Around SBN: SB Nation interviews Jerome Bettis

"Tracy McGrady is out for the season."

More coverage to come as we find out more. This is some crazy stuff, and we now know that McGrady was indeed hurting badly. I'll assume this is a true report for now, but you never know.

I don't understand the incentive to trade Artest now

we played great against the Nets. Sure, they suck, but we played well, especially on defense. I’m of the opinion that losing McGrady for the year ends any chance of us winning the championship. Isn’t the next priority then thinking about the future? The Carter trade is not a good move for the future. At least Ron’s contract ends this year, regardless of how troublesome he supposedly has been in the locker room (I got that from some ppl on ClutchFans).

Hopefully Landry’s ankle issue isn’t a big one.

Well

If we make the deal, our lineup looks like:

PG: Rafer/Brooks
SG: VC/Wafer
SF: Battier/Barry
PF: Scola/Hayes/Boone
C: Yao/Deke

Is this lineup any worse at all than those of year’s past, when we could have moved on through the playoffs but instead either didn’t have Yao or failed to show up in Dallas. I’m not saying I’m betting my life savings on us making the ‘Ship, but I think we actually have a better shot if we make this deal. We need an athletic scorer on the wing, and Artest is not that. Carter is, and he is what a healthy McGrady was last season. I think we will be better off if we make the deal, but if I’ve overlooked something, let it be known. The cap space is an interesting factor, but I’ll leave it alone for now — not saying I can just forget about it, but for the sake of my argument about our roster benefitting, I’ll get to it later.

By going down

Do you mean happening or not happening?

I think it's going to happen.

But I am no expert, my friend.

And, of course,

the reaction on ClutchFans is disgusting.

Time to emerge, Von Wafer.

Damn. Now I feel kinda guilty for being so frustrated with Tracy, even doubting the seriousness of his injuries at times. Poor guy.

by Jeffrey on Feb 18, 2009 6:12 AM CST reply actions

yea

wanted him to just shut it down for a month or so to get healty…didnt realize this will shut him down all year…also heard possibly next year too…

I have to ask

Anyone know the specific contract cut rules for the NBA? If the Rockets cut him/buy him out, does this hurt the salary cap next year? I’m guessing it might, but don’t know. Here’s the reason I ask.
1. If he has microfracture surgery he’s gone for next year too, almost guaranteed.
2. There is no coming back from the way he has acted this season, injury or not. There is about a 4% chance that Morey would have thought about resigning him after 2010.

So, given that, what are the options? I’m going to research but am away on business the rest of the week so may not have time.

by UofTOrange on Feb 18, 2009 8:47 AM CST reply actions

Wasn't that what Portland did with Darius Miles?

He had a “season-ending” injury and wrote his salary off the books, but now that he’s back they’ll have to pay for it…

by Carlos_HoustonSportsFanatic on Feb 19, 2009 12:43 AM CST up reply actions

and that's it...

I feel really bad for McGrady… I just hope he realizes that after this surgery he’s going to have to completely re-define his game. And he’s probably out all of NEXT year, too. Which means we completely missed our window of opportunity to trade him.

Dark day. Unless your name is “Von Wafer”.

by grungedave on Feb 18, 2009 8:52 AM CST reply actions

Have the Rockets officially said he's out for the year?

So far Morey just said we’re STILL looking for opinions, and they’re not ready to say he needs this surgery. I’m not sure if this Stephen A. Smith story will be the end of this.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 18, 2009 11:13 AM CST reply actions

Well ya

Because they are trying to trade him

by UofTOrange on Feb 18, 2009 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

No we're not

Feigen said today we have never been trying to trade McGrady, and this was before this recent announcement of him being done for the year.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 18, 2009 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

Feigen?

Feigen said that? Well, why didn’t you say so in the first place?!?

I mean, it’s not like Morey and Alexander might not want to tip off a freakin’ reporter to their trade plans…………..

/okay, sorry for over the top sarcasm, but you gotta remember that the same guys that give coaches votes of confidence then fire them a week later also say that “Player X” is untouchable at the same time they are trying to trade him.

Feigen's quote on T-Mac

http://blogs.chron.com/nba/2009/02/mcgrady_out_for_the_year_if_he.html

Some laughed. Others steamed. One guy sort of barked at me.

“There is no trade for Vince Carter. None. Forget it.”

There were two ways to determine whether the Rockets would trade for Vince Carter. There were those within the Rockets’ decision-making that could reveal the Rockets’ true interest in Vince Carter. They said there was none. Or anyone could check to see if Daryl Morey was still the general manager.

He is. The Rockets still search for value, players that outperform the space they occupy in the Rockets’ allowance. The Rockets are not trading for Vince Carter, though he did offer a pretty impressive audition.

The problem is that I cannot reveal what they do hope to accomplish because I could not pry loose the name.

There is a long-shot deal they hope to make, too much of a longshot apparently for me to shake free the name. Basically, the Rockets want either a difference maker or the sort of deal that could help them get that sort of player later (like the way trading for Bobby Jackson enabled them to get Ron Artest.)

The McGrady developments late Tuesday will not impact this. They were not dealing him. No one is taking on that contract now, even before he said he would need microfracture surgery.

The Rockets could settle for a small move, maybe pick up a first-round pick from a team that does not want to have to spend the money on a late first-rounder. They could move Luther Head. He would seem to need minutes he does not seem likely to get here and there are teams with backcourt injuries. He is expected to be ready to play by next week. And they might just pull off something more significant.

What gives?

by goingforthecorner on Feb 18, 2009 4:26 PM CST reply actions

I don't know that he was saying that they weren't trying

I think he was saying, it wasn’t going to happen even if they wanted it to happen

by UofTOrange on Feb 18, 2009 5:33 PM CST up reply actions

Nobody wants the contract this year

but next year many teams will. We will get some very nice offers.
