Announcement: Utah Jazz beat-down #3 tonight!
As much fun as it was to see Luis Landry have their way with the Toronto Raptors last night... it's time to put that in the back of our minds and focus on the more immediate goal:
getting the season hat trick against the evil Utah Jazz.
Some moronic NBA "experts" have already given the Jazz a top 3 seed in the West, even though Utah has sucked more than Jenna Jameson for a good portion of the 2008/09 season. Many have already written the Rockets off, especially tonight because the Jazz are somehow unbeatable at home... yeah, right, whatever.
Anyway, tonight it's Rockets @ Jazz.
I eagerly await the reactions from Utah fans after our 2nd unit runs up the score on them when Boozer and D-WIll are out. Then again, maybe the Utah fans are too busy rallying the cause for this kid and are distracted by people saying naughty words.
Go Rockets... a win tonight would make me almost as happy as I was when I got news that we traded that Rafer guy.

lol…4chan hacked his webpage a while back. Hilarity ensued. Of course, then a bunch of them had to go and send the kid death threats…
Still, what a bullshit cause.

THIS JUST IN: the Rockets get no respect. In fact, the whole team seems like it’s a collection of players the media has largely written off for significant portions of their careers. It’s like the Rockets are the scrappy team on a cliched sports movie.
Actually, that makes a lot of sense. Every time they show images of Adelman on the court, he has that “Why the fuck did I take this job?” look on his face, so he reminds me a lot of the coach in the Mighty Ducks.
I'll settle with a close game
Whatever the spread is, Utah will cover it for sure. I just hope Yao and Brooks don’t get embarrassed on the defensive end. I predict Scola will be called for 3 inexplicable offensive fouls. Is this Artest’s first game in Utah since the infamous “NO LAYUPS!” game? He needs to slap Harpring around.

9 point spread
vegas gives houston no love either. or maybe they know what theyre doing…
so would I
but remember that Vegas odds have less to do with an accurate prediction of what will happen and more of an accurate prediction of what people think will happen. Over/under odds are set so that an essentially equal number of people take either bet.
The Rockets can't cover
…if they’re the dog. Only the favorite can cover the spread. If the Rockets lose win or lose by less than nine points, they’ve beaten the spread.

what?
That kinda ruins the whole concept of “don’t win, just cover”.
not to get into a semantical argument, but I think you are wrong here.
Underdogs can cover the spread I think
But you know what we mean anyway even if it’s the wrong official term to use.

That's not true
While it’s not a true gambling term, it is completely understood as covering the spread

In every day talk you might say that an underdog covered if they won
However, to a bookmaker covering refers very specifically to the favorite winning by more points than the spread. If you went to the book at Caeser’s and asked the agent to put $22 on the Rockets to cover against the Jazz (in last night’s example) he’d give you a very puzzled look.
From Wikipedia:
In sports such as basketball or American football, betting on the point spread is more popular, although money line odds are usually offered as well. A point spread wager typically requires a bettor to risk $110 to win $100, the extra $10 being the bookmaker’s vigorish if the wager loses. However, bettors backing the favorite collect only if their team wins by more than a specific victory margin, which is set at the time of the wager. This is called “covering the spread”. Similarly, underdog bettors can collect even when their team loses, as long as they win against the point spread by losing by fewer points than were quoted by the bookmaker. For example, suppose that a college football game between Team A and Team B had Team A as a 27 point favorite (quoted as Team A -27, or Team B +27):
If Team A defeats Team B by more than 27 points, they have covered the spread and bettors on Team A would receive $100 on a $110 bet. Team B bettors lose the $110 they wagered.
If Team B defeats Team A, bettors on Team B would receive $100 on a $110 bet. Team A bettors lose the $110 they wagered.
If Team B loses by less than 27 points, they have won against the spread. Bettors on both sides are then treated exactly as if Team B had won the game.
If Team A wins by exactly 27 points, the wager is called a “push”, and neither side wins. Standard practice by U.S. bookmakers is to return the stakes of all bettors on the game in full. To prevent pushes and ensure that they receive their commission on losing wagers, bookmakers often set point spreads that include a half-point.
In any event, fuck the Jazz.

Like i said
It’s not a true gambling term, but that doesn’t change it from being commonly accepted

So in reflection
It IS “true” but it’s still commonly accetped

Fuck
9 points is too much to touch. Looks like Vegas figured out our dirty secret that is our home/road splits.

Actually
Houston v Utah creates an actual black hole of media attention. Despite decades of generally good, (and also Championship (in Houston’s case anyhow)) performance, both teams generate negative media attention. Put the two together and gravity goes haywire, or something.
I fully expect to see an ESPN anchor one day do this “Tonight Hommrrphrl played Ummmprrrr and La! La! La! I’m ignoring it! Let’s see what Kobe did on his day off instead.”
At the risk of talking to myself-
Coach Sleepy! Attention Please!
This is why we drafted the big dude in the suit, spacing out while looking at the Power Dancers. Dorsey, I think he’s called.
RELEASE THE GODDAMN KRAKEN ON UTAH! It’s what he’s FOR fer Chrissakes! Who care’s if he’s thrown out, if he caves in Boozer’s skull whiles he’s out there?
I think the NBA
would be much improved if they adopted a more generous concept of what constitutes a foul but also adopted NHL-style enforcers. Opponents would be allowed to hack at Yao’s shot , but Joey Dorsey would come in and beat the crap out of them.
another hockey reference
youre on fire today!
Kirilenko is a bitch
That’s really all I wanted to add.

Serious?
The Jazz are in a No. 7 seed in the West, and just BARELY got their full lineup back. I don’t understand how they would classify them as a sucky team. It says a lot about their bench though. Don’t get me wrong….Houston’s had their fare share of injuries, but not to the extent as the Jazz. You say you can’t wait for Houston’s 2nd team to come in and dominate. Seriously? The Jazz have the best bench in the NBA. Kirilenko, Millsap, Korver, Harrping, Knight. That’s an unbelievable bench to back up D-Will, Boozer, Brewer, and Memo. Especially with their motivation after the death of their owner. The Jazz have always been a good home team. Is it impossible to beat them there? Absolutely not. The Rockets beat them in the playoffs in Utah last year. The Jazz play the rockets better on the road then the Rockets play the Jazz on the road though. Just look at game 7 in 2007 and games 1 and 2 last year. Rocket fans hate the Jazz because they’re the reason the T-Mac and the Rockets can’t get out of the 1st round.
it's not 2007 anymore
Hey, T-Mac isn’t here anymore… even mentioning him is a waste of time on your part. We let him go a long, long time ago.
and this is hilarious: “Especially with their motivation after the death of their owner.” No professional athlete is motivated by his owner… unless that owner threatens not to pay him. Sorry, but as much as Larry Miller loved his team, it was no where near reciprocated on the same level.
Appetizers
Just as the previous two years, when the games really matter Jazz play a couple of levels above the Rockets. Seriously, I have no hate for the Rockets what-so-ever; they’ve been the appetizers for our team, in preparation for the meal (actual playoffs).
Until you win a postseason series against us, I suggest not saying much.
Energy Solutions Arena (to Jazz fans it’ll always be the “Delta Center”) is the place where Kobe’s Lakers got beat, KG’s Celtics got shipped off to Boston, and you think you have a chance to come in tonight and pull off a “W”? hahaha.
odd
I remember winning two VERY important playoff series against Utah…
May 1994 and May 1995. Utah blew Game 5 at home in 1995. That was epic. And beautiful.
