Houston Rockets at Orlando Magic, Dec 23, 2009 6:00 PM CST

Olajuwon was the anomaly... the "dream," if you will. Drexler embodies the Rockets the most.

Family or not

It’s a basketball game not family reunion. When your team is coming down the court after a made free throw and at the last second you look at your point guard and have a “what’s up” look on your face, that doesn’t tell me he “knows what he’s doing”.

I’m not singling out Mac, Lad. If anyone else was joking around with Vince that much I’d be upset at them too.

wats poppin guys

I’m new to this site here. I’m a Laker first guy but the Rockets are my second favorite team. I especially love them this year since they always play hard and never quit. Not to mention my boy TA is now wearing the red. Hope ya’ll dont ban me for sayin I’m a Laker guy first (crap, maybe I shouldnt have said that)

by desecrator09 on Dec 23, 2009 7:04 PM CST reply actions

If I could ban you I would

Haha just fuckin with ya. If you got respect for houston than you’ll be good here.

by RedRowdy420 on Dec 23, 2009 7:08 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Would you like to be banned?

I haven’t done it yet, my deputy sheriff badge is all shiny and new.

Of course, you’ve not said anything that remotely warrants a ban, but I’ll do it if you ask nicely.

I hate the NBA TV schedule makers…

… because they didn’t put the Rockets on national TV at all so I had to buy the NBA League Pass.

That’s bad enough but they decided to screw me over again by putting some Rocket games only on NBA TV so even though I paid $169 to be able to see Houston play on TV, I don’t get to see all the games because I didn’t pay for NBA TV, too.

Total BS…

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.
It was making my brick wall jealous...

by steeler-hater on Dec 23, 2009 7:05 PM CST reply actions

I have to go to work now so…

… I won’t even get to watch the replay of the game tomorrow.

I love how they didn’t think this year’s Rockets were good enough to show on “free” TV but they are plenty good enough to be on NBA TV a lot.

Like I said, total BS…

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.
It was making my brick wall jealous...

by steeler-hater on Dec 23, 2009 7:07 PM CST up reply actions

I was actually pleasantly surprised to find that I had a Rockets game on my tv, tonight. First time I didn’t have to go to a bar to watch them this year.

by MadMartygan on Dec 23, 2009 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

larger issues:

can’t buy a layup
difficult time on the glass

Doesn’t help that Chuck got called for some silly fouls or that Landry could get hit in the face and not get a call, but there are bigger problems.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

I’m happy with the way the Rockets played the first half. Down by 3 isn’t bad at all.

by VBG on Dec 23, 2009 7:14 PM CST reply actions

Especially with Landry in foul trouble

by VBG on Dec 23, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

surprised TA hasnt had a career first half

tryin to show up the team that traded him cuz they thought he was garbage. (Well, I’m sure he liked how that trade ended up though)

Ariza.....

Just what is going on?

Minnesotan Rockets fan

by Barragan on Dec 23, 2009 7:36 PM CST reply actions

Aaaaaand we're right back where we started the second quarter... down 12.

If Ariza is going to suck two to three games for every one game he actually shows signs of being worth what the Rockets paid for him, then the proud tradition of the Rockets getting shafted on free agent signings will continue unabated.

by DribbleHooper on Dec 23, 2009 7:42 PM CST reply actions

for every one game he actually shows signs of being worth what the Rockets paid for him

Well, sure, if you’re just going to discount everything that’s not scoring.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 7:47 PM CST up reply actions

Just one of those nights

good shots not falling, bad opponents shots are falling, shit happens.

It’s a good thing I’m a baseball fan. It gives one perspective on the length of a season, as well as the variability in any one game.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 7:54 PM CST reply actions

Perspective is good.

So is Orlando. Good team, on a good night for them, and yet another frickin’ back-to-back. Dribblehooper has told me the schedule will get easier, I certainly hope so.

by Xiane on Dec 23, 2009 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

I'm guessing the work firewall -- or something similar -- is messing with my reply button.

It just seems to me that Ariza has a lot of one-fer nights, while taking something like the second- or third-highest number of shots. That kind of gaping void in offense is very difficult to overcome even with the best defense.

by DribbleHooper on Dec 23, 2009 7:56 PM CST reply actions

I'd say his shot selection is a work in progress.

The SBN boards can get twitchy sometimes, maybe its your firewall, maybe not.

by Xiane on Dec 23, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

and yet

here we are. And by all the metrics I’ve seen, he comes out ahead. Yes, even in Berri’s WP48, which penalizes volume shooters quite heavily.

Do you really think that the Rockets would be playing someone 40 minutes each night if he was a net negative on the team? If you don’t (and you shouldn’t, btw), do you really think you have a better grasp on Ariza’s contributions than Adelman and Morey?

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

It doesn’t mean he can’t play better.

by VBG on Dec 23, 2009 8:00 PM CST up reply actions

no, it certainly doesn't

but that isn’t what DribbleHooper was saying. Ariza – right now – is worth every penny the Rockets pay for him. Anyone saying he isn’t simply isn’t valuing defense properly.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

his defense

has started to tail off. i don’t know if we’re asking too much of him on the offensive end or just playing him too much but he’s looking like he’s regressed since the start of the year

by bk219 on Dec 23, 2009 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

also

looking at our offensive and defensive efficiencies with ariza on/off the court, we’re actually 2.8 points better per 100 possessions without ariza playing. i know it’s not a perfect metric, just something worth noting

by bk219 on Dec 23, 2009 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

i might be mistaken

but i’m looking at the on court/off court stats at 82 games. it says our offensive efficiency is 107.5 with him and 111.0 without him while our defensive efficiency is 106.6 with him and 107.2 without him.

by bk219 on Dec 23, 2009 8:15 PM CST up reply actions

okay, yes

but those stats haven’t been adjusted yet, either.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 8:18 PM CST up reply actions

Him being great on defense doesn’t excuse him from missing so many shots on offense.

He’s still been a great pickup

by VBG on Dec 23, 2009 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

I mean adjusted for strength of opposition

they should be using last year’s adjustments, but the new adjustments won’t be available for some time.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

Repeated apologies for the non-reply replies. Not sure what's going on.

I’ll go so far as to agree that Adelman and Morey must be seeing something I’m not. In all fairness, all I get to see is the box score/live update, being (a) out of state and (b) at work. Therefore, I can’t really see his defense in action, so I’ll own that I am speaking out of ignorance with regard to his defensive contributions.

Still, that bad shot selection really hurts a team that, in all honesty, can’t really afford to have such poor offensive outings from one of its starters… particularly when two more starters are also notoriously low-output offensively (Hayes and Battier).

I suppose the thing that would make me feel a little better about nights like these, is knowing how Ariza’s contract compares to Battier’s. If they’re comparable — and I want to say I’ve read elsewhere (probably from you?) that they are — then I guess I can’t really complain.

Not that this will stop me… ;)

by DribbleHooper on Dec 23, 2009 8:06 PM CST reply actions

Ariza

is paid about $1 million less than Battier. It increases over the years, but it should be very similar. He gets the MLE – so he’s necessarily paid as an average player.

by Only_A_Lad on Dec 23, 2009 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

David Andersen. Where two fouls in two seconds happen.

by VBG on Dec 23, 2009 8:06 PM CST reply actions

He commits fouls, mind you, but the silly ticky tack crap should stop.

It'll be really nice when Andersen starts developing some consistency.

Of course, it’d help if the whistles on him also develop some consistency, as Xiane pointed out.

Kinda annoying listening to the commentary. This is from earlier-

“Rockets look like they just don’t care. We all now they have had a brutal schedule because of all thier whining and crying, but whining and crying doesn’t get you anything in the NBA”

Dwight Howard shot attempts: Seven.
