Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Hey, I *told* you Chuck Hayes would be the unsung MVP!

Chuck Hayes with the save of the day.  Brandon Roy got the step, but the Chuckwagon held his ground and drew the all-important charge.  (I'm sure Portland fans will claim it was a flop... but it wasn't.)

Thank you, Mr. Hayes!!!

A77d3898-42d0-4edc-b72b-f4968a44c3d0_medium

Oh, and nice blocked shot just in case, Shane.  Very nice.

Aaron Brooks, however... you should have just stayed in the locker room and hung out with McGrady.  What was that effort you put up tonight?  And then missing two free throws in the end?  Yikes.

Fellas, you still need to win one more game.  If you keep missing FTs, Portland is not going to simply go away.  You are up 3-1, but it's way too close for my tastes.

GO ROCKETS!!!

in our gameday thread, pretty much everyone but the myopic homers agreed it was a good call.

Roy needs to recognize he’s going 1 on 3 and find an open teammate

How did you guys win that?

I agree...it was the right call.

My question though: If that were Kobe or LeBron would it still be a charge?

by Escrote on Apr 27, 2009 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I --think-- so

You never know. But it was such a classic play that I think it would be. If only so we could see the awestruck disbelief on the former or current Face of the NBA.

by Xiane on Apr 27, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

What's funny is

It really didn’t matter, the Rockets blocked the shot and recovered the ball, so it was their ball either way. That actually just stopped the clock instead of taking time off of it

lebron

wouldve been called for a lobster dribble (4steps instead of 3) before he ever got contact.

by hardgay on Apr 27, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Has LeBron EVER been called for that?

A lot of his dunks look like the run up to the triple-jump – no dribbling necessary.

AB did have a big rebound!

AB was off his game, but he did pull down that big rebound.

One more to go! Good call on the Chuckwagon!

AB had two big rebounds iirc

I mean, huge rebounds.

A win is a win

is a win. I don’t care if we hit a buzzer 93 foot three to win Tuesday, as long as I see that W.

by chrisjay84 on Apr 27, 2009 12:00 AM CDT reply actions

nobody is going to claim that was a flop, it was the correct call.

If we complain about the refs, it’ll be about the treatment of Oden (who gets away with about 1/50th of what Yao does) and the play where Landry and Roy held the ball for a good couple seconds before Landry ripped it away. Roy was called for a foul— looked to be a fairly clear jump ball.

However, this game wasn’t on the refs. Its on Portland for not rebounding and turning the ball over late.

I still expect Portland to win game 5 and fall in game 6, but I do think there is still maybe a 10% chance of Portland winning the series.

by jksnake99 on Apr 27, 2009 12:08 AM CDT reply actions

fwiw

yao gets called for fouls like that all the time during the reg. season…and he usually doesn’t get the calls on the offensive end

the difference so far is that the rockets are the far more aggressive team in this series. its like in baseball- the pitcher who pounds the strike zone tends to get the close pitches called strikes. the pitcher who nibbles and isn’t throwing strikes usually wont get the benefit of the doubt from an ump

by Evan Hochschild on Apr 27, 2009 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

IMO, I think the calls leaned in favor of...

Houston in first half but then leaned in favor of Blazers in second half. Ended up evening out over all. Few people at BEdge are blaming the game on refs.

We all know it was the rebounding and 2nd opp points by Houston. Like jksnake said, just the questionable touch fouls on Oden.

I thought they sucked

It seemed like anyone who so much as blinked at Roy called. And Oden was getting called for ticky-tack fouls as well.

But that charge was pretty clear-cut, imo.

it wan’t a flop, it was a good play. we only complain about the bad calls that are actually bad calls. and there are a lot of them since nba referees are in charge here.

by GoBlaze22 on Apr 27, 2009 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Plenty of bad calls went the Blazers way, Roy was over and back in the 1st minutes of the game.

They would not let anyone breath on Roy tonight, but that was OK. Trust me we think your bigs get away with murder on the defensive end. Just be glad Deke got hurt or we would be talking about a sweep. Not being arrogant, I really think Deke would have made a huge difference in this series.

by jase3217 on Apr 27, 2009 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions

In the last two games the Rocket's have been whistled for 16 and 18 fouls

That’s an obscenely low total for such a physical team.

Roy is virtually the only Portland player who’s drawn a foul in the last couple games, so apparently if he wasn’t getting the all-star/breath fouls it would be more even….. is that right?

by levelhed on Apr 27, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

The facts are

That Houston is not a particularly foul-prone team. Look it up. They know how to play D. You can be physical and play D without tons of calls.

Besides, how many FT attempts does BRoy, to my mind, the ONLY Blazer who seeks contact, have? Yes that’s correct. He has a metric shit-ton of FT attempts. So Portland, if you want calls, be like your star.

by Xiane on Apr 27, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

stats are nice...

but only if u analyze them in the right context. houston is last in the league in fouls committed. so its no surprise houston has less fouls…

by hardgay on Apr 27, 2009 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

according to yahoosports

houston is averaging about 2 more fouls a game in the playoffs. portland is averaging about 4 more.

by hardgay on Apr 27, 2009 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions

possibly a result of Oden playing in every game

seriously though, I’m tired of this particular canard from Portland fans. You can’t just point to foul totals and say “The Rockets are getting preferential treatment.” The issue is what percentage of “real” fouls are being called as such. We can’t know that, but we do know that the Rockets don’t foul very much, anyways. The only team that fouled less often during the reg. season was SA. They’re “physical” too, but being physical isn’t what earns you fouls.

by Only_A_Lad on Apr 27, 2009 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

that was a jump ball

plain and simple. I don’t know how anyone couldn’t see that.

by GoBlaze22 on Apr 27, 2009 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

you can't get a jump ball

if you never had control of the ball…

by hardgay on Apr 27, 2009 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions

i just did...

irc landry took it away less than a second after the rebound came down.

by hardgay on Apr 27, 2009 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

that is not what I am laughing at...

you can’t get a jump ball if you have possession… the only way a jump ball can be called is if neither player has sole possesion of the ball.

by Escrote on Apr 27, 2009 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

or

both players have equal possession of the ball? i guess this is a moot point.

by hardgay on Apr 27, 2009 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

That is a better way to say it

If you don’t control the ball at all, you can’t get a jump ball in your favor. And that is what you are saying

by UofTOrange on Apr 27, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It was ARGUABLY

a jump ball, but once Battier had it it was clearly a foul on a frustrated Brandon Roy.

by Artest4Prez on Apr 27, 2009 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously???

What exactly do you have to do for a jump ball to be called then, if not what Brandon did? And a foul afterwards…PLEASE!

You guys are simply delusional if you don’t see how much in favor of the Rockets the refs have been this entire series. Delusional.

That being said, you are playing better than we have been so that’s why you are winning, and I can’t blame the lossed on the refs. But they have been favoring your team since the first game.

Dunno

Roy drew some unbelievably ticky-tack fouls yesterday. I recall one play late in the game where Roy drove and Brooks took a swipe at the ball, missed everything, and got called for the foul. It was horrible.

I remember when I saw the supposed jump ball play live I thought it should have been a jump ball, but on replay it didn’t look as clear cut, although the foul after the non-jump ball was pretty obvious.

And, you know, it could be that you are as biased about the referees as I am. I was convinced the Rockets were getting screwed by the refs for much of the game. Then again, I was also convinced the Rockets were going to lose, and I was wrong about that.

When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.

by tehGrindCrusher on Apr 27, 2009 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

LOL.

It’s definately biased. Oh well, it’s been a hell of a series and a good way for the Blazers to learn how to play around stuff like that.

its been a great series

unfortunately the blazers are staring at elimination next game, but i think both teams have given 100% and basically apart from game 1, it has come down to a few plays at the end of game 2,3,4 and the rockets have been better.

kudos to both teams

Game winning Charge!!!!

Game winning shot or block I understand but a game winning charge is just too much. This series has been a great one. Rockets up 3-1 but other then game 1, it has been pretty tight. I love it!!

And give AB a break!!! he is a starter but in his second year has not become and All-Star. He will have bad games and miss clutch free throws but he is a quality point guard.

And I think T-mac will be gone if the rockets make it to the second round but I think we should keep him for his fourth quarter performances. Rockets proved they can hang with anyone from tip off to mid-3rd quarter. Its finishing the game that is T-mac department.

It’s not even the first time Chuck Hayes drew a charge in the final seconds of a close playoff game. (Game Five against Utah in ’07.)

Speaking of Utah, guess who’s gonna be eliminated tonight?

by Mejeh on Apr 27, 2009 7:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Personally I hope they survive all the way to Game 7. The series against Portland has been pretty tough (I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go to seven games) and there’s really no need to give the Lakers any extra rest while they’re waiting for their next opponent.

Sometimes Yao frustrates me

It’s probably unfair, because I always compare him to Hakeem. Not just Hakeem, but Hakeem when he torched the Admiral way back when. That’s totally unfair.

Having said that, I still think Yao is underutilized down the stretch. He looked gassed, but so what. He’d gotten Oden into foul trouble and Przbllyabs)(%za couldn’t guard him and was on four fouls, iirc. The Rockets should have been going to Yao on every play down the stretch imo. If Yao gets that ball anywhere near the paint, he is either a) going to score; b) going to draw a foul or c) both. Given that he is such a deadly free throw shooter, it’s criminal that they don’t go to him every possession in the last two/three minutes of the game.

And one other thing. Yao has such an amazing impact on the game. It is simply impossible to understate the degree to which he altered the Blazers’ offensive strategy last night. Guys like Aldridge and Roy were altering their shots when the got near the rim just because Yao was there, and Yao didn’t even have his hands up a bunch of the time.

When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.

by tehGrindCrusher on Apr 27, 2009 9:47 AM CDT reply actions

hey

If ABZ would just take the ball to the basket with regularity… Przy and Oden would have 3 fouls each by halftime every game. You’d be amazed how much easier it would be for Yao to get open in the 2nd half after that…

alas, Brooks forgets he’s the fastest guy on the court.

TAKE THE BALL TO THE BASKET, Rockets. Yao will be open for rebounds and dump-off passes!

by grungedave on Apr 27, 2009 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

If only ABZ would stop dribbling right to left and taking time of the clock,

that would be nice. Make a first pass, and then get the ball back. The blazers have perfected the art of pushing ABZ into a dribbling contest..
