End-of-Season Press Conferences
I saw this posted over at ClutchFans, and it's some interesting stuff. Daryl Morey, Les Alexander, and Yao answered questions yesterday. Some highlights:
- Morey and Les both say that McGrady's rehab is going very well. Alexander says that Tracy's working very hard, which is certainly a good sign.
- Les also says that Yao is "untouchable." (This really pissed off a bunch of posters at CF)
- The Rockets are willing to go over the salary cap if a great player is available.
- Morey thinks he'll be able to get a pick between the 20th and 44th spot in the draft, but that obviously depends on many different factors.
- He also thinks that James White could provide the same sort of value as a draft pick, and White would go in the first round this year if he were eligible.
- This is an exciting summer for Yao, since it will be the first time he won't have any Chinese National Team commitments. (As an aside, I saw this posted over at BDL. The Chinese have a few "mini-Yaos" who might be able to take the big guy's place.)
- Yao will be in Houston for a few more weeks for medical exams before he returns to China. He'll be back here sometime in June for another foot exam.
- According to Les, Yao's minutes will probably be reduced next season. Yao seems less than happy about that.
No cursing in title. No pirated material, such as links to online game streams. Thanks.

Of course fans would be upset at giving Yao the max
they don’t care about the business aspect of the game. It would be great if Yao would be willing to take a discount. Maybe if Artest does it, then Yao would take example to that and McGrady as well. We’ll see.

I'm hoping more for a favorable structure than a discount
Like player or club or mutal options in the years after he’s 34 of 35

this is funny
“Morey and Les both say that McGrady’s rehab is going very well. Alexander says that Tracy’s working very hard, which is certainly a good sign.”
I understand why they have to say this, but telling the truth would be more fun. Example: “Tracy’s knee is just wrecked but we need him to suck it up and play a few games early in the season so we can trade him. Maybe if he worked as hard at rehab as he does at pimping up his cars we’d have something to work with here… the only real good sign is that a year from now I’ll never have to say his name again.”

Tracy McGrady:
“The media in Houston is tougher on me than on Roger Clemens.”
Pretty sure he’s referring to you, Dave.

Maybe he doesn't
understand that we’re not paying Roger Clemens upwards of $20M to play.

and...
at least Clemens had the decency to roid up to stay healthy!

Clemens always delivered the goods here.
That’s one difference. And Tracy, if a little HGH or a fertility drug will get your knee healthy, then go get a shot.
"So do you keep open 3pt FG percentage?"
"Yeah, we'd have everything you'd want, Bill."
"I hate you."

pay no attention to dave
he’s unable to accept mcgrady for what he is. Unable to see McGrady’s failures as tragic but beautiful, so he gets pissed off and wishes we had Kobe.
No, you’re not the only one left. There’s like three of us here.

We had a chance to get Kobe for T-Mac. We passed. This saddens me.
You’ll never again see the T-Mac of 2004. Once you accept that, life is much easier.

I don't think anybody's said anything about the McGrady of 2004 making a reappearance.
We’re just looking for a McGrady who can get to the rim slightly more often than last year, and one whose jumpshots no longer look like Carlos Lee line drives.
The simple fact is that when McGrady was on the floor this season, the Rockets were a good team. And, if his knee isn’t killing him, I think the Rockets will be a great team next season.

And by that I mean “when he was on the floor this season and reasonably healthy.”

+1
mac only played 35 this season and yet still was only a rebound short of a pair of triple doubles. take into account that about 80% of those were played on one leg and i sympathize. i’ve been a vehement supporter of mcgrady.
i went to a lot of games this season, and one thing that irritated me was this guy who had an old mcgrady jersey, drew a 3 next to the 1 in sharpie and scratched out mcgrady and scribbled in ‘wafer’. aside from the fact that real fans don’t flagrantly disrespect players on the team (save it for when they’re gone), it was just pathetic looking. go buy the jersey, or get it made. i have a mcgrady jersey and a wafer jersey.
had to get that off my chest.
Wafer . . . again. (Marv Albert, HOU v. CLE Feb 2009)
