but they should not have relied on perimeter shooting only in the final minutes.

I think this whole intentional foul sequence

just makes less and less sense the more I think about it. Should the strategy of intentionally fouling to gain an advantage in the closing minutes (or elsewhere, as with hack-a-shaq) be eliminated?

by Only_A_Lad on May 12, 2009 9:32 PM CDT reply actions

I mean

this is just boring basketball

by Only_A_Lad on May 12, 2009 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not criticizing the coaches for doing it

I’m criticizing the league for allowing it. In virtually all other situations, fouling is a bad thing. But in the closing minutes of the game, teams suddenly gain an advantage by breaking the rules and slowing the game down to nothing. It’s neither interesting basketball nor an interesting strategic situation.

C'mon Rockets

Pull the biggest upset in NBA history, even if it comes at the expense of our Warriors taking out the Mavericks. Take down the Lakers and their annoying bandwagon ass nation

by Golden Boy on May 12, 2009 9:39 PM CDT reply actions

that would be a tough call

team missing virtually all of its stars beating the #1 seed, or a team barely above .500 beating a 67 win team.

It wouldn’t be an upset at all. But this is a small ball team taking out a juggernaut. Not just a juggernaut, but a juggernaut with 2 seven footers.

by erod on May 12, 2009 10:44 PM CDT reply actions

Not even CLOSE to the same thing

They lost because they’re a bunch of quitters who have NO GRIT when the chips are down.

We’re losing because we’re outmanned and outgunned.

by HoustonDiehards on May 12, 2009 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

we weren't down 25 by halftime

it’s called emotion by Houston on Sunday, Lakers shot poorly, and played poor defense. Those combined led to a big lead by Houston on Sunday (which the Lakers whittled down to 12 by the end). What’s Houston’s reason?

I think the Lakers just underestimated the Rockets too much. Now, they know to take the game for real.

by Golden Boy on May 12, 2009 10:45 PM CDT up reply actions

not really

the Rockets are getting beat by a great team that’s on fire. The Lakers were destroyed by a team with no one making more than $8 million.

Just speaking strictly on the point deficit guys

I would never compare the balls of the Lakers with that of the Rockets. NEVER

by erod on May 12, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

you guys played with big emotion

and the Lakers offense was BEYOND terrible. Even had they played decent defense, Houston was still gonna win.

Now that LA has made it’s adjustments, I can’t see Houston winning another game. Besides, who really believed that fury of emotion would carry through for another 2-3 games?

by tandur on May 12, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions

so true

I kept hearin em say they werent gonna lose another game after games 2 and 3

by TitanFan2K on May 12, 2009 10:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I said they would

I predicted a Game 4 loss, before Yao even went down. When he went down, I was even MORE sure Houston would win. Teams ALWAYS play better when they’re against the wall, a superstar goes down (Houston is a great example of this), and at home.

by tandur on May 12, 2009 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions

If they lose they will be against the wall again

back against the wall

As in, everyone expected them to get swept. Getting 1 game was no real hard feat, the first game after Yao going down. Try to carry that emotion for 3-4 games over 6 to 8 days… not gonna happen.

the reason a team got outplayed is because of their OWN faults and their OWN mistakes and their OWN misplays?

by tandur on May 12, 2009 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude stop making excuses

Why is it always LA’s fault that they lose. Why is it so hard to give the rockets some credit?

by erod on May 12, 2009 11:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I give Houston credit for Game 4

Lakers came out complacent, which is why they went down BIG. Even had their offense been even close to it’s normal self, and our defense even close to average, Lakers still would have lost. Not with that much emotion, in a close game? No way Lakers would have won. Houston was on fire, they were dead set on winning the game, and nothing LA could do would stop it. LA’s own faults, mistakes, and misplays is what turned a potential close loss into a rout.

by tandur on May 12, 2009 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

That was some shitty credit

That was like saying, I’m not racist BUT …

it's called turnabout is fairplay

Lakers fans got tired of hearing people dispute the “What if Bynum was healthy” talk by all fans… so some want to then dismiss those who reason that injuries is why they lost…. while others understand because they fully remember last season

and yes, Yao > Bynum by far. But Bynum is key to alot of things the Lakers do. Not offensively, but defensively.

I… despite the ass whupping, watched thru the entire game on Sunday. As such, I was proud to see the Lakers make spirited effort in the 4th to pull it to a respectable deficit. The Lakers everyone else seems to think this team is would have lost by 40 or more. This one didn’t, and it made me quite happy. The first 3 quarters were an embarassment, but the 4th was a nice breath of fresh air.

Lebron loves Ohio, and if Cleveland can remain relevant (which they will), there’s no need to go to New York. He can still be a superstar in Cleveland. He doesn’t need New York.

Still playing hard, still diving on the floor.

Your team straight up quit. A team that was in the finals last year, with the most talented player in the league, literally up and QUIT on Sunday, like a bunch of coddled bottle-fed babies.

Sure, the result is the same, but when your only two big men are gone, there’s only so long you can keep up the hot shooting.

congrats. doesnt mean they were title contenders. everyone bumped em up to that as soon as they got gasol

by TitanFan2K on May 13, 2009 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

we can do this all night

the fact is, you can’t find a single player who won a title single handily. Even MJ had to have Pippen and Horace Grant and Steve Kerr and Dennis Rodman.

You cannot rebuild a veteran team overnight. It takes 2-3 years, and if you look at the progression of the team, they were on the way up.With or without Gasol, this team is a contender. W/o Gasol, (and let’s say Bynum never got hurt), this Lakers squad would be on the same level as Houston, Portland, Utah, Denver, NO, etc. A big jumble of contenders. And with Kobe in LA’s backpocket, I’d still take LA to win outta that group.

the one thing I can say to that is...

and your brought this upon yourself, btw…

but atleast the Lakers have deep runs in the playoffs to look forward to year after year after year. Until this year, Houston would consider itself FORTUNATE to even make it out of the first round. Come back when Houston has the level of success LA does.

I for one would personally rather have a chance to win the championship EVERY YEAR, even if I come in 2nd place alot, than have NO chance at all, missing the playoffs, or getting wiped out in the first round year after year (x4).

What we don’t tolerate, however, is trolling fans on this site. There’s a thin line between “legitimate, if uncouth, trash-talk” and outright “troll.” It’s tough to cross that line. You never came close to crossing it.

But, if you read this site, you need to recognize that very few jokes are going to get anybody banned. Racist/sexist/homophobic jokes and slurs are pretty much automatic bans, but even tasteless jokes (such as what was written above) are fine.

I will make one post b/c this game does not deserve more

1)at the time of writing this…brian cook(who has barely played all season) has played 12 mins with ZERO points and wafer 9 minutes 9 points, please bring rafer back to slap coach sleepy aweake.
2) GEEZ really? At the very very LEAST 3 of those fouls on Hayes were complete BS! Suddenly the lowest fouling team during the season becomes an uber fouling team in a very non physical game???? Ok then.
3)realistically less than 35% shooting will never keep you in a game with LA. Especially like 20 missed threes.
4)Walton is a pussy and a dirty piece of c*ap, as is Fisher purposely tripping brooks because he can’t keep up with him(which really? A simple foul? If there wasn’t malicious intent there, then I don’t know where there is). And Vujacic and Walton are the biggest floppers, someone needs to tell them that basketball is about putting a ball through a hoop, not flailing your arms and falling on the ground.
4.2) seriously! Did anyone see that play where Walton falls over then a rocket falls over then another laker falls over, I mean SERIOUSLY???? GROW UP AND PLAY BASKETBALL!!!! YOU’RE UP BY 40 YOU DON’T NEED TO FLOP. AND if I’m not mistaken it was Scola on our side…..same goes to you!!!!!!
5)Bring back JVG or….and this would be AWESOME…Rudy T.
5.2)save the arguments about Adleman being great…there’s a reason he’s never won the whole thing. This team is awesome because of Daryl Morey. He’s picked and chosen pieces that fit together perfectly. He doesn’t rely on superstars(he didn’t bring in Yao and Tmac).
6) Morey is to the Rockets what Hunsicker was to the Astros(and now the Rays for that matter and look where they are now…while Les is [and has been voted] the best owner in sports, McLane has to be top 20 for worst). GO Morey and GO Les!
7)Kick ass in H-Town in game six Rox!!!!!!!
p.s. by now #1 has changed and probably proven my point even more!

by cougarRoxFan on May 13, 2009 12:09 AM CDT reply actions

Rick Adelman

had a long run of success with the blazers in the early 90’s, although he couldn’t win it all he went to the finals twice. The man has an elite playoff resume. Among active coaches, I believe that only Doc Rivers, Larry Brown, “Zen” master, Pat Riley, and Gregg Popovich have won championships. Those five, plus Rudy T are the only coaches to have won titles dating back to 1990, a span of 18 years. Adelman, Byron Scott, Jerry Sloan and Mike Brown are the only other active coaches in the NBA to have even been in the finals, which means Adelman is 1 of only 9 active coaches to have NBA finals experience. That firmly esconces him in the elite category, don’t you think?

by premthegrem on May 13, 2009 1:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not arguing elite category

But the fact that you likened him to Jerry Sloan simply proves my point. I respect the guy for all he’s accomplished but imho the guy has HORRIBLE in game personnel decisions. And imho that’s why he’s never won it all. I’d rather have JVG back. Rick has no ability for what has already been mentioned, if you can explain his offense I’d truly appreciate it(because I don’t see it), he’s always just sitting there(a lump on the bench), and seems to have some ridiculous idea that his starters have to always play a certain amount of minutes. At this point I want Morey to hire Lou Pinella, a crappy call and he’ll pull the whistle off the ref and start kicking it all over the court, then cut down the net and throw it at the feet of the refs(obviously a joke but I just want sleepy to wake up!!!!!)

Houston loses by 40 and ties their worst playoff loss in franchise history… and they just got outplayed?

See the double standard?

by tandur on May 13, 2009 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

No. If you would actually read my posts, you’d see the difference.

The Lakers Q U I T on Sunday. They didn’t dive for loose balls. They didn’t put max effort into ANYTHING. THe Rockets were still diving all over the place in this game – and they were down SO many players. They just got their asses kicked. THe Lakers are talented. They have the best player in the league. They were the best in the West. I give ALL credit to them.

by tandur on May 13, 2009 1:32 AM CDT up reply actions

The initial idea was that the Rockets match up better without Yao because the Lakers’ speed line-up was neutralized. Chuck Hayes, while not a shotblocker, is a better defender than Yao. 1) His post defense gives Pau fits, 2) He’s phenomenally quick, meaning he can show much harder on the PnRs and recover, and also that his help on drives is excellent. So defensively, maybe an upgrade especially in PnR defense (although the loss of the length definitely hurts).

Clearly, hardgay’s right – the Rockets are not a better team without their best player. On Sunday that was hidden because Yao’s greatest value (on offense) was filled with great spacing and ball sharing. Tonight, the offense really needed Yao. In addition, Hayes went to the bench with foul trouble and Pau really turned it on. Clearly, we’re not playing the Rockets at their best and hardgay’s dead on in that regard.

by Snoopy2006 on May 13, 2009 1:00 AM CDT up reply actions

agree with everything except

that chuck hayes is a better one on one defender than Yao, but he isn’t able to alter shots like Yao can. The Lakers took it to the rim alot more often tonite, and nobody could 1) change the shot 2) grab the damn rebound. Yao does both very well for us.
But no complaints here, we lost fair and square.

Yeah that's what I meant about the length

Hayes does a great job of getting position and drawing charges, but you can’t really replace length.

Anyway, good luck to you guys too. I knew going in that whoever comes out of this series, I’d end up rooting for the rest of the way. Should be a good one in Game 6.

by hardgay on May 13, 2009 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

exactly

Chuck is great to have as a 4 defender, but if you play him at the 5 the whole game, there’s no one coming from the weak side to defend on drives to the basket. I was reading an interview with Shane that talked about this: perimeter defenders like him need someone behind them on drives to the basket. Yao’s not there to threaten and alter shots, so the interior defense is just collapsing without a result.

by Only_A_Lad on May 13, 2009 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions

And by the way – I don’t even COUNT T-Mac. He’s been gone a long time.

You think if Kobe was hurt you wouldn’t be making “excuses?”

by HoustonDiehards on May 13, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I've said it before in this thread

The Rockets lost because Hayes got into foul trouble early, the Lakers then went on a run, and the Rockets couldn’t buy a made open shot. The Lakers executed on offense and defense, the Rockets did not. I don’t think the refs helped any, but that’s not why they lost.

And don’t compare me to those desert fuckers.

by Only_A_Lad on May 13, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Its plainly obvious

we lost. we were outplayed, and outhustled from the get go. Our guys played hard, but not smart and we had guys trying to do too much. But this was somewhat expected since over half of our teams talent are sitting in the suit section of the bench. The Lakers outplayed us, fair and square.

One stat I just saw that I had to post:

The only Rockets over 50% shooting: Carl Landry and Brent Barry.
I hope you guys play better in game 6, always liked the Rockets’ way of doing things. Game 6 should be a lot closer, at the very least.
I mean, starting lineup scoring: 6 points on 6 shots, 5 points on 7 shots, 9 points on 15 shots. 12 points in 10 shots and 14 in 12 is … slightly better.
Sometimes the ball just doesn’t want to go in the hole.
[And maybe the Lakers were on fire offensively too? I didn’t watch.]
