Looks to be the best 2 million dollars they ever spent…

Draft day steal
The thing that really gets me is that not only was everyone else sleeping on Budinger, the Rockets kinda slept on him too. Every time during the summer when Morey or Adelman would say “Budinger is the real deal” I was wondering why they weren’t worried someone would take him higher than 44th, since they decided to use 2 of the 12 picks immediately before Budinger.on other players. Or how much realer of a deal Jermaine Taylor would be if the Rockets ever decide to play him.
Were they just so certain the Budinger wouldn’t be drafted that they felt they should lock up Llull and Taylor first? Or did they just get lucky?
I guess I really don’t care that much as long as he keeps lighting up the court.

Can anyone name the rookies that are doing better than “Bud” is so far?
Betcha the list is REALLY short.
I know it’s very early but how’s about “Chase Budinger for Rookie of the Year”?
Wouldn’t THAT be a kick in the pants?

I thinking that during the game, and I cannot imagine Budinger getting ROY. Even if Jennings doesn’t keep up his pace, Tyreke Evans doesn’t step it up while Martin’s out, and Blake Griffin only plays 35 games….Budinger’s career high in minutes so far is 22. And I don’t see it going much higher.
He’s basically competing for SG/SF minutes with Ariza/Lowry/Battier, not including any of the PFs that want to play small. Ariza and Lowry are young enough to get development PT even if the season turns sour, and I can’t see them sitting Battier much. Plus, once McGrady gets back they’ll probably want to either utilize him or showcase him for a trade.
So no matter how good he is, I don’t see him averaging more than 15-20 minutes a game all season. And that does not a ROY make.

I think Bud may make it hard for Adelman not to increase his minutes regardless…

I would think that too, but “regardless” has to come from somewhere. Right now he’s averaging 16 minutes a game, and I could see him picking up a couple from Ariza and Battier, but he’ll lose those again once McGrady comes back. He’d have to double his playing time to really be able to put up ROY numbers, and everyone else on the committee needs their PT as well.
For fun: even Aaron Brooks averaged only 25 minutes a game last year, and Budinger’s farther down the depth chart than he was.

I think we can all agree
That it’s a nice problem to have.

good point
I agree, for the most part. Lowry is getting 24min/game, and that could go down. Lowry is young, but I don’t think the Rockets are trying to develop him into a long-term starter on this team. He’s going to get minutes backing up Brooks, but Budinger could reduce the use of the 2-PG lineup. But other than that, yes, Ariza and Battier’s minutes aren’t going down, nor should they. And the Brooks/Budinger backcourt has problems because they’re both soft and somewhat defensive liabilities, especially if the opponents have a bigger PG.

Brandon Jennings is doing pretty well
And so is Tyreke Evans, but Bud may be at the top of that ROY list right now.

If “Bud” keeps playing at least this good all year…
… I can’t see how they don’t give him the award.
And I think he may actually play even BETTER than this as time goes by this season…

hope they give it to a contributing rookie in a winning team this time.
Yes, I am prematurely declaring houston to become a winning team.
I also hope that the lack of superstars help his case. until McGrady comes back I guess.

Remember, all it takes to be considered a “winning team” is 42 wins…

Sure...
Houston is winning now, but they haven’t played any winning teams. Oh, wait…
by seanbergmanrules on Nov 7, 2009 12:48 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, the teams they’ve beat are no better than 3-3…
… but I am sure that the Jazz will have a winning record by season’s end. Chances are so will the Blazers. And though it is something of a longshot, I won’t be totally stunned if Golden State wins 42 games…

Absolutely
The Rockets were supposed to have a very difficult start to the season. I remember a lot of the commentators worrying that it would take the team a few weeks to gel and that they would have to overcome an 0-6 start (since everyone but Golden State should be above .500 by the year end). Now that they’re a robust 4-2, this bodes really well for the weaker stretches of the schedule later on.

Remember what Charles Barkley said about this season’s Rockets?

I like Charles most of the time but he needs to be quiet sometimes because he doesn’t always know what the heck he’s talking about…

at first i didnt think budinger was worthy.....
to wear #10, and that still remains to be seen, but i really like this kids game and think he will contribute alot to the success of the rockets. were going to shock alot of ppl before this season is done and over with.

hey...
If they can give Gerald Green Robert Horry’s #25… giving Budinger Sam Cassell’s #10 isn’t that insulting… besides, this isn’t soccer, so the 10 jersey doesn’t have additional meaning beyond that.
by grungedave on Nov 8, 2009 9:55 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
it doesnt seem....
that insulting b/c the kid is playing well, and i think he will continue to do so, he doesnt look like a rookie at all besides the here and theres that come with it. but just saying, cassell was an instant spark in his rookie year that helped lead us to the championship. and i didnt say he couldnt wear it or that it was an insult, im just saying that he better make it proud. cassell was something special during his time here with the rockets and was a huge disappointment when we let him go. and if by any chance anybody knows where i can find a cassell rockets jersey for sale, would appreciate it.

I love Chase. Being an alum of Arizona, I love watching him play. He’s so effortless out there.
