What's up with the "Portland sucks" chants?
Was it our unsolicited concern and outpouring of love for Dikembe even though we're 'enemies' on the court right now? Was it our teams' mutual respect for each other and (until now) the mutual respect between the fans? Portland sucks? Really? Classy.

Excuse a few Houston idiots
As a Houston fan who was at the game, I’m sorry those chants broke out. I think by and large Houstonians didn’t condone that. Please excuse some of the few idiots in the crowd who incite that kind of behavior. It was mostly from one end of the stadium. As big a city as Houston is, we have a mix of people and unfortunately there are a few obnoxious people.
Portland fans showed great class in their building, and Houston fans are generally tamer than most and should keep their respectability. Utah we are not. Maybe its leftover aggression from playing Utah 2 years in a row?

It didn't sound like a vocal minority
It was quite clear on local TV. That being said, it was funny and kind of pathetic…

I said this on another thread
But I was watching it with a group of folks and we just started laughing at it because it was so basic and wussy…

seriously
I can’t believe you are complaining about this. Portland fans chanted that the refs sucked. Apparently the entire media row shook their heads in embarrassment.
I’ve heard some worse things from Portland crowds including booing Darius Miles for some crazy reason. What? How dare he try to make a comeback with another team after Portland releases him from his contract. The nerve of that guy.

good point about the Darius Miles thing
the Blazer-fan reaction (well, the reaction that I read around the internet) was generally pretty appalling. I know a lot of y’all didn’t have that attitude towards him, but the reaction of many of the fans and of the Blazers FO really turned me off the team.

I can understand the managements point of view just not the fans.
The Grizzlies signed Darius Miles pretty much just so they could keep the Blazers from competing for free agents over the summer. Both teams were going to have loads of cap space next year, but all the Grizzlies had to do was sign Darius and then the Blazers were out of the running. All teams have a good faith obligation not to sign medically retired players for the sake of hurting another teams finances.
I think the fans somehow confuse the business aspect of it and project their hate onto Darius, who is really the only 100% guilt free person in the whole situation. All he did was injure his knee, rehab it to the point where he could sort of play basketball again (but probably shouldn’t) and then the team released him under medical retirement.
It wasn’t like he had a choice in the matter.

See, I don't buy the Portland FO's argument, either
It seems to me that the Grizzlies did not simply hire Miles to screw over the Blazers (if I remember correctly, Miles played in many more games than would be required for the cap exception to be voided).
But, yeah, the hate towards Miles was entirely misplaced.

nope.
The Grizzlies released Miles and then only resigned him after someone in the media leaked that the preseason games that Miles had played would count towards the ten games need to put the money back on the Blazer’s cap space.
Different General Managers around the league were saying that the Grizzlies told them they were intending to sign Miles only to hurt the Blazers cap space. That’s when things started getting sketchy. No one from Blazers management complained when the Celtics signed Miles over the summer, it only became an issue when the Grizzlies started telling people they were signing him just to mess with the Blazers finances.
Teams have a good faith agreement not to do that.

Part of the Miles thing..
was Jailblazer history. Fans didn’t like him as an active player either. We definatley had gotten sick of the Jailblazers.
substance abuse issues ""did not care if the team were to lose the next 20 games"" said this during Cheeks last year I think.
-disruptive to chemistry
-not a team player
-tossing racial slurs at coach Maurice Cheeks
-poor attitude
Miles didn’t play for 2 seasons after his surgery.
Miles would’ve been booed regardless of the contract situation. The contract thing was basically salt on a wound which just added to the negativity he ended up bringing here. So he got more intensified booing. It’s more like, “man when will we finally be rid of this guy—still causing problems for us”.
Not defending it. it is what it is. Just know there’s more to it than the contract situation.
Portland fans, overall are pretty in touch with the team, it is the main show here. I’ve seen standing ovations for players with 3 pts but who’ve worked hard, took charges, and defended well. One thing we don’t like are jailblazer type players.
If Miles has a successsful career from here on out, more power to him. I hope he has grown these last few years. We’ll see if he sticks on memphis next season.
My view on it.

I am a Blazers fan.
You don’t have to tell me about the history. I remember watching Miles play back then, and I remember people being super excited about him. Paul Allen even said he wanted to build the franchise around Miles.
When Darius first injured his knee people in the local media accused him of faking it. He tried to play through it and that only made it worse. His two year rehab time was a result of the severity of the injury not his dedication to rehab. His microfracture was way worse than Oden’s so you can’t really compare the two.
Again, the last person you can blame in the situation is Darius.

except that he didn't take his rehab seriously until after he got cut.
The dude weighed over 300 pounds… that is not healthy when you are trying to recover from knee surgery.

You really probably won't reach the fans who chanted that over here in this site.
while it was pretty stupid, that’s not really some new unheard of chant you hear from sports crowds. To the people who are complaining, do you live sheltered lives or something? Is this really an issue?

I was at Game one, and as a fan of my Blazers, and basketball in general, I was embarrassed for my town. We are better than that. Sure there were some bad calls, but the Blazers lost that game big time. If we had lost by just a few points it would have been one thing, but we got schooled……
Right or wrong, who doesn’t love to heckle the reffs?
I just thought the “Portland sucks” chant was generic, was that the best Houston can come up with?
