Portland Trail Blazers at Houston Rockets, Oct 31, 2009 7:30 PM CDT
Sorry everyone, not going to be able to get a game preview up. However, it's the same team we played on Tuesday and got walloped by. This time it's in the home opener on Halloween. I'd expect the best part of the night will be the outfits the Rockets Power Dancers wear. That said, it will be a closer game. Portland by 5
Here is the TSN Trail Blazers vs Rockets preview
As always, check out the awesome Blazersedge

Take THIS, Portland!
Blazers fans and Rockets fans (myself included) always have such mutual respect for each others’ teams. So with that I say…..let it be a well played, enjoyable game with no injuries that the Rockets win in a non-controversial, non-heartbreaking fashion that gives both teams reason to feel good about the rest of the season. En garde!

I'm not feeling good about this game

You left out the 2 in front of your 5 when you were predicting the margin the Blazers
win by. JK………Between playoffs last year and this early season this is like my second home. Im just glad we are getting you guys b4 you figure out what to do without Yao and get Mcgrady back.

Just FYI
I’d take Ariza over Artest any day of the week…

well depends on what you need. It seems like houston needs somebody who can
create their own shot right now.

Taking a shot is not the same as creating a shot. Artest cannot create his own shot any more than Ariza can.

i'm feelin' it for the rockets tonight
despite the season opener, i think we still have Portland’s number. Actually, I think we sort of figured them out a bit in the 3rd and 4th quarter of that game. Plus, Outlaw can’t be that hot again…well, at least not with Scola being that cold at the same time. With the momentum coming off the Golden State win (coupled with an unquantifiable x-factor of Houston home intensity), I think the Rockets take this one in heartbreak fashion (unfortunately for Blazers fans) by 3. Really hoping to see the Chase Butt-itcher factor explode on this one, too.
by whitstyle on Oct 31, 2009 5:52 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Scola didnt seem as cold as he just didnt get to attempt any shots.
Blazers are kinda hoping that even if Outlaw one of our other bench guys can show up like he did that game. Last game it was rudy for 22 points.
Yeah…little known fact…..it never gets mentioned……Chase played volyball in highschool.
by tevisthe4th on Oct 31, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Scola didn't seem to be into that game
I expect him to come out with a bit more fire in his belly… Houston has a problem trying to match up to Portland’s size. Brooks help negate some of that with his quickness. I think if Oden can take care of the ball a bit better this time he could be real trouble for Landry

Yeah oden's possessions against denver didnt instill any confidence that he is gonna
take care of the ball. Hopefully its just nerves..stuff he will get over soon. I just worry nerves will get him again come playoff time.

I respect Dreamshake and its base…
nice win for your boys.. they deserved it… Hot shooting night and heady play didn’t ever allow the PTB to really get back into the game… I think Houston’s lack of size is going to eventually be a concern, but so far it’s scored two wins out of three. We’re even. Best of luck.

why is Blake still starting? Miller is the better PG and should be playing 30+ minutes a game.
by goingforthecorner on Oct 31, 2009 10:55 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
it's a ongoing debate at BE
appears the thinking is Blake fits on better with the first unit due to familiarity and his shooting can spread the floor better for Roy.
Miller lacks the outside threat but can help set up Rudy and Outlaw and Webster for that matter but since Batum’s injury that part of it changed.
Some believe Miller will be starting eventually.
World's phoniest apology-- "I'm sorry."
by bow4meow on Oct 31, 2009 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Im not so sure it's clear cut.
Portland’s 2nd unit is very talented, and Miller makes them deadly. Portland pulled away from us in the first game with Miller and the second unit in the 2nd quarter. The rest of the game was even, or favored Houston. That’s a devastating weapon.
Also, with the (slowish) pace of the Portland offense, does it really improve things to have Miller run it, except for his ability to create his own shot. And why would you want him to create his own shot over Roy or Aldridge, or maybe even Webster?
If the Red Nation apparatchiks start talking about a Five Year Plan, I'm out of here.

From what I think I see
there’s always been an air of mistrust about Blake’s game. Fans are constantly clamoring for an upgrade at the point. When the Hienrich trade never materialized, it left many fans believing Miller is the solution. I don’t know yet. Blake has the outside shot but Miller is a far better playmaker. Eventually I see Miller taking the reigns.
World's phoniest apology-- "I'm sorry."
by bow4meow on Nov 1, 2009 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I suppose so.
With Roy able to run the point when needed, it seems like you need a stopper more than you need a PG like Miller. Miller is versatile and talented, no doubt, and yet, there’s something I mistrust more about him and his game.
Miller always seems to be on a bad team, or in a bad situation. He’s the Abdur-Raheem of point guards – undeniable talent, good stats, and yet… He doesn’t have the air of a KG, a guy who was just dying to get to the right spot, who did all he could. I don’t know why it seems that way, and maybe its unfair, but that’s my perception of him, anyway.
If Steve Blake is the question, I’m not sure Andre Miller is the answer. Why not try Bayless? You’d be running two guys who can score and handle the ball in the backcourt – that’s hard to stop.

I think they’re keeping Blake because he knows the system better.
Miller made a coupla big mistakes at the end of the game.
by VBG on Oct 31, 2009 11:16 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I love the makeup of this team...
Sure, we’re undermanned, but everyone hustles, knows their role and plays in control. The ball doesn’t get bogged down as it did sometimes last season with Ron Ron, and there are no wild shots, a la Von Wafer. There are going to be rough spots with no legitimate go to guy as of yet, and late game offensive possessions could be ugly, but all in all, splitting the home and home with POR and winning in GS’ home opener is a solid if not great way to start the season.

Just caught the last quarter on replay.
Wow, nice night for Ariza, and Brooks. Every game we win over a team that is fielding superior talent (and Portland can say that to most teams they play) is a big one for us.
This Rockets team is surprising some people, but I think a little faith is warranted. Portland has a big frontcourt, and that didn’t do us in.
Also, those runs Roy gets on are sort of unbelievable.
Another thought. Wow. How many top 10 picks does Portland field anyway? Lessee – Roy(6), Oden(1), Aldridge(2), Webster(8), Miller(8), Pryzbilla (9). I’ll throw in Bayless at 11, and Juwon Howard once went #5. Any more?
Houston – Battier (6). That’s it. (Except for Yao and TMac of course.)

Welcome, world, to Rockets brand of basketball!!!
Woohoo! what a great win. Daryl Morey must be grinning from ear to ear as his “experiment” is yielding positive results so early. I thought I would never get to watch a Rockets game this season over here in the Philippines, but was pleasantly surprised that free TV was covering this game that I was waiting for.
Undersized, undermanned, but we showed we are fast learners from our opening game in Portland. That’s even with the “partida” (advantage) we gave them with Scola and Chase having a cold shooting night. Our defense inside was solid—love that Chuck Hayes and Carl Landry and even Shane Battier inside. And what about the movement helping out.
We scored when we had great offensive movement. But this game we also scored when we had to go one-on-one. Trevor Ariza and Aaron Brooks are showing they deserve our trust. Congrats to everyone for just great effort and focus.
So we don’t have a reliable go-to guy at the end. This is one way to win it. Get a good enough lead and hang on with sheer willpower … :-) THAT"S WHY I LOVE THIS TEAM!
by RoxBeliever on Nov 1, 2009 12:34 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
A big difference
is where Ariza is getting the ball, it seems. He can’t get it in the teeth of the defense and expect to score, but the way they moved him around, and fed him the ball, made him very dangerous.
Good comments – convert more people in the Phillipines to the Rockets fandom!
Also – Adelman is, it appears, a good coach. He’s awake, because he has to be.

It certainly looks that way right now.
I thought this was a deal that would pay off over the next couple of years, not in the first couple of games. I guess the Rockets weren’t lying when they told Ariza they saw a much bigger role for him. He’s not without flaws, but so far, so good.

After we got Ariza, an analysis on Silver Screen and Roll said that Houston was the only team in the NBA who thought Ariza could be more than a role player. It reminds me of shows like House and the Mentalist. The protagonist uses extremely unorthodox methods, but he is always right, even when everyone thinks he is wrong. But the next week, the second he does something unorthodox, his history of success is throw out the window and the criticisms come back. Its the same with Morey. No matter how many times he was right in the past, nobody is willing to take the leap that he might be right on Ariza.

Under-rated
I’m beginning to think Landry might be one of the most under-rated guards in the NBA.
by NeoSabonis on Nov 1, 2009 7:50 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Ariza had a great game
but I think I’d take Landry. He’s got muscle, he’s fearless, and most importantly, he almost always makes the smart play. That’s rare…. Unless Ariza proves he can shoot that well consistently, I think Landry is the better player. With Batum/Bowen/Artest on Ariza, he probably won’t put up those numbers. Blazers perimeter D was pre-season quality, so don’t get your hopes up for the next game.
by NeoSabonis on Nov 1, 2009 7:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Hi Neo, nice to see the stache still flys proudly.
The only drawback to Lowry is that he’s not 6’3" and the 3pt shot is just slightly out of his range. But he lives to draw fouls and makes a nice counterpoint to Brooks, and is only slightly slower.
Ah, I like what I’m seeing from Ariza. The guys who can get big points on the best perimeter defenders are rare. If Ariza just makes intelligent decisions when facing them, I’ll be satisfied. Most perimeter players mail it in on D, and Ariza is a big guard, so he’s going to be able to shoot most nights. Drive? Well, it’s a matter of taking low hanging fruit and not forcing it. And hey, Batum isn’t really an issue this year, unfortunately.
