Bill Plaschke: Yao was faking it
Went looking for this after Michael Wilbon called Plaschke out for this comment on PTI:
"Moments later, after stretching his knee against a wall, Yao ran back onto the court and scored eight points in the final four minutes.
OK, so there was no evidence he was faking it, but still, it felt like Paul Pierce, Part II."
When they showed the replay last night, I knew it wasn't anything serious, but a bruised knee HURTS. Plaschke's an asshole.
[Note: How can anyone take Plaschke seriously when his prime goal as a sportswriter is to draw attention to himself rather than assess the actual game? It's okay to make bold assertions in my book, but that's just ignorant. Remember, Bill, Kobe Bryant knocked out Andrew Bynum for three months with his knee. I don't think Yao took any less of a hit. Man up and write about what matters. -- Tom]

Not even close to Paul Pierce.
I don’t remember seeing anybody carrying Yao off the court. The trainers were probably being overly cautious.

Yeah. Yao faking it?
That’s when you know that they’ve gone off the deep end.
And was Paul Pierce really faking it? I have a feeling people get hurt in games and normally it would be good to rest and check it. But then there are times when the player decides it is more worth it to play through – like in the playoffs.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a basketball game won by faking injuries anyway.

Maybe my objectivity is lacking here but I thought Paul Pierce faked that injury. From the initial reaction to getting carried off to a wheelchair no less… I just found it mind-boggling to see how he can jog right back a few minutes later.

did he fake getting stabbed too?
cause he came back months later from his death bed to play an 82 game season. he overreacted with the wheel chair thing, no question, but the training staff supposedly made him do it

Two entirely different matters. If the question is within the context of the NBA then yes I do think he faked the injury to some extent. I don’t see how saying that you can make the leap to a life or death situation.

yea
the Pierce thing wouldnt have been so bad if they didnt have 4 guys carry him off the floor. at one point I thought they were just gonna put him in a body bag and announce over tha PA “Ladies and Gentlemen, Paul Pierce is dead.”
You're not foolin me Kerry Collins.

I'll do my best FJM impression...
and just call Plaschke a douce

well regardless of the severity of the injuries
Pierce came back on his own floor, while Yao came back on another team’s floor. Except for the handful of semi-neutral Laker fans near the exits who applauded Yao’s return, no one really threw a parade for him.
Just another Lakers writer trying to take away from Yao’s achievement in the 4th quarter.

Most people don’t associate Laker fans with him. The guy’s a total moron.

Take it from an LA native...............
Plaschke is a jackass. He writes for the LA times and essentially anything he writes is sensationalist journalism. I don’t really know or care if he’s on TV. I read him every day and that’s more than enough to know that the guy is a “personality” and not an actual journalist. He and several other writers who work for the times are jokes. And then they wonder why the american newspaper industry is going the way of the Dodo?
Yao “faking” an injury is a total non-issue. Yao’s injury didn’t have my beloved Lakers looking lost on defense or force us to jack up 3’s like we were a high school team without a coaching staff. We got thumped and that’s it. There’s your story.
Respect Houston.

I've bumped knees at the gym at the Y.
It freaking hurts. If you’re lucky, it’s just a bruise and you are ok once the pain subsides. Or you’re Andrew Bynum and miss 1/2 the season.
So yeah, an obvious ploy to belittle something that was tough and gritty, but bad for his team. Oh well.

Plash
Is a dumbass, but he didn’t say Yao was faking it. He just said it was a watered down PP impression, which I wrote here last night. Of course, everyone knows Yao was in pain, would never leave the game even for a second unless he thought he needed to or Keith made him, and given his history, it was prudent to go to the locker room. But I think Yao just had a stinger, and once he realized that, he tried to get back in the game ASAP. I love that man (heterosexually).

Wonder if Plash-douche also thought Shane’s crimson mask was fake too. What did he have a blood pack or did he hide the razor in his hand like a WWE match?
Asshole. And to think this guy shames everybody else on ATH. I shame you, cock-gobbler.

Ironic
Plaschke writes about Yao faking an injury. His audience is primarily the city of Los Angeles, a town not known for honest to goodness, salt of the earth, hardworking, to thine own self be true people. Fake tans, wanna be actors (waiters), fake boobs, plastic surgery, etc…Something tells me LA folk appreciate a good acting job more than most. Too bad Yao was for real.

Please, do generalize more …

Eh, I feel it's a pretty fair generalization
by HighLeveragePerformer on May 5, 2009 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Of course you do
But generalizing a city with a population of 9,862,049 is probably too broad. Probably.

True we are...
But we’re not all one form of weird. There’s East LA with their own form of weirdness, downtown LA has their own, and then the surrounding cities all have their unique form of weirdness.
by hertagnism on May 6, 2009 12:40 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've spent a lot of time in LA
And to generalize, there’s less middle ground. The nice people are REALLY nice, the shitty people are REALLY shitty.
The town is known for an industry where there are literally hundreds of thousands of people, many of them extremely talented, vying for about 2000 spots at the big table. And even if you get the spot, those hundreds of thousands just keep coming, to take your spot. Not because they hate you, but because that’s the only way their lifelong dream can come true. This tends to cause extreme behavior. And moreover, it causes lots of stereotypes about the people in our 2nd biggest town.
But here’s the thing. Most of LA is not really involved in that business. They know about it, and know someone in it, sure, otherwise it’d be like living in Houston and not knowing anyone in the oil business. Most Angelenos live in a strange but interesting town with a great climate and tons of stuff to do. They are a bit spoiled as basketball fans, but more or less permanent success can do that to you.
Most of our LA posters have been pretty nice, with a few outright trolls mixed in. Meh.

Much like it's stupid to characterize Texans or Houstonians as one way
It is equally stupid to do so Los Angelenos.
There are good people everywhere and bad people everywhere.

See
I can believe you when say that you’ve spent alot of time in LA. Your viewpoint is one that a reasonable person would come to after having spent time in LA. I’m not sure I agree about the middle ground thing overall but it’s certainly true in certain industries and certain areas in LA.

So
all Texans ride a horse to work, keep a shotgun handy at all times, have giant handlebar mustaches that are slicked with the oil that they drill out of their neighbor’s yard, have fake boobs (hey, we have something in common!) and eat steak for every meal, right? Right!?!?!? Silly Texans, you’d think with all the oil yall have down there you’d have stop riding horses a while back.

The LA Times
has two seriously cancerous sportswriters: Plaschke and T.J. Simers. They’re the sportswriter equivalent of AM talk radio. No sports fan takes them seriously, so they have to talk shit about people to get page hits. They’re doing this more than ever, probably since blogs such as this are sucking away their readership.
If you see a link to their articles don’t click it. If everyone does that hopefully they could be ignored into retirement.

One time on Around the Horn, Plaschke said Lebron was going to get a triple triple....
Reali was speechless… he obviously gave Plaschke the mute button. Only Skip Bayless is more of an idiot than this guy. And that’s sayin something!!!!!

I gained a lot more respect for Yao after that episode.
I think the trainers were just being overly if not rightly cautious. It is the playoffs and the last thing you want is to loose Yao in the first game, which you have in your hands by the way.
Better safe than sorry I say.
Props to the Rockets and Yao. I’d love to see you guys take game 2 as well.
