Bring on the Lakers
The Lakers swept us during the regular season. At least 3 of those games were close – beyond close. I still hate Yao for taking that 2 point jumper when Brooks was wide open for three when we NEEDED 3 POINTS.
Hopefully those same mistakes will not follow us.
The playoffs are different. Each team is able to fully focus on the other, unlike the regular season. The Rockets should push this series far.
As a Rockets fan, I will be very surprised if we can beat the Los Angeles Kobes. We’ll see.
If there were any underdog in the 2009 NBA Playoffs, this series is a prime contender.

It's time for one last offseason, one last time to prune the roster. It was a great ride to 54 wins, and our playoff loss exposed the deficiencies we must address. In KP I trust.

Houston was competitive, and it ran into some hard luck. I’m sorry you’re too dense to understand that. And I’d rather watch my team compete and get some tough breaks than see them miss the playoffs for half a decade.

Not trying to stir the pot intentionally
but the Blazers made the playoffs 21 years straight, and in 14 of those 21 years, we lost in the first round. This included six straight years from 1993-1998 (including to Houston during your 1993-94 championship run!). So we, too, know mediocrity. Missing the playoffs in 2004 was a shock for me, since they team had made the playoffs every year since I was born. I wasn’t sure how to react, but within a couple years, the blueprint for the future was coming into focus and missing the playoffs didn’t seem like such a big deal anymore.
As a fan, I’m personally more excited to see a team built from scratch, by dumping all the bums off the team and getting higher quality players via draft/trade/FA, and looking forward to what the future holds at the expense of not making the playoffs for a few years, rather than bowing out of the first round year after year with no reasonable expectation for improvement in the following year other than “C’mon guys, you can do better!”. 1993-1998 was mostly a forgettable time period for Portland, mostly due to the team’s relative mediocrity. In contrast, the last few years have been an absolute thrill to be a part of, in spite of missing the playoffs until this season.

Great series Houston, you earned every part of it….now go out there and kick the crap out of Kobe, beat on him like you beat on Roy…if you let up just once I am going to be disappointed that you did that to us and not him. Push around Pau and make Bynum cry like the little school girl he is. You better play just as physical with them as you played with us.

To all those overconfident lakers fans: I know we’re the underdogs, but don’t punch your ticket to the finals yet. We’re coming hard and physical.
And to those Blazers fans: Count yourselves as lucky. You guys have a decade of deep playoff runs to look forward to, and one of the true swingman superstars in Roy. I’m a believe in his game now. To me, hes not all that far of from Dwade.

how do you differentiate between confident........
and overconfident. I am confident in the Lakers, but I don’t think I am overconfident. The series is obviously not a foregone conclusion, but I think the Lakers matchup well with the Rockets. I am not trying to put words in your mouth, but it seems that every Laker fan that thinks his team will win is “overconfident”. Kinda like every Laker fan who posts here is automatically a “troll”.

I would like to echo this statement
This was a great series by Houston. The Rockets fought hard and deserved to win this series. I would like to thank the Rockets for giving the Blazers a taste of playoff basketball. In the long run, I think it is much better for the Blazers to play against the team that matches up against them the best, the team that makes them work the hardest on every play and in every game than to have played against the Spurs or Hornets who would have given the Blazers a better shot at the 2nd round.
Congrats on moving on to the next round, especially after coming up short so many times in a row. I imagine it is a lot like being a Blazer fan over the past 5 years and finally making the playoffs this year.
And good luck against the Lakers. I have a feeling that a lot of the same things that worked against Portland will work against the Lakers. Fisher=Blake, Kobe is a bigger threat than Roy, but you gotta play them the same way, Ariza=Batum, Pau=Aldridge, Bynum is more dangerous than Oden, but plays in a similar way, Vujacic=Rudy…..I could go on. Suffice to say that I think you guys will give the Lakers more trouble than a lot of people think.

and about 100 to 1 against the epic Kobe sulk. Maybe one half, maybe even one game, but not one series. You are right about the Odom MIA thing, but he hasn’t been MIA very much at all this season. Really one of his best seasons ever, but not statistically.

No it doesn't look like a sulky year for Kobe. He seems very focussed.
Odom, though, that last series just might have been too much consistency.
But still, one historic Kobe tantrum could give us the series. Of course, you could be sporting and just play without him, to even up our loss of McGrady a bit.
by Xiane on May 1, 2009 1:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I echo my fellow Blazer fan's comments
I knew you guys were the toughest matchup for us going into the series, but playing against a team like Houston that’s had so much experience is going to teach us a lot in the long run.
In the end, you guys just wanted it more, loose balls just ended up in the hands of Rockets, you kept driving in to the basket, even with a sizeable lead. Well played.
Hope you whallop the L*kers in the next round. They’ve lived under a high power offense, but as you proved this series, even good offenses can be stifled. Slow the tempo down, and you’ve got a great shot.
Happy hunting! :)

In the last regular season game
I remember Kobe and Pau running the pick and roll successfully in the 4th quarter, and (presumably) Adelman being forced to substitute Hayes for Yao. Am I interpreting that correctly?
If so, how are the Rockets going to defend that play?
In this series, I think the key for the Lakers will be perimeter defense and help defense. They’re going to need to help Fisher keep Brooks from getting into the paint, and recover in time to contest shots near the basket and the corner three.
From my perspective, I think the key to Rocket success will be ball movement and 3pt shooting.
I’m assuming the Lakers have enough length and size to bother Yao.

Fair enough, I can't blame you for that, but......
I got the feeling that they really didn’t understand that it was offensive. Obviously anyone who is from the US gets it, but they all seemed shocked that it was taken as offensive. Maybe it’s a cultural thing. I have noticed in Europe (especially in Soccer) there seems to be a lot of bigotry and it is treated like no big deal….Of course Pau has been here long enough to understand it, so what do I know?

i’m not one to fight over the internet with people i don’t know. can we just have a civilized series here? is that possible or is everyone’s hatred of the lakers too deep rooted? you know how deep rooted laker hatred is? i’ve been coming to the dream shake from months and before today, i’ve only posted once or twice because once people find out i’m a laker fan, they attack me like i slapped their baby sister. it happens everywhere i go on the internet

No one really likes LA. You're going to have to accept that.
If you could see yourselves from an outside perspective you might understand why that is. As you possibly can’t it is doubtless hard to understand.
But we’re perfectly willing to be civil, ask Portland’s fans.

Is it the Lakers or LA....
cause I don’t like LA either.

Now see, Im a weirdo I guess. I actually really like LA. It is so upfront about what it is.
And the weather is nice.
Honestly, you probably don’t believe this, but in many ways LA is Houston, but with hills, an ocean and much nicer weather (in the summer mostly – winter here is very nice). Those extra things are why its so much bigger. And hey, we’re the Hollywood of the petrochemical industry…

Don't take this the wrong way, but I was in Houston once and it seemed like a ghost town...
Was I just there on the wrong few days or is that the way it is.

Where did you go? Downtown LA is a ghost town after 4pm.
Or it used to be.
by Xiane on May 1, 2009 1:54 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah we were staying downtown and it seemed like no one was around. Downtown LA is a ghost town after work hours.
They are working on it I guess. There is this new LA Live thing downtown now. It is built around Staples Center and Nokia Theater. ESPN Zone, movies, restaurants, museums, etc… Kinda cool actually. That’s where the new ESPN west coast Sportscenter HQ is at also.
I sound like I live there, but I live about 2.5 hours away and I go to a lot of games at Staples, so I see the area a lot.

That's happening here too.
Houston has made great strides in that area, though downtown is nowhere near as lively as say, Portland or Austin.
It’s like LA in that most of the action is in the neighborhoods. Though much less nowadays.
Thats all for me. Its late here. Night TDS.

I have tickets for Mondays game, but I think I am going to sell them. The drive is a bitch and I gotta work, but it would be fun to be there.

It actually rates as the safest big city downtown in the US.
That incident was just bizarre.

Well duh.......everybody likes the weather and the ocean. It's the smog, gangs, phonies, silicone boobs, and obnoxious celebrities that everyone hates.
So I guess you mean you hate the Lakers then and not LA?

No, I LIKE the phonies, the fake boobs, obnoxious celebrities.
Smog we have. You can keep the gangs.
I like that no matter how venal, depraved, selfabsorbed or grandiose your dreams, you have a chance of pulling them off in LA.

lol my mind was still stuck on the fake boobs when i read "pulling them off"
it’s getting late here in the Eastern time zone

not sure either
LA has its stereotypes, but most of them are good.
You’re always gonna find haters, especially when your team is one of the best in the league.
Refer to the Patriots in the NFL.

I still have this belief
that the Lakers signed Sun Yue mostly for marketing reasons

it’s not like Lakers weren’t already the most popular team behind Houston in China.

Fisher vs Blake
In an effort to point out the blatantly obvious… D.Fisher has literally killed our Rockets this year…
For anyone that thinks he may equal Steve Blake……Theres no comparison.. Fisher is 3 times the PG Blake is – Fisher is MUCH more physical, MUCH better defensively, and a Much better spot up shooter.. he has also given the inexperienced AB fits in every game ths season …
Lowry’s size has alllowed him to do much better against Fisher – and I suspect that Lowry’s minutes will increase substaintly in this series because of this…
GOOOO ROCKETS!!!
by mgfloyd37 on May 1, 2009 2:13 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I only looked up this year's stats
but Blake is the better shooter from 3 and they are equal overall percentage wise. Fisher is more physical, but how often is that useful? I don’t know how good Fisher is on defense, but knowing how poor Blake is I’d give Fisher the benefit of the doubt.
