It’s proven that 2002 against the Kings was fixed. What they should do is strip the Lakers of the ‘02 title, and make the Kings and Nets co-champions of 2002 since they didn’t get to play in the Finals.

it wasn't rigged dawg

by laker on May 18, 2009 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Dude

It’s not b.s.. How can you idiot Laker fans still say it wasn’t rigged? It’s been proven in the news. But it’s your team. Of course you won’t admit it. I saw tons of shit that the Lakers got away with. Mainly, how the fuck did Bibby’s chin foul Kobe’s elbow? that’s just one of the many lousy calls made by the refs.

by Golden Boy on May 18, 2009 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't blame the officiating, when you can't win

Fans of losing teams often blame the officials. For ex. Blazers fans say that Stern wants to impress all the Chinese people which is why the Rockets won. Rockets fans say that Stern wants to get everyone to buy into LA-Cleveland finals. Nevermind that those two are heavily favored since they were head and shoulders above everyone in the regular season, they must be “favored by Stern”. Of course the media is going to sprout controversy, don’t you know that Golden boy? Or are you so naive that you think everything they print is true.

That’s something losing teams’ fans will always do – blame the refs. It’s really pathetic. You’ll save your Warriors’ fans a lot of disgrace if when you do lose, you lose like a man.

by laker on May 18, 2009 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Adelman has – throughout this series – outcoached Jackson. He’s a great coach, but Rockets fans just get pissed that he favors his starters (for good reason) and doesn’t waste his time outs after every opposition run.

my issue is with his in game personnel decisions. in all honesty I partially blame Yao getting hurt on him. Yao could not do anything in that game and should not have been playing. Our smaller and faster guys were playing well against the lakers in that game but Scola and Yao still played a massive amount of minutes…that to me SUX

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

well that's debatable...

just kidding, but i’m sorry in game 2 when our bench team was actually catching up to the lakers sleepy thinks that that was the best moment to put our starters back in………decide for yourself i guess

well Adelman has had his lapses

but the 2nd unit is known to give up leads as much as gaining them. He knows what he’s doing, because keeping the 2nd unit in for a long time is usually detrimental in the long run.

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Adelman has done a great job

What with their defensive stopper (Mutombo) out, and their best player (Yao) out.

And – it’s not just any player – it’s Yao – meaning you can’t just plug and play a new guy in – it literally changes the ENTIRE offense and defense.

So, again – I’ll go with the coach on that one. I’m pretty sure he understands how to make adjustments in the playoffs, considering the players we have out.

Chuck Hayes was in foul trouble. Was Von Wafer going to guard Pow Gasow?

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Look – I’m no Brian Cook fan, and I’m not saying Adelman is perfect. I just know that Von Wafer is not a good defender and depending on the matchups, you can’t always put a guy in who’s a defensive liability. If Rick Adelman has a gut feeling and wants to go with a certain set of players, it’s totally fine to criticize it, but he knows the team better than anyone here.

I’ve criticized Adelman a lot – I didn’t like the hire in the first place, but he’s gotten the team this far and him not putting Von Wafer in the game isn’t going to make or break a series against the Lakers.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:01 PM CDT up reply actions

i would disagree with that

putting wafer and landry in games where your obvious weakness is scoring can lose you the games. The defense can only do so much. They are obviously scoring regardless, so the only way to win is to score yourself. So if you keep your offensive weapons on the bench you’re not going to win.

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

So you just think Wafer should start then, right?

I mean, he’s so fantastic on offense and it’s our biggest weakness, just put him in there to start?

I think you think Von Wafer is way better than he actually. Sure he’s a decent bench player, but he’s VERY streaky, and he also dominates the ball – he doesn’t pass, like ever.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

no I don't think wafer should start

at least not with the players we have right now, but as i have said, when a second unit is actually winning the game, you don’t take them out. And in actuality go back and watch the games, b/c in quite a few of those where ppl complained Yao didn’t get the ball enough, it was actually wafer who was the only one passing it in to him.

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

The second unit wasn’t winning the game, though. They were making a run. You make it sound like they put up a twenty point lead on LA. The second unit is the second unit for a reason – and they get tired just like anyone else.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

you're right sorry

It was only 14 points they scored more than the lakers in the second quarter

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Right, and 14 points in the second quarter isn’t “winning the game.” It’s just going on a run. So they just should have stayed in and finished the game? I don’t understand.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions

well...

hmmm they put up 14 more points and you take them out and start losing again, then you put them back in they catch up some again and you take them out then they start losing again…really? you don’t see any correlation between the two?

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

It’s a RUN. Basketball games are full of runs. But here you are saying they should have just stayed in the game the rest of the time. That’s like saying the Rockets are better without Yao because they won a couple of games in this series.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

omg

I said absolutely nothing about Yao, i would never agree with that. I’m just going to point out one thing. The lakers are getting all the points they want right now. The rockets D does not matter obviously. wafer 8 points 8 mins, scola 9 points 32 mins, ARTEST 8 points 35 mins, and pretty bad D right now. If you are going to make the argument that Wafer should be sitting now too then there will never be anything to convince you otherwise. whenever i’ve shown you obvious examples you’ve just either said oh I trust adleman because he has won so and so many games or you’ve said i’m saying somehing about yao(pointing out history really doesn’t refute the point and likening me to somehting else is called spin not refuting the point either. btw this team is obviously not better without him, but they do match up with the Lakers better without him esp when their center doesn’t show up). I will not agree that adleman has made good in-game decisions and I feel that you are getting upset so I’m just going to stop talking about it now.

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 4:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not upset at all

You’re the one who’s ranting.

All I said about Yao was that saying we’re better without him is the SAME logic as saying Wafer and the entire second unit should finish the game just because they went on a great run.

Take a breath, man.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, I’ve refuted your points many, many times. To do so again would just be repeating myself.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

again

saying that rick has won so many games or likening the argument to the Yao argument isn’t refuting the point.

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes – but me saying over and over again that it was just a run in a basketball game – and that they’re a second unit for a reason – and that they need rest just like the first unit after they are in the game is.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

i'm not ranting but ok...

I said i FEEL you’re getting upset not saying you are or telling you to take a breath in a rude way basically picking a fight. In fact what i was doing was the opposite. because that argument is either completely intellectually dishonest or you’re just getting emotional. I said simply the matchup during that game should have been played differently(and in general against the lakers, i’ve said that various times and you haven’t truly addressed it) which is nothing like saying that the rockets are a better team without Yao…so that’s not a very real argument, either you haven’t payed attention to what i’ve said at all(which points to someone acting emotionally so that’s why i felt that way) or you’re being intellecutally dishonest

by cougarRoxFan on May 17, 2009 4:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Dude, nobody’s emotional at all. Well, I’m not. I’m not intellectually dishonest, either. I just disagree with you. Don’t over-complicate it – we just don’t see eye to eye. Why does it have to turn into a blood vendetta?

If you think me telling you to take a breath is rude, you must not have been on a lot of internet message boards. At some point you just start repeating the same stuff and if I’ve already refuted it in a way I’m satisfied with, I’m done with it.

No need to resort to internet fisticuffs.

by HoustonDiehards on May 17, 2009 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Brian Cook was obviously a gamble

and it didn’t pay off in game 5 but it did work out for a little while in game 4. I give him credit for at least attempting to find some offensive spark. If you want bad adjustments, look no further than Phil Jackson this series.
Luke Walton and Derek Fisher have been atrocious.

Pau is camping out in the lane. ABZ was counting down the clock, and from the 19 second mark, Pau never left the painted area. I thought it was a 3-second rule, not a 30 second rule.

I hope this game will finally shut up the people

who STILL think we are better withOUT Yao.

Whether or not we can take back this game, I’m proud of how our team has played throughout these playoffs, and we went so much further than anyone outside Houston anticipated. Good stuff guys, we are going to be WCF contenders for years to come, and hopefully Morey will realize it was only through team chemistry that got us this far, and he will keep this great team intact. Hopefully the Rockets will win the 2nd half and go out strong regardless of the result.

I don't know if I can watch the second half.

I don’t see a comeback happening this morning. The Lakers are playing great defense and the Rockets are shooting horribly, just horribly. Each possession is stand around, panic, turnover and/or force up a terrible contested shot. THANKS RICK ADLEMAN, REALLY ACTIVE COACHING JOB.

Of course it doesn’t help that Pau is doing whatever he wants thanks to the fact that the Rockets are giving up an accumulative 12 feet in height disadvantage. The part that makes me the most angry is you know the Lakers think they are playing really well. While this is partly true, they’re also playing essentially a bench team, especially with Battier in foul trouble and the Rockets are playing awful.

It seems to have been the trend. The Lakers win a series, the media ignores the fact they’ve only been playing an average of 70% of a whole team.

The Thuggets will destroy the Lakers. They will play more physical, more pestering and shoot far better than the Rockets have in this series. I’m looking forward to seeing the Birdman annoy the hell out of them. So after this series and we all move our wagons to pickaxeandroll, I think we’ll finally be able to celebrate.

Life is hilarious.

yeah

people like to say that the true center is dying (and, to some degree, new offenses are incorporating more european-style centers these days. But Yao’s got that type of game, and he’s obviously a true center, right?), but the truth is that there are plenty of “true centers” in the league today. It’s just that the previous generation (Hakeem, Ewing, Shaq, Deke, ’zo, Robinson, etc.) was absolutely stacked with ultra-talented big-men. There are only two who could be described as “dominant” today.

by Only_A_Lad on May 17, 2009 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

I partially blame it

on the NBA’s marketing which is becoming more and more geared towards Guards and Forwards. I mean when’s the last time we had a post type center on the cover of NBA Live?

You may have a point.

But in past years Carmelo Anthony, T-MAC, and ARENAS have all gotten on the cover of NBA Live… Arenas didn’t even PLAY. Big guys see that and say “aw fuck man lets go practice threes.”

Plus, you know... it's a video game

So they’re going to gravitate to the more exciting-type players, and flying dunks and speed will always be more appealing than big centers. Just reality.

lucky for all of us then

that NBA Live is now become a yearly, poorly developed glitchy game that’s barely even playable, while 2k (which doesn’t encourage the dunking as much) continues to plug along as the reliable franchise. Too bad that ESPN sold it’s soul to EA.

Man, don’t call Duncan a center in San Antonio. He plays the 5 a lot but they always want him to be called a power forward.

I think it is because they don’t want him to have to compete with Yao & a younger Shaq for the starting all-star / all NBA team slots.

Don’t get me wrong the dude is the best power forward of all time that I can think of but he does play a lot of center.

by lazNirv on May 17, 2009 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Utah may take that

They love Ronnie Brewer, but him and AK47 are not good enough to guard Kobe. They might want Ron to shore up that aspect of their defense and let Milsap take Boozer’s place.

However, based on this series, I’d say Artest’s time as a Kobe-stopper is long over with. Kobe routinely took him off the dribble or beat him in post up situations whenever matched up against Artest. Battier was BY FAR the better defender, and I have goosebumps over what Kobe is going to do against Denver, who doesn’t have a single person who can match Battier, or even Artest, on defense.

We thank the Houston Rockets

For giving the Lakers a competitive series, something no one last year could give them. We thank them for showing the Lakers what true heart really is (in Games 4 & 6) and how to deal with intense home crowds (Game 6).

While I picked the Lakers in 6, I did so with the expectation of Yao Ming playing the full series. The fact that Houston was able to continue the series for another 2 games w/o Yao is a testament to their hard work, great fans, and teamwork.

This series has given the Lakers many things to be happy about. While they were completely blown out in Game 4, I attribute it to a emotionally charged home team who had just lost it’s superstar and lone chance at the championship. Game 6 also showed the Lakers that still, even with the initial shock of Yao going down and a 40 point loss on their heads from Game 5, the Rockets still were interested in protecting their manhood.

This series has also allowed several Lakers to find their games again. Bynum, Farmar, Vujacic… w/o them, the Lakers are not as formidable against the Cavaliers.

From the beginning of the series, I’ve felt the winner would go through to capture the NBA Championship. Both teams have excellent wing defenders and a strong post presence, something you need to defeat Cleveland. However, with out Yao, Houston’s chances would have been slim, and atleast by their own loss, we might be saved a sweep in the Finals by the Lebrons over the Melos.

Great series, see you guys next year! (Unless you have to play the Jazz ;) j/k )

by Only_A_Lad on May 17, 2009 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

the NBA is headed that way

Brooks opened my eyes on how to play the NBA nowadays. You need fast, ULTRA fast, PGs to take advantage of hand-checking rules. The fact that Phil Jackson’s teams are still successful is merely due to the level of talent. PJ loves big guards and big lineups, and I don’t see it lasting for much longer.

Morey is a genius. I’d take him over Kupchak any day.

by tandur on May 17, 2009 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions

the hand-checking rules have totally changed the way defenses and offenses are run these days. I think this series has really shown how damaging guys like Brooks, Lowry, Barbosa, etc. can be.

I don't have any stats

But whose defense is better: the Rockets in this series, or Cleveland’s? It seems unlikely that we’ll face any defense this intense again.

by Snoopy2006 on May 17, 2009 5:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll take Houston's

if we’re talking in terms of who’s better to face the Lakers. Houston’s defense reminded me at times of Boston’s, with it’s complete team effort and sagging defense in the lane. Their rotations were excellent. These are things Cleveland does as well, but one of the differences is post defense. Boston (b4 KG’s injury) and Houston (b4 Yao’s injury) both played great post defense, especially on dribble penetration. Cleveland does not. This is why the Lakers were able to plaster the Cavs twice this season, and it had nothing to do with Kobe. It had everything to do with Bynum (for one game, altho Big Z was out), Odom (Bynum was out in this game), and Gasol.

by tandur on May 17, 2009 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, BG just gets like that sometimes.

The main problem is that the Celtics as a whole were getting torched for 100+ points a game against the Bulls as a whole, whose offensive schemes are atrocious. A lot of easy layups and Rose going off for 34 and 11 in Game 1? That would not have happened.
They lost Game 7 against Orlando anyways, though. Haha. :P

Three things you must know:
-"Ben Gordon is a bundle of muscle and clutch. That's all he's made of. Drink BG7 energy drink, you'll grow a pair of balls on your balls."
-Pau Gasol: The defense of a seven foot ladder paired with the post presence of Manute Bol.
-Joakim Noah is better than you.

I imagine Houston would love to keep him, he’s a JR Smith for Houston. However, is he worth 4-5 million (Shane Battier money)? Most likely not. But someone other than Houston will pay him that and try to make him into a starter. Most likely someone like Golden State or Sacramento.

by tandur on May 17, 2009 5:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup I would rather Morey take the same approach

with Von as he did with Landry. Why bid against yourself is there may be no market? Just match a reasonable offer, because a player like Von can always be replaced with relative ease. I don’t believe Von is on the same level as JR, I mean JR can stroke it from 27 feet when he’s hot. Wafer will be smart to ask for 3million a year at most.

Congratulations on a great series and season Rockets!!!

I’m a Laker fan and I have to admit that I’m a bit tired of Artest & Brooks & Scola, etc. But I think that is probably a complement to how hard and well you’re guys played.

Most Rockets fans on here seem to have a goodnatured sense of humor. Hope there’s not too much of a Laker hate aftertaste.

One of the the funniest things about the whole series is that there was a troll on the LA Times blog that posted a ton of messages during the games the Lakers lost ("The Lakers suck., Pau Gasol plays like a girl., The Lakers are gonna lose, etc.)

Then when I looked over the Houston Chronicle blog after a Houston loss there was a “Laker fan” posting the exact mirror images of those messages. (Yao can’t move . . .. Scola will never . . .etc.) I figure it is the same guy who just enjoys posting messages for whoever is losing.

Lastly, I hope that the Denver blog is ready for all the Laker haters who will be joining soon.

Good luck next year.

by lazNirv on May 17, 2009 6:32 PM CDT reply actions

Personally, I'm not rooting for the Nuggets in this series

I just don’t care. The Lakers are the Lakers, and the Nuggets are a bunch of tatted-up fake tough-guys. Neither of them are teams that I find easy to root for. That said, I can’t say I HATE either team like I openly hate the Jazz and Spurs.

I guess, really what it boils down to is that I’m a Rockets fan, but not a huge NBA fan, whereas with the NFL I’m a huge fan of both the Texans and the league as a whole. I just don’t pay much attention to any other NBA teams.
