lack of intent
the lack of intent justifies an obvious lack of a loose ball foul call?
is someone really trying to justify fouls as being intentional only?
hell, if that’s the case, Yao could shoot free throws to play catch-up and win this series alone.

by misterterrific on May 4, 2009 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions
what I'm saying
is that they thrive at a fast pace. It’s why they play the way they do. Nene, Martin, Melo, etc. are all great running players. Houston would force them into cement-galoshes pace.
draft dejuan blair
admittedly
i haven’t seen much of the nuggs as i’ve wanted to. and the Hornets series can’t be a good situation i can use to generalize how good their team can be in the halfcourt, but from the few games i’ve seen and the reading i’ve done, they’re pretty formidable in the half court too. Although the regular season pace would suggest that they are a running team, so you got me there.

Script says "LA is the bestest ever!"
And they did beat us 4 times in the regular season. If they stray away from the regular season script, what would they talk about? The game itself? Surely you jest.
Because the Rockets have yet to win the series
The Rockets are the underdog. If the Rockets win the series, we’ll be talked up to Denver (whom I think will win their series). Denver will be the “underdog” because of their age and experience in the playoffs.
Then if Houston actually gets to Cleveland in the finals, we’ll be the underdog again.
Underdogs get no respect. See Mario Elie & the Kiss of Death™.
Rockets played a good half. They could play better..
I hope Brooks can get at least one assist rest of the game..
ya know...
It would be really nice if the Rockets could one day learn how to properly close out a quarter instead of letting the other team quickly get back in the game.
and when did ABZ forget how to shoot FTs?
You guys
closed them out against us…

not really
You missing shots alone isn’t closing it out.
We tend to stop scoring inside two minutes.
No way!
a couple of times your boys shut us down AND scored points! Give your boys some well deserved credit. They didn’t do it every quarter but you guys had some good ones for sure.

I still don’t have much confidence in our 4th quarter closing abilities on the road without T-Mac, so we need to get a big cushion.

I love you Kenny Smith...
You shot your 7 3 pointers in the game against the Magic in Game 1 of the Finals back in 1996. You left your mark here in Houston.
But you seriously do not have any business being on that touch screen doing commentary. Just keep barking back at Chuck and mocking him for not having a ring, which he came to Houston for.
Ok, I’m too rough on Chuck. Chuck deserved a ring. But Kenny just doesn’t need to be on that screen.
well the way you hold the L*kers score down is a solid D.
Using most of the shot clock also keeps the possessions down in turn keeping the score down.
L*ker fans just getting to Staples....
2nd half will be a little louder.

We do, but most of us here could generate a pretty accurate home crew transcript.
Without listening to them.
The Blazer games/announcers are pretty much the same way
I love our homer announcers, but I’d love to listen to Clyde for a game, too.

I don't how, but the Lakers outrebounded the Rockets in the 1st half
Something the Blazers never did or had trouble matching the entire series. If the Rockets shore up their rebounding, I think they’ll win. The defense is looking stout.
Life is not by chance. Basketball is life.
I just realized this.
:(
Though I still have 10x more :( for the fact that Calvin Murphy isn’t doing color commentating.
I used to love him when he’d turn around from the press seats and tell the opposing fans that they sucked.
what's the deal with Murph?
is he on the clear now?
things to improve
Wafer needs to realize that Vujacic is going to be up in his grill. Take his ass directly to the rim. Do not pass “Go”. Collect $2M contract though.
Brent Barry needs to shoot or stay off the floor. None of this delayed passing shit that causes turnovers.
ABZ needs to be aggressive. He’s slightly timid. And he’s missing FTs. Not good.
Crazy Pills needs to stay a bit crazy.
Yao needs to learn how to box out.
I love Yao, but the next guy he seals off will be the first.
You guys taking BOS or ORL?
I’m going with ORL.

Orlando.
Orlando beats Boston.
Cleveland beats Orlando.
Houston beats Cleveland.
T-Mac comes back in late January. Adleman works him into the rotation.
Houston loses in the 1st round.
Morey trades McGrady for Durant and a 1st round draft pick.
Houston wins the next 7 NBA finals.
...
I just really want Durant out of OKC. He is so much better than that team.
Properly built up he could be the next T-Mac / Kobe / James.
But the poor guy is stuck in OKC because of contracts and money. It’s actually kind of sad.
I don’t think anyone is going to have a problem if OKC wins the lottery.

After watching them struggle with the Bulls
Orlando in 6.
Without KG, the Celtics aren’t even a mediocre defensive team. Ben Salmons/ John Gordon absolutely torched them, and Orlando’s shooters will enjoy similar runs. Howard is just going to eat Baby alive.
"Hip-Thrust!" - Hard Gay
In case you're wondering, Hard Gay is married.
That’s what I’m thinking. Celtics are simply not the same team without KG. They barely escaped a series with maybe the worst playoff team. Bulls have a great young core of talent; however, they simply are too inexperienced and have too many holes in the roster.

Remember Game 1 of that Series
With Yao/Franchise v. KB24/Saquille in the 1st rd? We lost bc Franchise missed a 3 at the end of the game. Shame it was.

Go Rockets, sorry im late
Just woke up, I got ya’lls back on this one (I’m actually Mavericks fan) but If there’s anyone I want to see take those asshat Lakers down, its ya’ll (since we got our own problem) repping it in the name of Texas.
omg...the Rockets took tiny without Yao in there.

The class of the LA fans cheering for Yao when he came back out of the tunnell is impressive. I don’t know if I could say that the same thing would happen in Houston if say, the same thing were to happen to a laker player. Kudos LA.
I'm keeping an eye on the game thread for the Lakers blog

+ the Lakers give up more easily than the Blazers.
Beat LA!
I did too
Heard a lot of hopelessness here, but the Blazers and Lakers play similar enough games, and I knew after how well the Rockets played the Blazers they’d have a decent shot.
I know.
I feel like we were the sparring partner who trained you for the big meet.
KO them like Manny in the 2nd.
Roy had flu against you guys too.
But Roy plays just as well as usual through stuff like that so it is no excuse.
Brooks doesnt have to make baskets
He’s not even supposed to, but he’s doing a hell of a job screwing with the Lakers zone D when he starts running through em like a mad man. Pulls 3 players out of position

is the reason- he went 1-11 once; Ron missed one game; and the other was right after the PG trade; and the last time was fair and square, so LA is really just 1-0 against the current Rox squad.
As much as I am rooting against the Lakers
I am rooting more for the Rockets. Love that hard nose defense. I also want to believe the Blazers aren’t as bad as the Rockets made them look.
Life is not by chance. Basketball is life.
Blazers didn't look that bad
They looked like a young team with a slightly above average PG and an extremely inexperienced bench. They’ll run the NBA if they get a top notch PG

Mavs Moneyball crew salutes you
Now we need to get our shit together tommorrow night, I dont know about ya’ll but I hope for a “Texas-sized” finals if ya know what I mean
You know L.A. is going to come out strong next game.
If Houston could snag one more in L.A. it would be huge. But friggin big win tonight guys.
Cue Phil whining about the foul deficiency.
Remember that the true foul difference was nearly 50/50 UNTIL the Lakers started fouling in desperation in the end of the 4th. At this same time the Rockets were trying hard not to foul because all they had to do was waste time and make freethrows.
Rockets defense absolutely owns the Lakers offense. No Laker with a ‘good’ game. Kobe huge ballhog for the game too.
Yao easily head & shoulders above anyone else out there tonight.
And all of this in LA.
You'll need to play better.
I think HOU can win the series…but the lakers didn’t bring their best game tonight.

keys to the game
1. brooks 3rd quarter was huge, matching kobe shot for shot almost
2. i felt like we got more calls than the lakers, but not by much
3. yao ming being aggressive. he was trying to dunk the ball from everywhere! and coming back to play in the 4th, that was awesome.
4. for some reason, i liked it when he played brooks and lowry together. usually only does that to close out the games, but he put em in at about 7 minutes left in the 4th. maybe because we were turning the ball over so much.
things i didnt like:
1. brooks in the 1st half, hesitating on wide open shots. and barry did it too a lil bit.
2. von wafer, letting sasha get in his head. he played very tight and didnt do much (-9)
3. turnovers. and they need to work on not getting stuck in traps at the end of the game. almost gave it up!
I loved our fight tonight
Every time the Lakers made a run, we came right back. The Lakers led 3 times tonight, but only ever by one point. That’s because every time the Lakers took the lead, we came right back with a run.
Time to galvanize
the series
is not over.
don’t celebrate just yet. the lakers are going to come hard in game two.
but, for the time being…kobe, slob on yao’s knob.

they're still going to have to step it up
for when kobe is playing 100%
I know
we’re not going to get Kobe to shoot 14-31 and 1-7 from behind the arc every night. Either way a win is a win. I feel so much better about this series after this win.
Yao, Artest and Brooks had huge games. I noticed Brooks went into his little dribble-fest but actually converted numerous times, so we’ll let it slide. Also Chuck should’ve played a little bit more. I know it was a close game but he’s so good on the glass offensive and defensive (he also gets pity points when matched up against Gasol or Bynum). Yao playing 40 minutes really worries me, especially after that scare. We really need to get a traditional back-up center.
Not to mention, a quiet but still efficient night for Scola and everyone minus Wafer off the bench. .
Pretty rough night for the entire lakers team. You know it’s really bad when Jordan Farmar leads your team with +4. Also props to Kobe for not using his “flu” as an excuse for an off night. Yet they manage to keep the game so close all the way into the 4th quarter, which is also a little worrisome.
