What do you remember about the Rockets in the 2000s?

Help me out, folks.  I'm beginning to put together a post on the best of the Rockets in the last decade, and could use some assistance.  So, if you could, please post your favorite moments, plays, or anything memorable about the Rockets in the comments section.  Preferably pre-2007; it's harder to remember the good ol' days of Francis, Mobely, and... Cato.

Much thanks.

winning the lottery

and getting Yao.

Also, Jan. 17, 2003, the first time Yao faced Shaq in Houston. Yao dominated Shaq in the first 5 minutes, but Shaq took over and ended with 31-13. Kobe had a horrible game, and when the Rockets fouled him with less than 10 seconds left and the Lakers up 2, me went 1-2 from the line. The Rockets ran that set play where Steve Francis got the ball at the top of the key off a Yao screen, and he hit the game tying 3. I was never a Steve Francis fan, but that night he was otherworldly. 44 points, 11 assists, and 6 rebounds, and led the Rockets to an OT victory in Houston.

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

Tracy McGrady's dunk on Shawn Bradley

And then the screwing of the Rockets by the NBA

Yes

Game 5 in the first round vs. the Mavs should get similar attention to the Dwayne Wade “I’ll get every foul call” game 3 in 2006 and the game 6 of Kings-Lakers WCF when the Lakers got like 30 free throws in the 4th quarter.

I mean, MICHAEL FINLEY WAS STANDING OUT OF BOUNDS!!! How do you miss that?

that whole series was ridiculous

Cuban bitched to Stern. Since Cuban was whining about “moving picks,” all of a sudden Yao was getting charged with the most absurd moving pick violations. That whole thing was a disgrace. The Finley debacle was horrible, but it didn’t stink of league-office tampering.

I was on 1560 with Tim Donaghey last week and we asked him about it

He was pretty clear that the NBA required them to look at the Rockets differently in that series, specifically Yao.

I didn't think it reeked of tampering

until the Donaghy thing, but I can definitely say it was the worst-officiated series the Rockets have ever been in, tampering or not.

I missed that.

Wow. Well, it certainly confirms a suspicion I’ve long held.

The question is, what is to be done about this crap? I suppose nothing, but it would be nice for Stern not to have his freaking thumb on the scale all the time. It’s really past time he went out to pasture, and some honest non-entity was put in his place.

Steve Francis’ unfulfilled potential.
Jeff Van Gundy’s defense.
The T-Mac trade.
22 game winning streak.
Daryl Morey.
The maturation of CARL!
This years team.

For me, however, the best part of the decade was definitely our series with the lakers last year where we managed to take them to 7 games without Yao.

The 2004-2005 team...

…featuring the White Boy Power Squad (credit for the name goes to Matt Jackson, I think): Scott Padgett, Jon Barry and Bob Sura.

If memory serves, they put together a pretty solid run to close out the season and claw their way into the fifth seed.

I’m still trying to forget Game 7, though.

To be honest, the oughts are bittersweet at best for me.

So many dreams that just sort of faded away.

Stevie Franchise
Eddie Griffin (RIP)
Signings that didn’t quite go the way we hoped: TMac, Cato, Taylor.
Bad, bad draft picks.
JVG – sorry, I respect him, but I hope I’m never forced to root for a team he coaches again.

However, the end of the 00s is reason for optimism. I think we have the best GM in the game, and we’re loading the team with talent, and in every possible way. The current Rockets are one of the most enjoyable NBA teams I’ve ever watched. Yao is not old, and could be healthy, and rested, for the first time, well, ever. The future is bright.

Before this post dies:

Let’s not forget Donte Greene’s 40-point summer league game. After he was traded to Sacramento for Artest, I think Dave called it “the most important summer game in the history of the league.”
