Believe me, I would much rather see the Magic win this game also...
but they should not have relied on perimeter shooting only in the final minutes.

unlike a certain someone
he played hard most of the time.

I think this whole intentional foul sequence
just makes less and less sense the more I think about it. Should the strategy of intentionally fouling to gain an advantage in the closing minutes (or elsewhere, as with hack-a-shaq) be eliminated?
I'm not criticizing the coaches for doing it
I’m criticizing the league for allowing it. In virtually all other situations, fouling is a bad thing. But in the closing minutes of the game, teams suddenly gain an advantage by breaking the rules and slowing the game down to nothing. It’s neither interesting basketball nor an interesting strategic situation.
it shoudl be done like the breakaway fouls
free throws plus the ball back
omfg
are they having a free throw shooting contest?
"Hip-Thrust!" - Hard Gay
In case you're wondering, Hard Gay is married.
i must say
howard is a pretty clutch free throw shooter
I did want the Magic to win
But all the other teams I want to win… I’d trade that all in for the Rockets to beat the Lakers.
That's why I'm not cheering for anyone in any other series until this one is over
Well I did want the Mavericks to win last night because they were screwed on Saturday
haha i started watching when it was 85-75
i guess im bad luck for the magic

C'mon Rockets
Pull the biggest upset in NBA history, even if it comes at the expense of our Warriors taking out the Mavericks. Take down the Lakers and their annoying bandwagon ass nation
that would be a tough call
team missing virtually all of its stars beating the #1 seed, or a team barely above .500 beating a 67 win team.
With Yao
It wouldn’t be an upset at all. But this is a small ball team taking out a juggernaut. Not just a juggernaut, but a juggernaut with 2 seven footers.
My bandwagon Lakers fan co-worker was talking to me
and it slipped. I said gay-sol. I got used to calling him that.

we weren't down 25 by halftime
it’s called emotion by Houston on Sunday, Lakers shot poorly, and played poor defense. Those combined led to a big lead by Houston on Sunday (which the Lakers whittled down to 12 by the end). What’s Houston’s reason?
our tallest player on the floor is a 6'8" white guy?
"Hip-Thrust!" - Hard Gay
In case you're wondering, Hard Gay is married.
We played great offense and defense
You got to 12 cause we let you. Dont get all gassed up over the garbage time comeback.
I"m a be honest with you
I think the Lakers just underestimated the Rockets too much. Now, they know to take the game for real.
not really
the Rockets are getting beat by a great team that’s on fire. The Lakers were destroyed by a team with no one making more than $8 million.
Just speaking strictly on the point deficit guys
I would never compare the balls of the Lakers with that of the Rockets. NEVER
you guys played with big emotion
and the Lakers offense was BEYOND terrible. Even had they played decent defense, Houston was still gonna win.
Now that LA has made it’s adjustments, I can’t see Houston winning another game. Besides, who really believed that fury of emotion would carry through for another 2-3 games?
I said they would
I predicted a Game 4 loss, before Yao even went down. When he went down, I was even MORE sure Houston would win. Teams ALWAYS play better when they’re against the wall, a superstar goes down (Houston is a great example of this), and at home.
If they lose they will be against the wall again
You saying they will win game 6? Or do you think the Lakers wont lose again like your first post said? Make up your mind.
back against the wall
As in, everyone expected them to get swept. Getting 1 game was no real hard feat, the first game after Yao going down. Try to carry that emotion for 3-4 games over 6 to 8 days… not gonna happen.
36 points at the half?
for a team that averages over 100 pts per game? Yeah… so the offense was clicking. Gotcha.
actually...
I was talking about the Lakers on Sunday. How often this season has LA scored under 40 pts in a half?
hayes got some bullshit calls
came out, the Lakers made a run, and the Rockets suddenly can’t make an open shot.
64-39 ermm 25 deficit??

is Bynum in the game setting a screen on the low block for Gasol to flash to the top of the key, where he can take the open jumper, or toss it in to Bynum would should have GREAT position to simply turn around and dunk the ball. If none of that is available, find Kobe on the elbow for the jumper.
Well regardless of what they run

But for turnovers, the Rockets are playing well.
The shots are not going in. That happens..
They just need to stop bleeding with turnovers.. That’s it..
i think they came out with a little too much nervous energy
hopefully they got it out of their system and now they’ll stop banking shots on the opposite end of the rim and shots will fall and the turnovers will be cut down….

two issues
Game 1: Rust
Game 4: Complacency and Rockets emotion over the loss of Yao
not the way I saw this series going 6, but nobody’s perfect :)
no
but every game you lose isnt always tha losing teams fault. sometimes the winning team has somethin to do w/ it
perhaps
the reason a team got outplayed is because of their OWN faults and their OWN mistakes and their OWN misplays?
Dude stop making excuses
Why is it always LA’s fault that they lose. Why is it so hard to give the rockets some credit?
I give Houston credit for Game 4
Lakers came out complacent, which is why they went down BIG. Even had their offense been even close to it’s normal self, and our defense even close to average, Lakers still would have lost. Not with that much emotion, in a close game? No way Lakers would have won. Houston was on fire, they were dead set on winning the game, and nothing LA could do would stop it. LA’s own faults, mistakes, and misplays is what turned a potential close loss into a rout.
That was some shitty credit
That was like saying, I’m not racist BUT …
The whole post was pretty much about how the Lakers didnt do things right. Not really giving credit except when you said they were on fire. Not enough man. They did way more.
I'll give you game 4
even though a championship contender has no reason to lose focus in the playoffs. but all I heard about game 1 was tha bullshit rust excuse and nothin about tha great D tha Rockets played
Try to remember that when the Rockets get beat in six and all the crybabies on this board start using the Yao excuse for why you got whupped.

it's called turnabout is fairplay
Lakers fans got tired of hearing people dispute the “What if Bynum was healthy” talk by all fans… so some want to then dismiss those who reason that injuries is why they lost…. while others understand because they fully remember last season
and yes, Yao > Bynum by far. But Bynum is key to alot of things the Lakers do. Not offensively, but defensively.
Exactly. This was the team with the “heart” and energy to beat the Lakers?

I… despite the ass whupping, watched thru the entire game on Sunday. As such, I was proud to see the Lakers make spirited effort in the 4th to pull it to a respectable deficit. The Lakers everyone else seems to think this team is would have lost by 40 or more. This one didn’t, and it made me quite happy. The first 3 quarters were an embarassment, but the 4th was a nice breath of fresh air.
What do rockets fans

So… do we have 15+ minutes of garbage time at this point? Or are the Rockets actually going to try to come back? The body language, to me, suggests the former.
Houston has heart
I expect them to make a big push to get it as close as possible, for reasons of pride alone.
I sure hope so.
On a slightly related note, I have to say I like what I just saw from Brian Cook. He may be a garbage time player, but he seems to be earnest. Nice dive for the ball just then.

former Lakers
recently always play great against LA. See Cook, Maurice Evans, Radmanovic, Kwame Brown, Turiaf, etc… (Turiaf wasn’t traded, however)
good signing
what did he finish, Top 5 in blocks? I still don’t understand how Mitch thinks Powell is better than Turiaf. Sure, Powell can actually hit an open jumper… but Turiaf DEFENDS, and can REBOUND.
lots of them
too many players to keep track of that have had big games against us… hell, watch, next year Chris Mihm is gonna drop 20-20 on the Lakers!

yes it was
i will agree it probably shoulnd’t have been called, but it was a off arm clear out.
given the amount of contact being allowed
no, it should not have been. And, while there was an arm, it doesn’t appear to have really affected anything.
If the Lakers win a title in the Gay-sol era
That shit’s tainted. We all know it wasn’t a fair trade. Fairy West is a former Laker who just gave Gay-sol to them.
you mean like the celtics?
who got KG from former celtic kevin mchale (who is friends w/ celtics gm danny ainge)

you’re trippin. The Cs gave up Al Jefferson, Telfair, and Ryan Gomes. Jefferson and Gomes alone were worth the trade.

ditto
Wade loves Miami, and Riley is already trying to lock him up. Although I’ve spent all season arguing with Bulls fans who think that simply because he’s from Chicago he’ll come running back (plus to play with Rose).
Lebron loves Ohio, and if Cleveland can remain relevant (which they will), there’s no need to go to New York. He can still be a superstar in Cleveland. He doesn’t need New York.

Kobe might hear you in LA and try to push this to 60… then you can do the New Orleans Hornets a favor so they don’t have to share the load of the WORST playoff performance of all time.
Shaq wants to know from Kobe how his ass taste
Maybe you can tell him how the Celtic dick tastes too
how's missing the playoffs taste?
Shaq, for all his shit talking, has missed the playoffs 4 times. Kobe? ONCE.
when Shaq wins one without a superstar SG to win it for him...
then Shaq can talk shit.
Penny… Kobe… Wade…
let’s see Shaq lead a team to the Finals by himself. Never happened… Never WILL happen.
and kobe?
he didnt start having success w/o shaq until gasol got there. lets see him get it w/o a great big man
ummm
Lakers were in 1st place b4 Gasol went down with Bynum in the middle.
And if u suggest Bynum at that point was even close to a true All-Star talent… well, we now know you’re just reaching.
half a season of success w/o gasol
congrats. doesnt mean they were title contenders. everyone bumped em up to that as soon as they got gasol
we can do this all night
the fact is, you can’t find a single player who won a title single handily. Even MJ had to have Pippen and Horace Grant and Steve Kerr and Dennis Rodman.
You cannot rebuild a veteran team overnight. It takes 2-3 years, and if you look at the progression of the team, they were on the way up.With or without Gasol, this team is a contender. W/o Gasol, (and let’s say Bynum never got hurt), this Lakers squad would be on the same level as Houston, Portland, Utah, Denver, NO, etc. A big jumble of contenders. And with Kobe in LA’s backpocket, I’d still take LA to win outta that group.
tha lakers w/o gasol is tha same team from 3 years ago
just w/o caron butler. and take a look at tha ‘94 Rockets and find Hakeem’s other star player. it was him and a bunch of role players.
oh wow
BURN!!! BURN LAKERS FANS!! BURN!
I’m so hurt. Give me a break. How many times have we heard that this year? Why? Because you ain’t got anything better. Come back when you got something ORIGINAL.
its the truth
why would i have to bring something new? should I talk about their quit job in game 7 against PHX a few years ago?
the one thing I can say to that is...
and your brought this upon yourself, btw…
but atleast the Lakers have deep runs in the playoffs to look forward to year after year after year. Until this year, Houston would consider itself FORTUNATE to even make it out of the first round. Come back when Houston has the level of success LA does.
I for one would personally rather have a chance to win the championship EVERY YEAR, even if I come in 2nd place alot, than have NO chance at all, missing the playoffs, or getting wiped out in the first round year after year (x4).

he didn’t make the picks on the series page… but you know he will take any chance to pick against LA… I’m sure he probably even picked Utah to beat LA in 5.
Oh no, wait, that was probably John Hollinger.
well one man or two
doesn’t make the Rockets favorites (unless it was stern)

About winning another series against a short handed team. Same thing happened with the Lakers last year and then they played a full strength team in the finals and lost. Expect it to happen this year, only I’m pretty sure the thuggets are going to stomp LA.
Life is hilarious.
One things Rockets...
..Please don’t pass up the Hornets for the worst playoff loss ever…KThanks
Game 6 will be a dogfight
The toughest teams in this playoffs have been the Celtics and the Rockets, followed closely by the Bulls and the Nuggets. It’s not even close

Sasha Vujacic won’t be a Laker next season. After THIS… there’s no way they can possibly keep him. I’m sure you can find someone… ANYONE… on the streets of LA who can shoot better than him, and whine half as much.

tolerates (hell, even encourages) a certain level of “mature” content. That’s just the way Dave/Lee/Tom run things.
What we don’t tolerate, however, is trolling fans on this site. There’s a thin line between “legitimate, if uncouth, trash-talk” and outright “troll.” It’s tough to cross that line. You never came close to crossing it.
But, if you read this site, you need to recognize that very few jokes are going to get anybody banned. Racist/sexist/homophobic jokes and slurs are pretty much automatic bans, but even tasteless jokes (such as what was written above) are fine.
I can take a joke
But fucking pigs? Really? And you banned the one guy who was talking about heart?

I will make one post b/c this game does not deserve more
1)at the time of writing this…brian cook(who has barely played all season) has played 12 mins with ZERO points and wafer 9 minutes 9 points, please bring rafer back to slap coach sleepy aweake.
2) GEEZ really? At the very very LEAST 3 of those fouls on Hayes were complete BS! Suddenly the lowest fouling team during the season becomes an uber fouling team in a very non physical game???? Ok then.
3)realistically less than 35% shooting will never keep you in a game with LA. Especially like 20 missed threes.
4)Walton is a pussy and a dirty piece of c*ap, as is Fisher purposely tripping brooks because he can’t keep up with him(which really? A simple foul? If there wasn’t malicious intent there, then I don’t know where there is). And Vujacic and Walton are the biggest floppers, someone needs to tell them that basketball is about putting a ball through a hoop, not flailing your arms and falling on the ground.
4.2) seriously! Did anyone see that play where Walton falls over then a rocket falls over then another laker falls over, I mean SERIOUSLY???? GROW UP AND PLAY BASKETBALL!!!! YOU’RE UP BY 40 YOU DON’T NEED TO FLOP. AND if I’m not mistaken it was Scola on our side…..same goes to you!!!!!!
5)Bring back JVG or….and this would be AWESOME…Rudy T.
5.2)save the arguments about Adleman being great…there’s a reason he’s never won the whole thing. This team is awesome because of Daryl Morey. He’s picked and chosen pieces that fit together perfectly. He doesn’t rely on superstars(he didn’t bring in Yao and Tmac).
6) Morey is to the Rockets what Hunsicker was to the Astros(and now the Rays for that matter and look where they are now…while Les is [and has been voted] the best owner in sports, McLane has to be top 20 for worst). GO Morey and GO Les!
7)Kick ass in H-Town in game six Rox!!!!!!!
p.s. by now #1 has changed and probably proven my point even more!
really? that was his one chance? and his only good team?

Rick Adelman
had a long run of success with the blazers in the early 90’s, although he couldn’t win it all he went to the finals twice. The man has an elite playoff resume. Among active coaches, I believe that only Doc Rivers, Larry Brown, “Zen” master, Pat Riley, and Gregg Popovich have won championships. Those five, plus Rudy T are the only coaches to have won titles dating back to 1990, a span of 18 years. Adelman, Byron Scott, Jerry Sloan and Mike Brown are the only other active coaches in the NBA to have even been in the finals, which means Adelman is 1 of only 9 active coaches to have NBA finals experience. That firmly esconces him in the elite category, don’t you think?
"B-Roy is the best shooting guard I have played against"
-Ron Artest
If Artest can say it, so can I. Broy>Kobe.
I'm not arguing elite category
But the fact that you likened him to Jerry Sloan simply proves my point. I respect the guy for all he’s accomplished but imho the guy has HORRIBLE in game personnel decisions. And imho that’s why he’s never won it all. I’d rather have JVG back. Rick has no ability for what has already been mentioned, if you can explain his offense I’d truly appreciate it(because I don’t see it), he’s always just sitting there(a lump on the bench), and seems to have some ridiculous idea that his starters have to always play a certain amount of minutes. At this point I want Morey to hire Lou Pinella, a crappy call and he’ll pull the whistle off the ref and start kicking it all over the court, then cut down the net and throw it at the feet of the refs(obviously a joke but I just want sleepy to wake up!!!!!)

The bigger question is… where is the heart and toughness that Houston supposedly had?
again
they fought for loose balls, they played defense, but LA executed and the shots weren’t falling. You’re just looking at the result, seeing the deficit, and saying the desire to win is gone.
Dude, you went from competent, thoughtful Laker poster to TROLL

And again – the heart and toughness is still there. Nobody quit, they just got their asses handed to them by a more talented team, and we were just down way too many soldiers.

In past games he was a decent fan, now its degraded to near troll levels.
so...
Lakers go down by 20, 30, lose by 15, 20, 30, 40… and they have no heart, no effort
Houston loses by 40 and ties their worst playoff loss in franchise history… and they just got outplayed?
See the double standard?
No. If you would actually read my posts, you’d see the difference.
The Lakers Q U I T on Sunday. They didn’t dive for loose balls. They didn’t put max effort into ANYTHING. THe Rockets were still diving all over the place in this game – and they were down SO many players. They just got their asses kicked. THe Lakers are talented. They have the best player in the league. They were the best in the West. I give ALL credit to them.
But your precious Lakers QUIT on Sunday. The result is the same, but the effort couldn’t have been more different, troll.

there's no double standard
You don’t understand the point. The Rockets are without a center. Understand? That limits every aspect of any basketball team. Today, the Lakers capitalized on that. Shit happens. But the Rockets were always hustling, trying to get the rebounds, it just didn’t happen. The odds were against them. Today, it worked out like this
Then again

This had nothing to do with Houston's heart
You don’t sink threes with your heart, it’s really that simple
Everything else they did was ok, except for the to-s but that was the matter of losing self-confidence. You never saw a Rocket justing standing around, they were hustling, but this kind of shit happens to you. Usually, when you’re doing an uphill battle

Yao spearheaded the 12 game winning streak, then went down and McGrady came back and took his place. It also helped that the entire team was high on weed, and we played mostly easy opponents (not to take away anything from our guys).

So you still went on a 10 game winning streak without your best player. T-mac i can say wouldn’t have done anything, he is past his time and you guys are better offensively and defensively without him. Their are no excuses in the NBA Playoffs, we didn’t make any after the 39 point loss to boston, why should you guys get a free pass?

Every day it’s a new headline, a new story. And because the Lakers are the Lakers, they take more flak for losing, and get more credit for winning, than other teams do.

see you on thursday
and honestly, I’m very nervous. This is why I prefer the 2-2-1-1-1 format. Keeps you on your toes. Stern needs to shove the 2-3-2 format up MLB’s ass, where it belongs.
The initial idea was that the Rockets match up better without Yao because the Lakers’ speed line-up was neutralized. Chuck Hayes, while not a shotblocker, is a better defender than Yao. 1) His post defense gives Pau fits, 2) He’s phenomenally quick, meaning he can show much harder on the PnRs and recover, and also that his help on drives is excellent. So defensively, maybe an upgrade especially in PnR defense (although the loss of the length definitely hurts).
Clearly, hardgay’s right – the Rockets are not a better team without their best player. On Sunday that was hidden because Yao’s greatest value (on offense) was filled with great spacing and ball sharing. Tonight, the offense really needed Yao. In addition, Hayes went to the bench with foul trouble and Pau really turned it on. Clearly, we’re not playing the Rockets at their best and hardgay’s dead on in that regard.
agree with everything except
that chuck hayes is a better one on one defender than Yao, but he isn’t able to alter shots like Yao can. The Lakers took it to the rim alot more often tonite, and nobody could 1) change the shot 2) grab the damn rebound. Yao does both very well for us.
But no complaints here, we lost fair and square.
"Hip-Thrust!" - Hard Gay
In case you're wondering, Hard Gay is married.
Yeah that's what I meant about the length
Hayes does a great job of getting position and drawing charges, but you can’t really replace length.
Anyway, good luck to you guys too. I knew going in that whoever comes out of this series, I’d end up rooting for the rest of the way. Should be a good one in Game 6.
I can't say I'll root for you guys all the way :P
but see you in game 6. best of luck (to the rockets of course).
"Hip-Thrust!" - Hard Gay
In case you're wondering, Hard Gay is married.
exactly
Chuck is great to have as a 4 defender, but if you play him at the 5 the whole game, there’s no one coming from the weak side to defend on drives to the basket. I was reading an interview with Shane that talked about this: perimeter defenders like him need someone behind them on drives to the basket. Yao’s not there to threaten and alter shots, so the interior defense is just collapsing without a result.
And by the way – I don’t even COUNT T-Mac. He’s been gone a long time.
You think if Kobe was hurt you wouldn’t be making “excuses?”
Chris - www.HoustonDiehards.com
by HoustonDiehards on May 13, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions
I've said it before in this thread
The Rockets lost because Hayes got into foul trouble early, the Lakers then went on a run, and the Rockets couldn’t buy a made open shot. The Lakers executed on offense and defense, the Rockets did not. I don’t think the refs helped any, but that’s not why they lost.
And don’t compare me to those desert fuckers.
Its plainly obvious
we lost. we were outplayed, and outhustled from the get go. Our guys played hard, but not smart and we had guys trying to do too much. But this was somewhat expected since over half of our teams talent are sitting in the suit section of the bench. The Lakers outplayed us, fair and square.

I suppose we can respectfully end our disagreement here.
"Hip-Thrust!" - Hard Gay
In case you're wondering, Hard Gay is married.
One stat I just saw that I had to post:
The only Rockets over 50% shooting: Carl Landry and Brent Barry.
I hope you guys play better in game 6, always liked the Rockets’ way of doing things. Game 6 should be a lot closer, at the very least.
I mean, starting lineup scoring: 6 points on 6 shots, 5 points on 7 shots, 9 points on 15 shots. 12 points in 10 shots and 14 in 12 is … slightly better.
Sometimes the ball just doesn’t want to go in the hole.
[And maybe the Lakers were on fire offensively too? I didn’t watch.]
"Ben Gordon is a bundle of muscle and clutch. That's all he's made of. Drink BG7 energy drink, you'll grow a pair of balls on your balls."
If anyone's watching the postgame show
the Rockets apparently sent Kenny Smith one of those red blazers. Awesome.
