Game 3: Portland @ Houston, 8:30pm CST

Portland Trail Blazers at Houston Rockets, Apr 24, 2009 8:30 PM CDT

Here's your Game Thread for Game 3.

All complaints about officiating, "flopping" v. "charging", why Adelman keeps yanking Von Wafer out of the game, and why Yao Ming is a badass... that all belongs here.  Shane Battier orders you to comment!  Now!

Orlando getting blown out in Philly. And not because of Rafer’s shooting, either.

First play of the game

better be either a Yao dunk or a Yao three.

WHAT?

DID I JUST SEE ARTEST PASS UP THE THREE FOR A PASS TO YAO?

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 24, 2009 8:52 PM CDT reply actions

You saw it too?

I wasn’t sure it really happened.

by Xiane on Apr 24, 2009 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

lol..

that’s a shocker. if artest would be a good entry passer like battier then yao would shoot more. instead he has his dribblethon for 24 seconds then jacks up an unbalanced three. luckily his D makes up for it. especially tonight against b roy.

After seeing what's happened to the Rockets

in previous post-seasons, it’s good to see the improvement in their bench players and finally getting guys who can step up. From like 04 to 06, it used to be if Tmac and Yao were on the bench, the Rockets were screwed. Not anymore.

Orlando’s down big all game, and then they come back, to only lose at the buzzer. Houston had better figure themselves out before that happens though.

Between the Blazers and Rockets there will be almost no fast breaks. Nothing pretty about these games at all.

I’m not sure basketball was intended to be so punishing.

I mean we won… but it definitely wasn’t a confidence booster. I’m actually optimistic, because I don’t think the rockets can get any confidence from this win. So hopefully we’ll come out playing even harder than tonight

Rockets played much better today..

Unless they get a more experienced Point guard in the next two days, these games are going to be close. Both Von and Brooks made quite a few mental errors throughout the game, and they simply did not have the patience to get the ball to Yao..

i get the feeling brooks missed that FT on purpose in order to get his own rebound (to run off the clock etc) because he followed that ball TOO well to not have purposely missed..

I have a feeling that the outcome of game 4 will be highly in question.

van gundy started ranting about it after the second one at the 10 minute mark

…although, after that, I can’t say I remember seeing another obvious flop on either side.

Even though the score was close, this was exactly the kind of game the Rockets are going to win 9 out of 10. The Blazers need to get in the 90’s to swing the odds in their favor. The only way they are going to do that is to get normal production out of Roy, Aldridge and Outlaw AT THE SAME TIME.

You guys in Houston must be wondering what the whole deal is with the vaunted Blazer bench. Outlaw has been a shadow of himself and it has changed the complexion of the whole unit. Hell, he was guarded by Lowry half the time and still only had 4 pts. Unacceptable.

Ummm shit

lost my internet connection in the 1st quarter and finally got it back.

I’m surprised, I did not expect these home games to be this competitive, and it’s making me nervous.

Our defense played HARD tonight, and I can’t see it being any better than that.

Yao Ming played 36 minutes and got just 7 points on 7 shot. Embarrassing for the supposed best center in the league. The fact that a gimmick fronting strategy can completely take him out of the offense could end up costing us the series.

Maybe I was just spoiled by Dream, but I remember Hakeem putting the team and role players on his back and carrying them to wins. In this case, it’s the role players putting Yao on their backs and trying to carry him to a win. It worked today (barely), but it didn’t work in Game 2. How long can we hope the rest of the team carries the team to wins?

After seeing so many mistakes out there by the young guys (Wafer and Brooks mainly), it’s making me a little too nervous. If we find a way to lose one of these home games, it’s pretty much over, because I do not see us winning another road game in this series.

You know Yao might not get that many shots and he wasn’t hitting them tonight. But his Yao affect defensively is huge, it stopped LMA tonight from doing what he usually does.

-brandonmitchell.org

by brandonmitchell on Apr 24, 2009 11:44 PM CDT up reply actions

well

as its been mentioned a bunch of times before. Yao has done practically everything he could in this game (blocked shots, crashed the boards, drew doubles). if everyone not named battier is going to throw shit passes… what the hell can he do? hes helped the rockets more than anyone else so if we lose the series its on the coaching staff/ teammates who don’t give good passes (ie. brooks).

back when Hakeem was playing, fronting wasn’t as effective because of the contact allowed. Now when yao tries to beat the front, he gets called for an offensive foul…

by hardgay on Apr 24, 2009 11:46 PM CDT up reply actions

You can't just blame everyone but Yao

the main reason why it’s incredibly hard to get him the ball is because of his limited quickness. You pretty much have to deliver a perfect pass. Also he gets gassed too quickly, so it’s hard for him to establish post position on every play.

by goingforthecorner on Apr 24, 2009 11:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Not everyone else, specifically Brooks and Wafer in this game

Its not secret Yao’s slow, but to beat the front they have to swing the ball over to the other side. but what does wafer do instead? take the first shot he can with 15 seconds left on the clock. Brooks missed Yao on at least 2 good looks tonite. they need to work the ball around the perimeter at least once on every halfcourt set.

by hardgay on Apr 24, 2009 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

...

Still the fact we have to guard him so much leaves other guys like Wafer, Scola and Lowry open. That’s what kept hurting us and giving wide open lookers.

by hardgay on Apr 25, 2009 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Every time Bynum has faced Oden

Oden has pretty much owned him. Bynum’s had a few points against Przybilla, but Oden’s taken him out of the game rebounding wise, and mostly scoring wise.

To answer your question though

I would say the Kings need to take the best player on the board regardless of position unless it’s SF/SG. The good thing is that there aren’t a lot of those around this draft.

I"ve argued Rubio over Griffin if the Kings are in position tot take him. It’s not because I think Rubio fills a greater need (although that’s true too). The bottom line is that I think Rubio has a chance to be a franchise changing players, and I don’t see that in Blake Griffin honestly.

I don’t want this to be how Rubio or Griffin fits in with the rest of the team. I’ve always want to keep the debate centered around the real point: Who between the 2 is a franchise player? Who has greater potential to get there? Does need play a part in it?

The Rudy point I don’t want clouding up the issue.

Duran’ts ceiling may not be much higher than Oden’s, but his chance of reaching his full potential is about 5x higher.

by hardgay on Apr 25, 2009 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Oden's ceiling is top 10 NBA center with about a 5% chance of reaching it

Durant’s ceiling is greatest player of all time. Their is a HUGE difference

exaggerate much?

your moniker gives away your bias.

Durant’s ceiling is very high, no doubt. And he’s more likely to reach it than Oden is, no doubt.

But you are overstating Durant’s ceiling and chances of reaching it, while simultaneously understating both Oden’s ceiling and chance of reaching it

How did you guys win that?

A few things

1. I never gave a chance for Durant to reach it. But that IS his ceiling. I don’t think he’ll get there, I think Lebron will. But his stats his first two years are things ONLY Lebron has done in his career. And he already plays more defense than Jordan did in his first two seasons.

2. Wait a second, you think Oden has a chance to be higher than top 10 NBA center? Despite missing an entire season and half of another already? Really? Now who is being a homer?

top 10 center?

are you talking top 10 all time or top 10 currently playing?

He clearly can make top 10 now. Shit, Andres Biedrins is in the top 10 NOW

“whos payroll is Blake really on?”

pretty much

He gets a free pass up here in Portland, and don’t get me started on our TV commentator’s crush on “Blakey”.

A fine backup PG, I think. Can’t get his own shot. Tends to eff up royally at the end of close games. Gaaah, that was the worst one though…..

he did hit some big shots, but...

Blake’s stat lines often look better than his actual effectiveness IMO.

by aster on Apr 25, 2009 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions

true - but he was also one of the reasons that we were out of it

… so early – and I’m not talking about the bizarre shot with 9 seconds left. I’m talking about horrible bounce passes in the lane, inability to lead the break, and getting worked by Hou guards on the D end. I definitely agree that his play in the fourth was keeping us in it, though. We need a full four quarters from him in one of these games.

i must say

blakes line tonight would be a nostalgiac sight for raptors fans who don’t miss TJ ford. its the kinda night where he digs you out of a hole, but one that he helped dig you into in the first place.
i don’t see this happening again in this series.

The weirdest calls of the night

were the Roy step out of bounds and the Battier fall down… refs are calling what they expect to happen, as opposed to what is happening I suppose.

no.. that wasn’t a travel, he wasn’t sliding he just fell down and wasn’t moving. foul or no foul it’s not a travel.

Yea... obviously not a foul, but so what?

Blazers fans need to understand the history: Portland is such a small market that David Stern wouldn’t even grant it an expansion team in this day and age — Portland never has gotten, and never will get, a fair shake from the refs. The other teams will always get about twice as many calls per game, especially on the opposing home court. That has been the case in this series — and that ridiculous turnover by Battier is the perfect example.

The Blazers coaches know that, and they are the ones who lost the game — not the refs. To win as the Blazers you have to have a 10pt lead going into the final minute, or you’re f*cked. The Blazers needed to spend more time developing Bayless, instead of going for midseason wins with Blake; that’s the basic problem — shitty perimeter D, and stagnant or innefective offensive sets, because of Steve Blake’s slow legs.

by NeoSabonis on Apr 25, 2009 2:29 AM CDT up reply actions

OH please that's such horseshit

LMA wanted the clock stopped and sort of grabbed Battier on the shoe or leg, I can’t really tell which. He didn’t do a lot of protesting. I’m pretty sure the Blazers didn’t lose the game on LMA’s “Phantom” foul.

it isn't a foul until battier tries to stand up

the refs just saved the blazers about 2-4 seconds of clocktime. a total scandal.

by hardgay on Apr 25, 2009 2:34 AM CDT up reply actions

nothing but excuses..

all of u Portland fans think the refs and clock operator were for Houston. it is the exact opposite in Portland. on your home court, u may get some calls u would not on the road. the point is that the blazers could not execute down the stretch. ill say this for the 100th time. if b roy doesn’t have 30+ points a game, then they will not win, regardless if they only lose by 1 or 2 points. i still got rockets in 5.

Houston clock operator was pretty kind to them too

That was my big thought the whole last 20 secs or so.

no foul was committed, that much is obvious.

Bavetta just was anticipating one would be, instead of following the action as occurred.

So what. We had our chances, we didn’t make the plays. Houston did. End of story.

You're either a fool or a liar

if you seriously think LMA touched him at all before he slipped and travelled…
..
you watch in it HD? full screen? please freeze frame me the screen where LMA touched Battier.

anyway, point is, Battier choked hardcore, but Houston won, and Portland needs to anticipate that it’s not going to get these kind of calls.

by NeoSabonis on Apr 25, 2009 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Blake choked way worse than Battier tho

Houston played good D on Rudy, as you would expect, but that doesn’t mean you throw up a hail mary with 14 secs left

by NeoSabonis on Apr 25, 2009 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions

gudam you saboners

for the 3984943rd time, it is not a travel before the player tries to stand up again. if the refs didn’t call the phantom foul, battier would be chilling on the ground for about another 3 seconds before a blazer decided to jump on him. nobody thinks there was a foul, and these calls happen all the time in playoff games. sometimes they go in your favor sometimes they don’t. this time it actually went in the blazers favor (saved you guys an extra possession that blake).

by hardgay on Apr 25, 2009 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions

It wasn't a travel

You seem to know the rules, so I expect more from you. The foul call was AFTER he fell down anyway, so I really don’t know what you are talking about. Shane tosses the ball after the whistle blows so he could have just laid there and let the time run out.

No foul there. I admit. Calls go both ways though. Last game Rudy Fernandez tripped at the end and a foul was called.

by VBG on Apr 25, 2009 4:13 AM CDT reply actions

...

Because the reason why he was tripped was because of Artest’s right foot, I’m looking at it right now in slow motion on my dvr. Artest steps towards Rudy causing him to trip, the real issue is it wasn’t a fall on Lowry, it should’ve been a foul on Artest.

Battier tripped on his own, different situations and irrelevant why people keep bringing it up just because it was a last second play like tonights. And if you don’t believe me I can upload the video, but like mentioned before this play didn’t matter because it was Steve Blake’s mistake to air ball with 9 seconds left.

-brandonmitchell.org

by brandonmitchell on Apr 25, 2009 5:06 AM CDT up reply actions

...

After looking at it more Lowry actually does cause the trip, when running towards Rudy his left foot goes under Rudy’s foot causing the trip to start, then Artest steps towards Rudy so Rudy tries to avoid Artest’s foot. Then trying to avoid it Lowry’s right foot goes under Rudy’s foot again making him fall.

-brandonmitchell.org

by brandonmitchell on Apr 25, 2009 5:09 AM CDT up reply actions

...

Alright so I took screencaps instead of a video because they show it better. Remember they are running and the incident happens really close to the scoreboard so it was hard to see it.

The first incident was Lowry running with Rudy and his foot goes right under his causing the initial trip. Many of you said Rudy tripped on his own foot, this clearly shows otherwise.

Once again Lowry’s foot goes under Rudy’s which causes him to fall down, also notice that Artest is closer to Rudy so Rudy tries to avoid Artest and once Lowry’s foot goes under Rudy’s he falls.

This one is hard to see but this is the ‘contact’ between them, there was barely any which probably didn’t deserve a foul but the tripping of Rudy did.

I hope to god this ends the whole “RUDY TRIPPED ON HIS OWN FOOT” argument.

THANK YOU STEVE BLAKE!

Props to Steve Blake for Taking That Horrible Shot with 14 Sec Still Left on the Clock with a Red-Hot Rudy Fernandez Standing Right Next To Him…Haha… i live in So. Cal. and could hear the entire state of Oregon moaning when that puppy left Blake’s hands

If the Rockets can still win with Yao scoring 7 and Artest Scoring 9, Blazers are in big trouble
