Yeah i agree that the officiating was bad

but the fact is that the rockets didnt excecute on offense in the end. the blazers played better in the end and they deserved to win just on that.

The officiating is embarrassing for the league. Yes i know nba games are difficult to officiate, but tonight was horrible. Ed Malloy made one call on battier when malloy wasnt even looking at the play. Flops only make officiating harder and there will be one time where a flop will determine a game and it will make the nba look horrible

The bottom line though is that if the rockets made their free throws and got the ball to yao more, the rockets win

Wow, this sounds like the Blazers in game 1?

(While not admitting that the reffing was biased for this game, I’ll agree it was strange.)

lots of odd calls tonight

both ways. First they let them play, then they call everything, then they let them play, then they call everything. Very inconsistent effort from the refs

How did you guys win that?

spare me

Yes, NBA referees suck, but it happens both ways. How much contact does Roy have to draw on Yao for them to call a foul on Yao? Because Yao could pull out a bat and clobber Brandon in the knees and they won’t pull out a whistle. Meanwhile, Wafer and Artest put their heads down out of control and plow into Oden or Przybilla, and its a call every time.

But for as bad as it can be, it rarely makes the difference in a game. Them almost always suck both ways. I know its a news flash, but they don’t have it in for any specific team.

I coach high school basketball here in Oregon, and I tell my players one thing: if the referees are in a position to have an impact on the game, you havent’ done your job.

No playoff series is ever decided by referees. This will be no exception. Portland lost game one because they weren’t ready to play and Houston drilled them for it. Houston lost game two because they didn’t get the ball to the big man and missed their free throws.

Whoever wins this series, it won’t be because of the referees. And any fan, whether Portland or Houston fan who belives otherwise, is only fooling themselves.

(PS, Try being a Pac-10 fan. Those referees are so incompetent, they make NBA refs look phenomenal).

Except for the series where refs did have an effect. Have you heard of this Donaghy (sp?) guy…?

So your saying these refs are actually competent

and rigging the game, instead of being incompetent and blowing calls because they suck.

by KitIsh on Apr 22, 2009 2:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt

this is just one instance (back to back possessions by Blazers then Rockets) but even the replays show Yao leaving his feet with Roy drawing contact. Roy makes bucket-no call.

Next possession by Rockets: Wafer drives out of control (yeah, frickin’ Von Wafer). Oden stands flat footed, arms outstretched, lightly grazes Wafer. Wafer misses-foul called and free throws.

Quite whining about the refs Rocket fans! They didn’t cost you the game. Yao’s ineffectiveness cost you the game along with Brandon Roy absolutely breaking Artest and Battier’s ankles…better ice ’em up boys!

HAHA

Its funny that blazer fans are telling rockets fans not to complain about the refs when yall did after the 27 point loss. Like c’mon guys, if youre real bball fans you should know that refs dont affect a 27 point game. In a 4 pt game they can, but they didnt. the rockets blew the game themselves, but stop getting on rockets fans’ asses for complaining, cause thats just being hypocritical.

Blazers fans-- plenty of us complained after the 30 point blowout in game 1, so don't begrudge Houston fans for being fustrated

I completely understand, even though I disagree that the refs were what cost the Rockets the game.

Refs

As much as I want to blame it on Joey Crawford… in the last 2 minutes Brooks had 2 out of control turnovers and Ron Artest’s shot selection was suspect at best. It’s a nice scapegoat but come on Brandon Roy deserved this game. Show some respect to a great player who was clutch at the end. Good luck in Houston though, yall will need it

by clutchcitywillreturn on Apr 22, 2009 1:01 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for staying classy jk

i dont think it was the refs either, but complaining about it in a 30 pt blowout and a 4 pt game are different things. the refs can actually affect a game when its a close one like tonight, but they cant in a thirty point blowout.

sorry blazer fans

agree to a certain degree

Most Blazer fans feel that the Rockets were able to set a tone early by clobbering Roy in the middle and getting away with it. This threw off our game because we do count on his offense…heavily. I think that tone set in the first quarter decided the game. Although in general I agree with those that say that the refs shouldn’t be able to effect the outcome if you play right. That said, the refs were bad both ways tonight, but I do agree that it was generally slanted towards the Blazers, I just figured home court advantage calls, but I was in the crowd and it was hard to see some of the calls. I saw a couple calls that clearly were Blazer advantages, I also saw our bigs getting some bad calls that didn’t go the other way. Overall average NBA game of bad officiating…FIRE STERN.

by The Natural ala Mode on Apr 22, 2009 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

many would disagree

about Roy being “clobbered” in the middle. it was regular playoff toughness, and roy came to play in a tux. i don’t remember hearing any commentators point out any unfairness in Roy’s calls. This may anger blazer fans, but the officiating wouldn’t have been as big a deal if Roy focused more on trying to score than trying to draw fouls.
blazer fans who still think the refs induced the 30 pt blowout are just asking for rockets fans to respond with stuff like “well then our 5 point loss is obviously likely the officials fault”. most sensible rockets fans will swallow our pride and admit we didn’t deserve to win game 2 with the way we executed, regardless of the officiating.

In the first quarter the Blazers were in the penalty with 8 min left

In the second quarter the Blazers were in the penalty with 7 min left. Blame the refs if you want. You think Yao gets jobbed? Oden had 6 fouls in 11 min. Rockets only had two fouls more than the Blazers.

thats what happens to young big men

they dont know how to play the game just yet. it happend to yao when he was younger and its just part of the learning process.

and number of fouls is not a good indicator of fairness of fouls; flopping, blown calls, etc.

Thank you.

I counted at least one, maybe two fouls called on Oden that should have gone to someone else helping and one on Yao bringing his arm down defending BRoy. Oden gets that call against him all the time.

Complaints about the suspect officiating are definitely a moot point in a 27 point loss. But you guys also have no gripe about last night’s game.

Joel Pryzbilla

He is turning into our little Bruce Bowen. While the OP wants to kick him in the yarbles, I want to give him a big hug. If you want know why Joel has to do a bit of acting, it is due to the lack of respect he was getting in the last few years by standing his ground and getting his arms up. For better or worse, the Blazers are learning to play the game within the game by trying to make things “easier” for the officials. I dont really like it that much and was pumped that Brandon would take his lumps after a no call, but now he does quite a churlish yelp after every drive that has moved me more into the Aldridge camp for favorite Blazer.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

The officiating was awful

it is my pet peeve….the league needs to do something…a fourth official?…something?

i’ve not been to a game where I’m not yelling at the refs —BOTH ways…I’m a fan of the GAME not one team particularly….this year it was Portland cause my buddy is on the squad -- next year, who knows? One thing for certain I HATE IT WHEN THE REFS EFFECT A GAME ADVERSELY……and it seems a universal thing

Get real

Complaining about Yao is ridiculous…they ran video comparisons of Yao and Oden doing the same thing – Foul on Oden, not on Yao. The way Yao was allowed to do what he pleased late in the game because there was NO risk of fouls being called against him just exposes the worst of the NBA – No calls based on reputation not what actually happens. Oden earned about half of his 6 fouls while Yao earned every one minus the Pryz flop plus about 5 no calls that I observed. I admit the officiating was incompetent and annoying but the balance was more in Houston’s favour than in Portland’s.

by MadBlaze on Apr 22, 2009 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The more you complain about the refs...

The more you look like a myopic homer who can’t accept his team’s defeat. This wasn’t game six of the 2002 WCF… Ralph Nader is not going to write a letter for you. Poor officiating washes out over the course of a game, and we have here an entire seven game series.

Bad calls went both ways last night… And, until you can remove your head from your rectum enough to acknowledge a couple bad calls that went in Houston’s favour, please STFU. Thank you.

your not serious? The blazers got more bad calls in game 2 than the rockets did.. it just happens that the bad calls against the rockets were more blatent in the 4th quarter. The rockets are getting away with murder out there, so you can expect the blazers to try and copy it. Its going to annoy you, but hey, what you sow you reap

I really think the refs were bad on both sides

I’m sorry but i really don’t see it, the calls were bad on both sides. I do agree that refs can kill momentum or rhythm for a team with bad calls but didn’t feel that was the case with game 2. At one point, i believe in the 3rd quarter i looked at the foul situation and the rockets had considerably more fouls shots than the Blazers. The rockets guards are very quick and aggressive and they deserve to get calls. However, BRoy would get body checked by Yao on several drives and BRoy did not get the call. If that was Kobe, he’d have a foul every time. As a previous poster mentioned, Oden and Joel foul out, Lamarcus almost fouls out even though he rarely gets into foul trouble. They were certainly the victim of some bad calls. Battier didn’t deserve 1 or 2 of his fouls. Then again, he was guarding BRoy who was attacking and aggressively driving the ball at times so its not surprising that Battier will pick up more fouls, he cannot stop BRoy when BRoy is slicing through the defense.

Now if the blazers had 40 FT’s compared to rockets 16 FT’s and Yao and Artest are in serious foul trouble then I believe you have a case. Or if the blazers were awarded 25 FT’s compared to rockets 10 FT’s in the 4th quarter then something is fishy.

Overall, the more aggressive team will get the calls, that goes for every game, every team.

The only REAL beef...

I had with officiated was very late in the game when Roy (I think it was him) came flying in over Yao’s shoulder and somehow that wasn’t a loose ball foul? Someone please explain it to me (honestly I would like to know if there is something I missed) if there was a reason the ball went to the Portland?

LOL...I only needed to read the first sentence to know the rest of it wasn't worth reading.

The refs (along with the Blazers inept offense) won you guys game 1 (see what I did there?). Quit whining about the refs…that is the most played out excuse this season. You know have two games in Houston…where it is ridiculously tough to win at. Believe it or not, you would have done a worse job because you probably don’t even know half the rules AND you can actually see the whole game from a vantage point.

Think of it from the referees prospective and brush it off. You still have to win three more to move on.
