Rockets/Lakers... oh, no. Not again.
Oh, crap. I guess this is what I get for complaining about Joey Crawford.
Say hello to your lead referee for Game 3 tonight:
I'd write more and express my true feelings about this assignment, but Javie would "T" me up and let the Lakers shoot free throws. We can't have that.

It doesn’t really, I was just wondering because I’m used to it from BloodyElbow (SBN’s MMA Blog) where I had been a member for so long without even knowing it was a whole network of sports blogs. Sometimes I’ll be skimming through an old post and its easy to spot the rec’d ones which are usually good reads or funny. It’d be neat if they turned red here instead of green. Thanks though.

Javie from a Laker fan perspective
Funny you should say that, I guess both sides fans are in agony over Javie! The worst ref in the league today! Learn something new every day…
Don't you people listen to Stern?
There’s no problems with NBA referees! There was just one bad apple. Everything else is JUST FINE AND PERFECTLY HONEST. And also I hired Crawford to babysit for me so I know he’s a great guy! And well-hung, too!
=O
Look upon my 62% faceoff win rate, ye mortals, and despair!
I don't have a problem with him
maybe that makes me a minority, but there isn’t one game this season for the Rockets that I remember being upset with Javie.
There are many many others that would have been much much worse.
javies crazy, one time back in the day he taunted rasheed wallace in the parking lot

if brandon roy played for toronto he'd be brandon waaaaah
Wrong Focus
Why focus on the refs?
I would focus on the opponent players.
If you keep on focusing on the refs, you will get screwed.
PLAY BALL! Just let the refs to their job! Give it a rest already!
What we focus on has nothing to do with what the players focus on
I don’t actually play ball on the Houston Rockets.

How old are you? What do you do for a living? Why do you act like you’re the reincarnation of Confucius? Why do you focus so much on how wrong we all are for the way we think? This is 2 days in a row now that you’ve taken this position as the all knowing philosopher we should all seek for wisdom… Confucius say pahaps it is you who should give it a rest already…. :)

I do agree BTW that the Rox should focus on playing hard and not depend on good officiating...
Having said that, we all have the right and the means to discuss what to expect from terrible officials with obvious agendas.
by 34forDreaming on May 8, 2009 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Are you really 100% SURE that these officials have “obvious agendas”?
I don’t mind people complaining about bad officiating…because they are human. But to claim that they intentionally do harms (i.e. cheat in favor of a team) is not cool. Of course, there have been a few cases of bad apples, but don’t keep assuming that the current officiating groups follow suit.
Anyway, good to hear from you again.
I like you....
We just have very different views of the world.. Perhaps I’m just more cynical by nature, but I’ve watched a lot of basket ball over the years… Very rarely have I ever missed a Rockets game. I also watch many of the TNT and ESPN games… When Crawford and Javie officiate, they always seem to have a bias. Violet just sucks, I don’t think she has an agenda… Tony Brothers has beef with specific players… Salvatore just seems to want to be in the spotlight, Crawford is like this too…
Look, to me good officiating is like porn: you know it when you see it… If that’s good enough for the supreme court, it’s good enough for me… When the calls only seem to go one way, that’s worth complaining about. When refs make weird calls from way accross the court, that’s bad officiating… When refs give teams more credit that deserved at home, that’s bad officiating… It exists… It is something that can be overcome (see the list below). An officials job is not to be entertaining or make the game entertaining. Their job is to make it fair by enforcing the rules on everyone the same way. It is OBVIOUS that some officials have one set of rules for super-stars OR one set of rules for the late minutes of a game OR one set of rules for the playoffs OR one set of rules for big me and then another set of rules for everyone/everything else… It ruins the game for people who love the game more than the players…
Here are some guys who seem to officiate fairly (call it like they see it, don’t call what they don’t see, call it the same on both sides of the court, no matter who’s gym they’re in):
Dick Bavetta
Jim Clark
Dan Crawford

I like you , too.
I guess different perspectives make life more interesting. Otherwise, we’d all be like robots. :)
Let me tell you why it seems unfair sometimes. When officials see plays that are in the “grey” area (calls can be either way), they feel more confident giving the superstars the benefit of the doubt because they are more established players. Whether that is unfair is arguable. Some may say you must treat all players the same, while others may claim that superstars have worked their way up to earn that kind of respect. So, either way, the calls will never make everyone happy.
Anyway, let’s hope we have a good Game 3 where calls won’t be the deciding factor.
Agreed! Let the players determine the outcome!
I hear your point about the Grey area, but I believe they should swallow their wistles unless they actuall see a foul, rather than give the super-stars the benefit of the doubt…
Here’s to a clean game…

Now you’re talking.
I’m so tired of people complaining about the refs. You know, if you play well and shoot and dunk like hell, no ref can stop ya!
These are two somewhat evenly matched teams
With the Lakers being the better team against the league as a whole over the season. What you said is absolutely true against Memphis, but not with Houston vs. LA

A serious question
Rather than focus on which refs you hate to see, can someone give me their dream three refs to officiate a game? For Rockets fans, what would the perfect trio of officials be for tonight’s game?
What about Crawford, Salvatore, and Violet??
Game 1 100-92 Rockets
Game 2 111-98 lakers
Series Tied 1-1
clutch, mini-clutch, and air clutch
if only it would be more fun to watch
People are expecting this game to be called closely.
So, which team benefits from that the most?
It’s hard to say. Couple of issues:
1. Will the Rockets be permitted to play physical defense?
2. If a lot of fouls are being called, the game will slow down; so, will that allow the Rockets play at their preferred pace and grind out a win?
I believe the team that’ll win this game is the team that doesn’t settle for jumpshots.
"I've hacked into your brain. You're throwing a party and no one's showing up."
Close is a two-way factor
As physical as we are on defense, we also play extremely close to our man.
Extremely tight reffing just means Kobe fouls out trying to penetrate on Battier.
A closely called game would be ideal for the Rockets
The Rockets are terrific at playing tough defense without fouling. The Lakers, at the same time, are really just a jump shooting team. The only matchup that worries me would be Yao having to guard Gasol, but I would hope the Rockets would attack him on defense from the onset with pick-and-rolls with Yao and Brooks and some re-posts with Yao.
If we make our free throws
we missed SOOO many free throws! What is our shooting percentage from the stripe in the playoffs and in this series? I could almost guarantee it’s substancially lower than regular season.
by 34forDreaming on May 8, 2009 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions
Right.
A lot of the better defensive teams(Nuggets and Celts, off the top of my head) foul a lot; but the Rockets don’t foul very often at all; only the Spurs foul less frequently.
Statistically, the Lakers aren’t just a jump shooting team. They’re something like 2nd or 3rd in points-in-the-paint per game. Also, they’re a good offensive rebounding team and get a lot of putbacks.
If the refs are going to discourage penetration, then there will be a lot of jumpshots and a lot of long rebounds. So, another key to this game is going to be rebounding.
