Nevar 4get!

There isn't much need for a game preview as this is game 3 of the series of the year and it's only December.  Let's go out there and kick some butt

Hopefully, its a close game

2005 playoffs

Closing seconds of Game 5, Michael Finley tries to steal the ball from Jon Barry beneath the Mavs basket. He does so, but he was obviously out of bounds. The refs, being blind, did not notice.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

Oh thanks

So that’s the reason Jon Barry doesn’t like the Mavs one bit.

by mg4tx on Dec 18, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

that

and he’s a decent human being

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 7:50 PM CST up reply actions

Ugly start.

Not a great sign that I wince when I see Ariza put up a three. I hope he changes that soon.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 7:48 PM CST reply actions

Cowboys games used to be that way.

The only thing I can compare this arena to is LA, but LA gets involved with good contests. Maybe Dallas doesn’t think this is one?

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

oh yeah

because the Toyota Center is really rockin’, right?

Though, I guess despite the Grand Houston Tradition of showing up late and intoxicated, we actually do get up during games.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, there's the late thing,

but for some people – how do you

Get off work at 5:30
Drive to the Woodlands/Sugarland/Clear Lake
Collect your kids
Drive Back Downtown

Before 7:15?

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 8:22 PM CST up reply actions

Wow, I can’t tell the difference between T-Mac and Ariza.

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 8:03 PM CST reply actions

I was thinking the same thing.

And with the number switch, its even weirder.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

24-22.

If we don’t grab a rebound their lead is gonna extend.

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 8:09 PM CST reply actions

Grab is right.

There have been two or three that just slipped off our hands out of bounds.

by Moondebah on Dec 18, 2009 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

Turnover

on every other possession! FFS!

by RocketsAstros on Dec 18, 2009 8:18 PM CST reply actions

Finally

we got some rebounding and took the lead!

by RocketsAstros on Dec 18, 2009 8:20 PM CST reply actions

Lowry playing really well right now.

Andersen’s three was ugly though

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 8:20 PM CST reply actions

wow

landry out with 3 broken teeth, that sucks. think he’ll be back tonight?

by jroberts5 on Dec 18, 2009 8:22 PM CST reply actions

Poor Landry

Keeps getting hit in the mouth and losing teeth.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

no shit

this is – what – the third or fourth time? He lost several in practice when Deke elbowed him, then he lost the replacements against Utah in ’08…

And then he got shot. Carl is either profoundly unlucky or (as Dave argued) very, very lucky.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 8:30 PM CST up reply actions

Sure he'll be in

Landry is just that badass.

Minnesotan Rockets fan

by Barragan on Dec 18, 2009 8:23 PM CST reply actions

Andersen looks a lot more comfortable offensively. A defensive mistake by him though

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 8:26 PM CST reply actions

jw

when yao comes back next yr and andersen is backing him up, then landry and luis play the 4, what role will hayes play?

by jroberts5 on Dec 18, 2009 8:27 PM CST reply actions

I presume

the same role he played last season with Deke available: defensive specialist off the bench.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

DAMMIT. WE HAVE A DOUBLE DIGIT LEAD.

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 8:30 PM CST reply actions

im in the dallas area watching the game

the dallas announcers just flipped a shit on that dampier call, haha

by jroberts5 on Dec 18, 2009 8:33 PM CST reply actions

Nice dunk by Ariza

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 8:37 PM CST reply actions

Landry has apparently left the arena

and it doesn’t look like Dirk is returning. Both teams missing their best players…

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 8:48 PM CST reply actions

Watching this game in Manila ... DALLAS IS DUE FOR A BAD GAME AGAINST US

Monster game from Lowry, he steadied us. Andersen, don’t play so soft. We need you with Landry out (does he wear a mouthguard; this is the second time he will lose teeth). The perimeter guys are not shooting threes, including Chase. Must be a game plan because they’re pushing the ball inside the paint.

I must say TMac was moving well earlier and even defended well. This is my first time to watch him back. The way he plays fits our game.

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 8:52 PM CST reply actions

on replay

no, he wasn’t in the restricted area. Fucked if I know.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

According to Mavs announcers...

Dirk has chunks of tooth inside his elbow.

by Moondebah on Dec 18, 2009 9:00 PM CST reply actions

That's just horrible.

Poor Landry.

I hope modern dentistry can come through for him again.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

"America's team"

Fucking hell, Bill, STFU or move to Dallas.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 9:05 PM CST reply actions

holy shit

Ariza’s getting calls in the paint

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 9:06 PM CST reply actions

Ariza making free throws is even stranger

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 9:08 PM CST up reply actions

Dallas play is faster than ours. That's the way we ought to play.

Yes, we are not looking for 3s but pushing the ball in. Trevor should take advantage of his athleticism around the basket.

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 9:11 PM CST reply actions

We haven't taken a 3

this quarter. Mavs are outscoring us 4 points, mostly due to Barea’s spurt of 2 3s and a long jumper.

by RocketsAstros on Dec 18, 2009 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

What a bad travel by Ariza

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 9:14 PM CST reply actions

73-65. We should hold on

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 9:18 PM CST reply actions

is this a predictive statement ("It ought to rain tomorrow")

or an imperative statement (“I ought to tell the truth”)?

Because the latter I agree with, but nothing in my life as a Rockets fan prepares me to endorse the former.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

Things back to normal. 2 fouls on Bundinger in a 5 second span.

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions

Horrible foul by Lowry

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 9:25 PM CST reply actions

3 by Brooks. Steal by Lowry. Nice job by them.

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 9:31 PM CST reply actions

Dallas is falling apart

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 9:42 PM CST reply actions

ANOTHER FOUL. WOW

Gosh, get a shooter in there. Lowry must be dead tired

Bad decision for AB to drive against Dallas bigs. Pull up would have been better

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 10:00 PM CST reply actions

ANother Technical. Thanks Howard. Thanks Lowry for missing

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:04 PM CST reply actions

what was Howard smoking?

but we’ll take it. thanks Josh.

don't bully me, i am from the D(etroit)!!!

by wanderboy on Dec 18, 2009 10:04 PM CST reply actions

Cold 3 pointer by Brooks. Lovely shot. Got carried away though

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:06 PM CST reply actions

Is it just me or has Ariza played a supremely quiet 42 minutes?

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions

He's had a good game, I'd say.

He was crucial in the 3rd, he’s passed up bad shots and generally played a solid game. No criticism of Trevor tonight.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

Every shot by AB seems to be a dagger

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions

totally possible....

i mean AB is only 200 lb lighter, 1 ft shorter. sure, he kick Dampier’s ass…

don't bully me, i am from the D(etroit)!!!

by wanderboy on Dec 18, 2009 10:13 PM CST up reply actions

Aaron ... let him score

if you’re already beat, let him score. Mental mistakes

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 10:13 PM CST reply actions

It's not - Dampier can't shoot FT.

It was a smart play if the refs weren’t being utter idiots.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

Watching on Gamecast

Aaron brooks had a flagrant foul on Erick Dampier.

wut.

I mean, I know Ericka is a pussy, but what the heck happened?

Minnesotan Rockets fan

by Barragan on Dec 18, 2009 10:14 PM CST reply actions

He basically stopped Dampier from dunking.

He did what happens to Dwight Howard every other play.

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

okay,

so there’s a tech on Dampier, and then AB gets a flagrant

Which is utter bullshit

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 10:17 PM CST reply actions

What a crap flagrant!

by MadMartygan on Dec 18, 2009 10:20 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

So I guess tech but a flagrant on abz.

by MadMartygan on Dec 18, 2009 10:19 PM CST via mobile reply actions

:27.7 DAL – Technical foul
:27.7 DAL – Full timeout (Timeout #8)

Eh? Did Dallas run out of timeouts and called one anyway or something?

by Jeffrey on Dec 18, 2009 10:21 PM CST reply actions

Another tech? Wow

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:21 PM CST reply actions

Now another T? Really? Really? This is so weird and bad.

We need it to even things out, but I’d prefer not to have any official nightmares.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:21 PM CST reply actions

5th tech today for them

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:22 PM CST up reply actions

In terms of foul severity:

Kidd > Tim Thomas (defence of Kidd, uncalled) > Brooks > Dampier 2 > Dampier 1

by Moondebah on Dec 18, 2009 10:23 PM CST reply actions

Iced. It’s nice to win against dallas.

by VBG on Dec 18, 2009 10:24 PM CST reply actions

Dallas beat themselves hehe. But what monster games from Lowry and AB

yeah we may be up and down this season. But we do have a special team

Headlines in Dallas: "Mavs Implode After Losing Nowitzki"

And Rockets explode (all over their faces) after Nowitzki’s elbow takes some more of Landry’s teeth.

by jtothet on Dec 18, 2009 10:27 PM CST reply actions

The Ref crew was very sensitive tonight.

Everything was a technical.

Even though, really, only a couple of things were technicals.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

care to explain?

he got a technical on complaining

when AB saved the ball on the baseline and then Lowry got a layup as time expired. That iced the game for us, giving us 8pt lead inside the last minute

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

it was Carlisle's 2nd T of the game

thats why he was ejected

Other than the breakaway call,

I’m wondering what really might have turned the game. No doubt they forgot the got into the penalty 2 (two!) minutes into the 4th, and it was a bunch of ticky tack reach calls that got them into overtime.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

Christ,

the Rockets couldn’t get a call through the first half, Kidd should’ve been out of the game, and Hayes, Battier, and Scola kept getting hit with ridiculous calls. Then Dallas decided to melt the fuck down. Give me a break.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with you.

I’m just saying, Dallas is certainly going to give the refs, not the Rockets, credit for this one.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:34 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, I know you agree with me

I was responding to your hypothetical (though realized over at MM) argument.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 10:35 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, the refs gave us a bad deal early in the foul, calling a bunch of soft fouls.

Then they turn on Dallas.

Okay, I change my mind. It’s a fairly called game. The refs suck all around.

Lucky we kept our poise and took advantage. Dallas had a melt down

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 10:39 PM CST up reply actions

It was a badly called game.

Mavs are put it out it didn’t go their way at the end, but it certainly did for most of the game.

Most of the Techs were silly. And besides, Kidd should have been gone, but they’ll never admit that.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:41 PM CST up reply actions

They feel jobbed.

I’d say the game wasn’t taken out of their hands, they had a lot of help from the refs too. But seriously, that was just bizarre officiating. The worst thing, Kidd (and the Dampier follow up elbow) is basically ignored, but Ts for nearly everyone else.

Still, Dallas whines a ton, so its nice to see them called on it.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

Have you noticed?

We won vs LA with Gasol out. Oden gets injured against us, Billups too, and now Dirk.

Somebody up there is on our side

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 10:30 PM CST reply actions

I think

we would be better served if that effort were turned towards miraculously healing Yao

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 10:31 PM CST up reply actions

Still in process

I must say if TMac continues with a team-first attitude, I like him for our team. We can keep him. His off the ball movement is better than Ariza’s. Both Trevor and Chase can learn from him

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 10:36 PM CST up reply actions

sorry guys i missed the game.

why did dirk elbow landry? was it because landry owned him because dirk is a skinny bitch and landry is a monster?

no shit

if Dirk were on any other team (well, except for Utah, natch) I’d love him.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 18, 2009 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

Dallas was incredibly whiny tonight. The refs were overzealous.

But it started with the breakaway foul on Lowry. I noticed twice Lowry hollering to the refs when he was fouled to get their attention. The first one was the late call on Dampier I think in the first half.

All our players should learn from that so the refs will call.

I saw a horrible flop by Scola which led to a Dallas lay-up. Stop that and defend.

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 10:34 PM CST reply actions

it's scola

i hate to say this but what do you expect, he is a flopper.

Why did I not see Rockets for life there after you lost to us but yet hes there starting crap tonight? Seriously , you might want to look with unbiased eyes. I know he will say he was there being nice. Fans get emotional on here and he knows that will get them going.

atleast most are I think. But hey thats asking to much huh. But they shouldn’t act as if they do no wrong when going to another blog where the fans are outraged and then wonder why they aren’t getting the pleasant welcome’s.

You don't owe him being pleasant.

I just thought you guys went ballistic over relatively minor stuff. I know what you mean though. Still, we got fairly hardened dealing with the Laker trolls in the playoffs last year, so it could be that stuff affects us less now.

I've read some pretty unpleasant things from here too

So we can agree all fans get outraged and say bad things. I live in Houston now , in El Lago, and I have met some Houston fans that can get very vulgar just over a normal debate lol.

No doubt about it.

This board usually has a pretty high standard, but like MMB, we can get worked up, and say things we might not ordinarily say.

And I lived in Dallas for 7 years, so I have some fondness for the teams, and some people. I don’t particularly yearn to return, though. I’ve really rarely seen fans more abusive than riled up Cowboys fans, unless it was the way the White Sox treated Astros fans in Chicago. Truly horrendous, that was.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

You've never been to a Cowboy game with Eagle fans shouting prfanity at you the whole game then.

They have some of the most vulger fans ever. Texas fans are to me some of the most calm fans. We are diehard but usually we can agree to disagree on our opinioniated debates.

look, I'm not going to ban or warn him or anything

because he hasn’t violated any of our policies. I’m not going to punish somebody for what they do elsewhere. If somebody keeps getting into problems at another SBN site, then I (and the other writers here) am less likely to be lenient towards infractions here, but that’s all. With that said, I’d prefer it if our fans didn’t go over to other sites to start shit, simply because it’s something I don’t like being done at the Dream Shake.

Take it from somebody who has spent a lot of time on the internet riling people up – the best way to “police” this, as a commenter, is to simply not respond if you think he’s doing this just to get to you. If you don’t think that’s the case – if what he’s saying simply bothers you, but you don’t think he’s just trying to stir up problems – then argue against his points civilly.

I'm just glad we got one back against the Mavs

after they beat us bad in the past 2 match-ups. Coach did a good job of adjusting, putting Lowry in early the first and I think all throughout the 2nd half and overtime.

Take a look at how crazily similar the two teams' boxscore stats are

FGA: both had 95
TO: both had 16
Threes: both shot 8-20
FTA: Dallas had 27, Houston had 26, both hit 20
Dallas rebounded better (Kidd), but the Rockets passed and shot better.

when we lose Dirk , this whole team just gets confused. He just makes things so easy on the rest of the offense. You guys play with heart and energy. I think you have a good team.

No that's fair enough. Dirk is the heart of the Mavs, clearly.

Landry is a go to guy for us, and he’s really hurt. He and Terry are neck and neck for 6th man of the year, but I’d say Landry is more valuable because of him playing inside.

The Rockets are probably the wrong place to look for sympathy for injuries. Anyone who tells you Yao isn’t as important to us as Dirk is to Dallas is seriously misinformed.

by Xiane on Dec 18, 2009 10:54 PM CST up reply actions

I know Yao is important but I like to stick with the players that have played this season.

I don’t think yao has played all year , so in my mind its not like losing a player during a game. I don’t ask for sympathy, injuries happen. But tonight when Landry and Dirk go out, there’s no equal trade off there. Dirk is by far a better player than Landry.

"When people talk about Super Bowl dynasties they mention the 1970's Steelers, 1980's 49ers, 1990's Cowboys and the current New England Patriots, but nobody has dominated the Super Bowl like Anheuser-Busch. In recent years, Budweiser has been the MVP of Super Bowl advertising -- making another company the favorite to win the Ad Meter poll was never an option."

Certainly Dirk is the better player, there's no one in the league like him.

But it might not be by as large a margin as you think, minute for minute.

Also, I’m saying we lost a guy who is crucial to us, but our team doesn’t revolve around any player. Seriously, check Landry out, though, and project him to like 38 minutes. Most opposing teams think he’s a scrub or something, and he’s far far from that.

terry and landry neck and neck?

Maybe I’m just a harsh critic of terry, but terry has been off sans two or three games. I’d put my mav vote for landry.

by fishbonebui on Dec 18, 2009 11:01 PM CST up reply actions

yea right now Landry over Terry,

but in terms of Dirk and Landry its a bigger margin than you think. I heard the commentator on FSW tonight say the Dirk/Landry injury was a equal tradeoff and I about died laughing and starting wondering is this the people I have to listen now? lol

Its better than Sean Elliot

Calls Barea a Cockroach and throws around pest control/RAID jokes all over the broadcast

Barea is a pest and I love it lol

Who does Sean do broadcast with? SA?

Our announcers are pretty much all Rockets,

and since we got a thorough rogering in Denver from the zebras a couple of nights ago, probably pretty agitated on that point.

But honestly, no one is as important to Dallas as Dirk. The only comparables are LeBron, Kobe, Wade, Roy, Melo, Durant. File a complaint with Bill Worrell, I guess ;)

Hey, there are a lot of Dallas people here, now! What gives?

My mom was diagnosed with a disease last year

called MS. So I decided to move closer to her and be by her as long as she is here on Earth. Then I will decide where I want to live after that and hopefully thats a long time from now. Although, I hate it here due to all the rain and humidity, I love being near her :)

I meant on the board, but God bless your mom.

It’s a very tough thing, having experienced it close at hand, and you have my sympathy.

It’s funny, the humidity says “home” to me in a way little else can. It’s hard to explain.

In a lot of ways I admire Dallas, I just don’t LIKE Dallas, and you can’t say I haven’t tried it.

Try to get into the center of Houston more, it’s sort of a different city.

Anyhow you have my best wishes.

I work near downtown and

I am reading this board alot cause well I live here. I want to see more of the area I live and the people I live with now. I mean I might as well try to like the teams alittle considering I am here now lol. I am 33 years Dallas grown so it will be hard :) I guess I can have a second favorite team , if I can get by my dislike for Houston sports :)

Hating Houston seems to be in the milk they give babies in Dallas.

I had a Dallas friend come to visit me, at like 29, he’d never been to Houston. To Thailand? Yes. All over Europe? Sure. But never to Houston. I honestly think he believed he’d get shot here within 10 minutes. I think he was surprised it wasn’t Beirut.

The Rockets are pretty easy to like – start there. FWIW, I usually root for Texas teams against all non-Texas teams. Yes, I want the Rockets to crush and humiliate Dallas and SA, but no one else should.

I guess I’ve grown fond of Portland too, after spending time there, and the fact that their SBN blog is like a force of nature.

hey now,

Not all of us Dallas people are that bad, just enjoying a game and the aftermath of one.

by fishbonebui on Dec 18, 2009 11:26 PM CST up reply actions

is that how you spell it?

huh, i always thought dallasites was the weirdest word. Either way, i enjoy a good rivalry and mavs-rockets are always fun since all my friends at school somehow all come from houston.

by fishbonebui on Dec 18, 2009 11:30 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, I think it is.

And yes, I always thought it was funny too.

As in “You know, you can get a cream that will get rid of those nasty dallasites you’ve got there.”

…and just say i’m from arlington. At least Arlingtonian(?) sounds better

thanks for the compliment (I think)

it’s also because we are used to injuries. Carl goes down. Somebody else steps up.

You also have to learn that.

we are just "a never say die attitude" team

That mentality is running in every players vein.. that’s why we can pull a game off despite of our present line up.. we’re the underdogs.. and every victory against elite teams make it much sweeter..Go Rockets!

by CONAIR on Dec 19, 2009 12:54 AM CST up reply actions

Lowry 26 pts, 10 assists, 5 steals tonight

he led the Rockets in those categories tonight

Ariza was yelling at AB for losing the ball at regulation. I’ll take his yelling over his jacking up misses. Play smart, Trevor. Don’t play to be a star. Play for the win

by RoxBeliever on Dec 18, 2009 11:39 PM CST reply actions

Are the Rockets on pace for 50 wins?

82 * 0.577 = 47.3 wins.

The schedule gets much easier in a couple weeks.

by OremLK on Dec 18, 2009 11:55 PM CST reply actions

Yes, I'd say that looks about right, maybe a few more.

If McGrady can be right, we could get more.

But I’m worried about Landry, now they are saying 5 broken teeth. Poor guy.

by Xiane on Dec 19, 2009 12:00 AM CST up reply actions

I'm amazed

that he was able to keep his composure on the court. I chipped a tooth once and I thought I was going to die. Landry loses five teeth and calmly walks over to the trainer.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 19, 2009 12:07 AM CST up reply actions

I got two teeth knocked out in a pick up game.

Totally freak thing, but yeah, I was upset.

I hope the oral surgeons can get Carl fixed almost as good as new. Dentistry is one of the best things about the modern world, in my opinion – I got titanium rods implanted with “new teeth” you can’t tell the injury ever happened.

by Xiane on Dec 19, 2009 12:36 AM CST up reply actions

I lost two teeth in a soccer game at the age of 9.......

funny how at that age all I cared about was finding my teeth so the tooth fairy could give me .25 cents for each one. I was bleeding badly but all I could think of was putting them under my pillow lol

Sweet victory ! Great revenge!

Rox theory of bouncing back from a lost of the same team works again!
Id like our poise under pressure, toughness and overall team plays.. like Andersen game..Aussie conection!

going that doesn't happen often at all

and especially with McGrady, so savor the moment :)
