's what he has for the Rockets. Daryl Morey ranks #12 in "Most Intriguing NBA People"

Star-divide

12. Daryl Morey
On paper, the Rockets look like a lottery team. Their best player (Yao) is gone for the year. Their second-best player is probably never going to be the same. Everyone else is a role player or an overachiever. But they do certain things really well: shoot threes, defend the hell out of perimeter guys, play unselfishly, pound the glass, stuff like that. It's one of those "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" teams. I am picking them to win 44 games and make the playoffs. Which brings me to my point: the '09 Rockets took the Lakers to a seventh game operating with half a salary cap (because Yao and T-Mac were out). The '10 Rockets start out with 80 percent of a cap because Yao is gone; that number might shrink if T-Mac can't successfully come back. And yet, I am still picking a hodgepodge group of non-All-Stars to win 44.

Why? Because of Morey (or as he's more affectionately known, Dork Elvis). He's been like a hot guy at a craps table for two solid years. Nobody else is nailing 85-90 percent of their moves big and small. Nobody. Since he's my friend, he's doing so well that I am starting to worry about a Bud Fox-like meltdown; right now he's at the point in "Wall Street" when the Talking Heads song is playing, his stock picks are hitting and he's decorating the fancy New York apartment with Daryl Hannah. We haven't gotten to the part when his ego swelled and he took on Gordon Gekko yet. And maybe that won't happen.

I just know this: He texted me last month that Chase Budinger was for real; two years ago, I would have mocked him. This year? I nodded. Absolutely. Chase Budinger. Why not? I have learned not to bet against Dork Elvis.

I'll go with that. If we can continue to play at an elite level at home like we did last year without T-Mac/Yao, and then McGrady can return and give us a huge offensive boost, we can up that win total to the upper 40s.

No cursing in title. No pirated material, such as links to online game streams. Thanks.

This got me fired up earlier.

I don’t think I’ve ever had more confidence in one of the Houston GMs. I think this could be a pretty fun season for us, and maybe we can get in the playoffs and give one of the favorites fits.

This season is a year to be devoted to…

… getting the young guys lots of playing time and NBA experience.

If the team does slide into the lottery, hopefully fate smiles on the team with a lucky ping pong ball & they can select a stud rookie in the next draft. Bring in the new guy (whoever he is) along with (hopefully) a healed-up Yao & maybe (if we are really lucky) one of the big ticket free agents that are coming available next summer.

Yao, one of the big free agents, & the lottery pick guy all together. Put this with the solid bunch of role players & bench guys already in place & maybe the 2009-2010 season will be the only “down” year the team has…

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.

you have clouded vision

your friendship with Morey has given you rose-colored glasses. Our starting point guard is an erratic volume gunner that teams will back off to limit his forays into the lane. As long as we have an nbdl player logging minutes at center (Hayes), we will be lucky to win 25 games this year. we are still suffering from the rudy gay/battier dumb deal. we now have essentially the same player ariza, except more atheleticism. no handle, so no scoring other than standstill jumpers. Andersen looks like a good pickup……have to see how he handles extended minutes against competition. imo, we got worse, other teams we won series against got better……i’d love to hear how you figure (honestly) we will get 44 wins.

dissection time

On paper, the Rockets look like a lottery team.

ahem….they are. you’re right.

Their best player (Yao) is gone for the year. Their second-best player is probably never going to be the same. Everyone else is a role player or an overachiever.

you’re on a hot streak now!

But they do certain things really well: shoot threes, defend the hell out of perimeter guys, play unselfishly, pound the glass, stuff like that. It’s one of those “whole is greater than the sum of its parts” teams.

for a minute there, you had me. if you’ve ever played or coached bball on a level above jr high, you would know that we will suffer defensively guarding perimeter players this year. pound the glass?? um with who? we don’t have glass eaters, or guys who can get rebounds out of their space/area……or we don’t have a rebounder who can get rebounds on sheer will (scola is the closest thing), intensity, heart and hard work. the guys on this team who hit threes last year, hit them because of dbl teams, not because they’re great three pt shooters…..and even so, they werent consistently hitting them then. hell, even when we had real 3 pt shooters on the championship teams, they weren’t always on, but they were legitimate shooters. K Smith, Mad Max, Horry, Elie, when games were on the line, these guys could and did hit the big shots.
unlike Battier….who shows up about every 8th game on the offensive end.
So we have had success when we do these things with Yao, TMac, but as you said, we have role players, and there has not been a team make the playoffs, or even come close without some legit stud capable of either running the show, or scoring/leading.

I am picking them to win 44 games and make the playoffs.

this bears repeating. I’ll go out on a tree and put that number @ one more in tune with reality. 25 wins if Tracy doesn’t make it back to anything resembling himself.

If he comes back and gels with the team……I give em 32 wins. Adelman gets COY if so. unofficially of course.

Which brings me to my point: the ’09 Rockets took the Lakers to a seventh game operating with half a salary cap (because Yao and T-Mac were out).

That inspired, impressive effort against a Laker team that hadn’t turned on the lights has no bearing on this year. None whatsoever.

The ‘10 Rockets start out with 80 percent of a cap because Yao is gone; that number might shrink if T-Mac can’t successfully come back. And yet, I am still picking a hodgepodge group of non-All-Stars to win 44.

I’m a lifelong fan, but my bball experience playing and coaching won’t allow me to ignore the obvious. You acknowledged these things, and for some reason…..you STILL see 44 wins. That, I would like to debate over a cold beverage with you.

Perimeter D?

Why is our perimeter D going to be bad? Keeping in mind that I have not coached at any level. And played pick up all my life which doesn’t really count.

All these boundaries - Africa, Asia, Malaysia, America - are set by men. But you don't have to look at boundaries when you are looking at a man - at the character of a man. The question is: What do you stand for? Are you a follower, or are you a leader? -Hakeem Olajuwon

simple

With Yao as the anchor, it allows guys like Battier and Ariza to freelance a bit more and direct opposing players right into Yao’s waiting arms for a blocked shot/rebound. Artest thrived on this last year. The big guy is always a good deterrent for an opposing player.

Contrast to this year, where without the big guy, Battier and Ariza will be forced to play a little bit “off” the man they are guarding because there is no Yao and no shot blocking presence, so they can’t gamble and let anyone get passed or behind them. Thus, the aggressiveness factor is dialed down. Making it easier for perimeter players to maneuver.

(it will also hurt our defensive rebounding and positioning because our defensive guys will constantly be scrambling to double team the opposing player with the ball).

The only way I see them making up for that is…

… by hustling all the time on defense. It ain’t as good as having Yao or Mutombo in there but unless the team can somehow swing a trade for a shot blocker, it will have to do…
