Is Greg Oden contracting a serious case of "Yao-itis"?
From Joe Freeman at OregonLive.com:
Rookie center Greg Oden did not practice Friday and coach Nate McMillan said he is a game-time decision for tomorrow night's playoff opener against the Houston Rockets. Oden awoke Friday morning with a sinus infection and the Blazers sent him to get further evaluated by team doctors. The Blazers were still awaiting results of that examination as I was writing this.
Yeah, Yao is going to completely own the Trail Blazers over the next 6 games (and yes, I said "6" and not "7" because the Rockets will finish off the Blazers at home in Game 6).
Greg Oden looking up at Yao while wearing a suit... he's no dummy.

…was a euphamism for late season choking. If that’s the case, Greg, please do keep your distance from him.

Not entirely talking about his individual performance (but his body choked twice the past three years.) And he’s a 7’6" six time all-star who hasn’t been able to get his team past the first round. (He’s a great player, but hasn’t proven yet he can carry a team far. )
With that guy on the team I’d say anytime you don’t get to the second round you’ve choked. There really is no excuse— nobody can really match up with him.

maybe youre right
if basketball was a one person sport…you cant say that a team should advance because of a single player unless its Lebron or kobe or wade or MJ. All of whom are guard oriented players. Yes yao is a 6 time all star, but if he wasnt chinese he wouldnt be. His first two years were not all star seasons.

Rockets in 4 or 5
I know it’s been the Rockets’ bugaboo all season long, but I really think the Blazers are going to have trouble scoring down the stretch of these ballgames. The Rockets D has been turning up the intensity quite nicely late in the season and I don’t think the Blazers will be ready to respond. Without the extra six fouls that Oden provides (and we all know that Pryzbilla will commit a foul a minute), the Blazers will be forced to go small, and LaMarcus doesn’t have the energy or quickness to effectively front Yao. Rockets pick up the first game and the series is over.
by forshizzzle on Apr 17, 2009 5:14 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
What?
LaMarcus doesn’t have the energy and QUICKNESS to front Yao? Do you know who LaMarcus Aldridge is? He’s a little more knimble than Yao is, that’s for sure. Did you know he’s the fastest player on the Blazers team?
I think the Rockets will be the ones having problems scoring down the stretch. They don’t have anybody to go to in a big situation and notoriously have a problem getting Yao enough shots, and getting him the ball when really needed. If you guys are depending on Ron “crazy pills” Artest to take your big shots, Portland is going to dispose of you quickly. I love how you guys think Houston is going to win this series so easily
by Cvd2312 on Apr 17, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Go back and watch the last matchup of the regular season
I was at UT while Aldridge was there and have a great deal of respect for him. He just doesn’t play with the energy on the defensive end that is needed to effectively front Yao. You have to be completely willing to grab and constantly move on the defensive end and he didn’t show the willingness to do that in the last matchup between these two teams.
Defensively, the Rockets will give serious problems to the Blazers. I’m definitely confident about this series and especially given all the national attention that the Blazers are getting.

going to be a short series. The rockets have owned my Blazers but the post season is the post season. I dont think the Rockets get a win in Portland the way thr Blazers have been dismanteling top tier contenders the last month at home.

Youre totally right the post season is the post season
And do you know what wins in the postseason? Cause i do Its experience excecution and defense. Hmm lets examine this further:
Experience: everyone knows about the recent struggles for the rockets, but nobody knows about the struggles for the blazers, oh wait, thats cause they have 0 playoff experience. I think artest and barry are going to be difference makers for the rockets in the playoffs, who by the way were not on the previous 1st round exiting rockets teams. Edge: Rockets
Excecution: I think that excecution is part experience, part opposition’s defense, and part coaching. The rockets have the experience, better defense, and a more experienced playoff coach. The blazers on the other hand are one of the best offensive teams while the rockets have struggled with offensive excecution. Edge: Even
Defense: not gonna talk about this, its obvious. Edge Rockets
That being said i think its gonna be a great series but i give it to the rockets in 6.

I love how your counter arguments
are all the same. If you read what i wrote and if you followed the rockets (which im not blaming you for not doing) you would know that this rockets team is not the rockets team of the past two years. Lets see who the rockets have added this year…Artest brings more experience and toughness…Barry brings more experience and can hit the clutch three…lowry brings toughness from the pg spot…wafer brings athleticism that the rockets havent had. And about the jazz in the previous two years the experience was about equal compared to the rockets, the blazers dont really compare

I realize that the team has changed
but until they actually do win, they won’t get credit.
The argument that the Blazers have no experience is more myth than reality. Pelton and Hollinger have done analysis that shows young teams in their first postseasons actually do very well.

Beware Blazers bearing viruses.
“Nicolas Batum, who did not play Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder because of flu-like symptoms, is expected to return to the starting lineup against the Nuggets.
Batum was sent home roughly 15 minutes before tipoff against the Thunder and did not practice with the team yesterday, but said prior to the game that he was feeling “OK” tonight.
He was cramming for his challenging defensive matchup against All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony up until about 45 minutes before tipoff as Batum and coach Nate McMillan engaged in a rare and lengthily conversation in McMillan’s office until he opened his door for a pregame meeting with reporters…."
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2009/04/nuggets_pregame_batum_to_start.html
“After Wednesday’s game, Batum would have just settled for a night in bed.
After missing Monday’s game, Tuesday’s practice and Wednesday’s shootaround because of the flu, nobody expected Batum to play against the Nuggets. At the height of his sickness, Batum said he carried a 103-degree temperature and was unable to keep food down.
I was speaking with Williams two hours before the game underneath the Blazers basket when Batum came out with that look of his – part deer in the headlights, part cool as a cucumber.
“How you feel? You gonna play?’’ Williams asked, a little stunned.
Nonchalantly, Batum shrugged his shoulders and said he felt fine.
The two worked out briefly and Batum disappeared back into the locker room. About 15 minutes later, he re-emerged with team doctor Tom Reis, who wanted to know from Williams exactly what Batum was able to do.
“I didn’t do much with him,’’ Williams said.
Reis had Batum run from the baseline to halfcourt and back a couple times, then escorted him to the locker room. As they walked back under the tunnel, Reis checked Batum’s pulse by gripping his right wrist. Judging from the caution Reis was taking and the two limited on court workouts, I doubted Batum would play.
But about 10 minutes later, inside the locker room, as Batum sat at his locker with a Gatorade and energy bar, McMillan came in and tapped Batum on the shoulder. He wanted to see the rookie in his office.
The meeting lasted a good 15 minutes and extended into the time usually allotted for McMillan’s media access. As such, 10 reporters were waiting outside McMillan’s office door while McMillan gave Batum a run through on the defensive strategy in guarding Carmelo Anthony. Through the long, narrow window on McMillan’s door, I could see the coach diagramming defensive schemes in green felt pen on the large greaseboard. Batum had risen from his seat and stood at attention.
Shyly, Batum exited the office, revealing no shoes, just socks. He was going to play….Batum said he received five bags of intravenous fluids in his forearms about 15 minutes before the game…."

Yao Dominates?
By whose defenition? Yao failed to average 20 and 10 yet again, a feat he has accomplished only in two injury shortened seasons in his seven year career. Zach Randolph has better stats than that. I predict Yao gets at least two shots blocked back in his face in game one Saturday.
Seriously, I hope Yao dominates. He has the physical gifts to be the MDE but seems reluctant to be the go to guy for his team.
by jtkerr79 on Apr 17, 2009 8:03 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yao does dominate
when he gets the ball. The rockets have always had the tendency to get away from yao during games, fronting or not. Its not yao being reluctant to be the go to guy, he has hit plenty of clutch shots in his career. For a big man to dominate he has to be able to get the ball and that takes help from his teamates. Other big men like shaq and dwight and hakeem dominated partially because of their ability to grab offensive boards. Most people think yaos size is an extreme advantage for him, which it is, but it also hurts him because he is slow and had bad reactions. Due to these factors yao cant “go” get rebounds but when they come to him he grabs them.

The Rockets are a great team...
…. but I quote John Hollinger from ESPN right here:
20, 20, 21, 35, 3, 12, 8, 15, 30 and 28. Those were the Blazers’ margins of victory while taking 10 of their final 11 games. They weren’t just beating teams, folks, they were beating the holy hell out of them. And their road woes ceased late in the year; the Blazers won seven of their final nine road games, and one of the losses was at Cleveland in overtime.
May the beatings of holy hell commence. (and, yes, I am aware of who the other road loss was to – touche!). By the way, that OT loss to Cleveland was w/o LaMarcus.

The context of those wins is important too
Im not denying that those are impressive wins, but you need to look at the context of it too.
1st game was vs Phoenix, back to back for phoenix after hosting the jizz
2nd game was vs memphis, back to back for Mem after playing at sac
3rd game was vs Jizz, back to back for Jizz after hosting the knicks
4th game was @OKC, no back to back for either team
5th game was @ Houston, the one yall lost, no back to back for either team
6th was @ Mem, no back to back for either team
7th was @ SA, back to back for both teams
8th was vs. LAL, back to back for LAL after hosting den
9th was @ LAC, back to back for both
10th was vs. OKC, no back to back for either team
11th was vs Den, who didnt care
So to recap, yall played 4 teams who were on the second of a back to back while yall werent. Yall played 0 back to back when it wasnt a back to back for the other team. Thats a pretty favorable schedule.
The margins of when yall played a team on thier second of a back to back were 20, 20, 21, and 8. Those other two big wins, the ones of 35 and 30 were both against the lowly thunder. So on games where the teams were on the same playing field, i.e. no back to backs, your margins were 3, 12, 15. The only impressive one of those was the SA game. I dont count the denver game cause they didnt care and george karl even said that during the game

So Houston didn't enjoy any wins on b2b's ...
… on their way to ALMOST winning home court? I have a few stats that lead to some context:
Houston vs LA Lakers: 0-4
Houston vs SAS: 2-2
Houston vs Phx: 1-2
Houston vs Utah: 2-2
Houston vs Mem: 2-2
These are the good teams on that streak that Portland annihilated (I included “the lowly” Memphis team, because, well, 2-2 against them speaks for itself). Portland had:
PDX vs LA Lakers: 2-2
PDX vs SAS: 3-1
PDX vs PHX: 2-2
PDX vs Utah: 2-2
PDX vs Mem: 4-0
Its not like Portland blew those teams away just because of “context”. They earned 13 wins against those same teams and had .500 or better records over the course of the entire season against each of them. Houston had seven wins and .500 or worse records against each of them.
By the way, Houston’s entire season point differential against the Oklahoma Thunder in three games was 25 points, not even as high as a single game’s differential between Oklahoma and Portland on that run. How’s that for context?
Good luck tonight. I hope you guys can keep it kind of close.
