We’ve had eight more turnovers and 14 fewer shots taken. We’ve outrebounded them, but careless ball-handling has cost the Rox valuable possessions. To give away six points at the end of the first half in unacceptable. You can’t expect the Lakers to miss so many shots in the second half like they did in the second quarter, so you HAVE to start taking advantage of every possession.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

by ayleein on May 8, 2009 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

This has always been my biggest problem with the Rockets. For as big of hustlers as they are on defense, they are the laziest passers. So many pointless turnovers result from feebly lobbing the ball with one hand in the general direction of a teammate. If we would pass the ball with both fucking hands we’d be winning by 10. And Lowry needs to stop with the 1 on 5s already. They don’t work. Wait till Landry is in the paint.

by Only_A_Lad on May 8, 2009 10:25 PM CDT reply actions

the guy has put his body on the line to get 2 huge offensive boards this quarter

because by the time he tries to set up down low, either brooks or artest have turned it over already.

its like he’s allowing AB/artest the open lane to the basket

by rocketloveinthebigD on May 8, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

true

Yao isn’t moving to the ball. But Artest is dribbling the hell out of the ball, and Brooks isn’t really doing anything.

by Only_A_Lad on May 8, 2009 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

This is what Artest does. This is what Crazy Pills does

by Emeka on May 8, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

You're going to hate me

but that’s where T-Mac and Rafer are missed. Getting Yao the ball was priority #1 always. Can’t say the same about AB and Artest.

by goingforthecorner on May 8, 2009 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Only half hate you

T-Mac’s ability to get the ball to Yao is what’s really missing right now.

Rafer would just take (and miss) horrible threes and tear-drop shots.

ROCKETS

Rockets are very lucky to be down only 10 points. This is just the lakers missing some shots because YOU GUYS should be down by 20 right now

by Emeka on May 8, 2009 10:26 PM CDT reply actions

dude

if we didn’t throw you guys the ball 5 times in the first half we would have went into the half with a 10 point lead.

"Hip-Thrust!" - Hard Gay

In case you're wondering, Hard Gay is married.

by hardgay on May 8, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Are you serious? You guys had 14 more shots in the first half thanks to turnovers. They’re not even forced, either, just stupid passes. This should be a tie game at worst for the Rockets. The offense is sucking right now though.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

by ayleein on May 8, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

wrong. you didnt throw us the ball.. we TOOK IT. TOOK IT

and Kobe blocked Yao twice at the rim to get the ball in transition and put up points

By 12!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Artest take IT!

by Emeka on May 8, 2009 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Cmon its Yao, hes not going to do that

He’s a team-first guy. Even if he knows him demanding the ball is best for the team, he won’t do it.

by goingforthecorner on May 8, 2009 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions

We're being totally outplayed on both ends

the real Lakers have arrived. People didn’t want to admit that Game 1 was a result of them being rusty from a long layoff, but that excuse is looking a little more legit.

by goingforthecorner on May 8, 2009 10:27 PM CDT reply actions

or

it could be that they’re shooting like 50% from three range. When they’re hot, they’re hot, but that’s not typically how the ancillary Lakers players shoot.

by Only_A_Lad on May 8, 2009 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions

2 for 18 in game 1 isnt the real lakers

7 ’6 man has slow legs and quite some bulk. He is getting “out-fasted” (no word like that) to position

by Emeka on May 8, 2009 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions

he was in position at least two instances on that last possession.

the guards took too long. and then Wafer had Yao open under the basket, instead he shoots an airball.

by airchina23 on May 8, 2009 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions

i don't think people realize

you can’t expect a guy of that size to run up and down the floor and fight for post position on every single possession and play more than 20 minutes a game. He can’t afford to do that, especially if his teammates aren’t going to give him the ball.

Artest reminds me of Travis Outlaw

No not their physiques. But they are the ultimate feast of famine guys. When they’re on, they are great, and can totally dominate a game. But when they’re off, they make so many dumb mistakes and lose a game single handedly.

He has got play within himself, in order to give Houston a chance.

by JasonT on May 8, 2009 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

Good analogy, bearing in mind that Artest has the capability of getting to the rack strong whenever he wants and that Travis can elevate over anyone for his jumpers...

But they both love to shoot the ball and sometimes you smile and sometimes you cry…

Debatable if that should have even been Flagrant-1

As a Laker fan, I would have to agree with Kobe and the announcers. Ron’s foul was 50-50 between a hard foul and a Flagrant-1. He should not have been ejected, and I think the league will review the play and downgrade the flagrant.

Comments from the West Coast............

1. Ron-Ron KILLED you guys tonight. 10-23 shooting, 2-8 from 3, 4 TO’s. There’s no way the Rockets can win with Ron taking up so much of the offense and doing nothing with it.

2. That was absolutely, positively NOT a flagrant foul and I think the league will change it as soon as they review it.

3. Short of Rocket fans thinking I’m clowning on their team, when VON FUCKING WAFER is a big part of the offensive output for your squad, you’ve got serious issues. The guy is a decent scorer at best, an offensive black hole and defensive liability at worst.

4. I think it’s definitely starting to look more and more like Game 1 was an aberration and the series is starting to turn in the Lakers favor. Houston is an amazing defensive unit, but they just don’t seem to have the offensive output to make a difference.

Respect, Houston.

stupid foul

hey rockets fan,
HARD CORE laker fan here and let me tell you, that call on Artest is disgusting to say the least. Even though I am not rooting for your team, I believe in being fair. If Rondo doesn’t get suspended or EVEN get a Flag. 2, then Arest should not have been called for one either. Derek Fisher, yes, but Artest, no.

Its just really frustrating because I feel like that call was made out of prejudice. The refs know of Ron-ron’s reputation and history and because of that, just assumed that he was being dirty.

If you are rich enough to own a team, you should try to win. If you rely on it to make you much richer, your team will likely suck.

I mean, if Sterling wants to have a chain of restaurants and be that way, fine, who cares? But sports teams are not the same, or shouldn’t be. Anything that gets the public to finance their building for them owes the public something back, and that something is trying. Of course its our own fault for letting them…

Okay, back to talking basketball.

The Rockets couldn’t take advantage of the early foul trouble of the Lakers in the 2nd quarter and maintain the lead. They played with a lot less intensity in the second half.

The Lakers simply wanted this one more. Another good night from Kobe, but this time we didn’t stop the role players.

by airchina23 on May 9, 2009 12:26 AM CDT reply actions

The point guards are going to have to learn to ball handle better

They haven’t played well the last two games. Lots of overdribbling, deferring to Artest, not getting the ball to Yao.

Bork bork bork!

by Avinash Kunnath on May 9, 2009 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

The thing is...

Every defense has a certain philosophy. The Rockets have an amazing defense, but in this entire series, they’ve keyed in on protecting the paint and playing great help D. There wasn’t a huge shift in defensive philosophy today. Many of the same shots Lamar and Ariza hit were missed in Games 1 and 2. I wonder if Adelman will adjust or not. My guess is unlikely – the Lakers have still stunk it up from 3-point land overall

by Snoopy2006 on May 9, 2009 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

The turnovers killed us too.

Been a problem for us the whole series.

by airchina23 on May 9, 2009 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

We basically got beat with jumpers. It sucks, but I wouldn't rely on it if I was LA.

We also turn the ball over way too much. And I swear to God, I must have seen 10 point blank shots bounce out. Just frustrating.

I think LA had a couple of good plans.

1. Make Houston pay for help D on Kobe. I wouldn’t rely on 3 Lamar Odom 3s, (or 11 overall) but it worked tonight.
2. Left a big man underneath (for many many seconds it seemed but I digress) what that did was admit that LA’s PGs couldn’t stay with Houston’s so there was always help underneath.

One complaint I will make is on interior reffing. I don’t know how Gasol guards Yao for a whole game and gets 1 foul on him. I saw Yao’s shots go straight up on several occasions, and that can’t be right.

The F2 on Artest was bogus. I only saw the Vujatich play on Wafer once, it looked like he lead with his elbow into his head (funny how that happens “accidentally” with him so much). But I didn’t see the replays, so I’m not positive.

Go to the light. Go to the light...

vujacic did nothing.

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 12:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I'll just point out that I did ask.

I know Wafer was trying to draw contact. That’s part of the game. It’s how the contact comes. If that play just happened that way, then fine.

It makes me feel better, because there’s a sense of being jobbed when you see that (and no more replays) and then Artest gets booted on what looked like a F1 at most.

by Xiane on May 9, 2009 12:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Artest’s foul was a good playoff foul. Nothing more, not even a Flagrant 1.

Wafer literally leapt horizontally into Sasha, creating all the contact. Sasha’s hand did come down, but it was a fairly normal basketball motion (he did hit Wafer’s head, but Wafer initiated the contact in the first place, and any intelligent basketball player tries to avoid a 4-point play in that situation).

then in the 4th

kobe d-ed up on ron-ron and showed why he made first team all nba defense (damn him) hah

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions

So far in three games,

I will say that the Rockets defense has very effective in slowing down the Laker’s halfcourt offense. The only mistakes we have made on D are mostly leaving guys like Ariza and Walton open from outside, which is our best option since both are ice cold this series. The problem is that the Lakers force many turnovers and Brooks, Artest, and even Yao are very turnover prone.
Laker fans will obviously not agree with my analysis, but I do believe that we have a good a chance at any to win back a couple of games as long as we coordinate our offense better. Houston’s half court defense is too good to allow 90+ points for the Lakers, we can’t give them free baskets off turnovers. That said we need to adopt the do or die mentality we had in the first series.

they are 2 completely different types of centers.

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Yao is a fantastic athlete.

No one has ever seen a guy that big be that graceful.

Hakeem is a unique player, like Magic or Bird. No one is “like” them,

yup Yao will probably not make it into the HOF

but he will without a doubt go down as the most offensively skilled center after Kareem. Considering his frame and size, it is more than what anyone had hoped for when they drafted him.

More than the Dream? Really?

I get that he’s a better shooter, but the Dream Shake…the most unstoppable offensive move after the skyhook. I can’t put Yao above that.

by Snoopy2006 on May 9, 2009 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions

You may have a point

but Yao has much more range than Hakeem, although he doesn’t use it much.

As Shaq once said about Hakeem:

“He’s got above 5 moves and 4 countermoves, that gives him about 20 different moves. He’s unstoppable.”

Yao’s not in that league. He’s got a couple great moves, but he can’t impose his will on the game the way a transcendent player can.

Yao may have the range but he cant create that shot by himself. Dream could get any shot he wanted, whenever.

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes

Hakeem had a face up game too. It’s impossible for Yao to go past anyone facing their frontside.

I can see the argument for the top 2

but it’s way too generous for me. I’d put him top 5. I can’t really decide between Shaq, Wilt, the Captain, Dream, or Russell.

by hertagnism on May 9, 2009 1:09 AM CDT up reply actions

If we're talking about skilled

its between him and Kareem, and no one else. Besides height, Yao is not as physically blessed as the others. Guys like Shaq and Russel could EXplode off the ground, and Hakeem could go around anyone with his agility.

Top 2: Kareem and Hakeem

Wilt and Russell are too hard to compare, because they played in such a different era. 6-8 teams, breakneck pace, no real other big men (it’d be like playing against Udonis Haslem nightly).

by Snoopy2006 on May 9, 2009 1:15 AM CDT up reply actions

I tend to agree.

Some people look at Wilts stats and are dazzled, but he could never put up those numbers, or play those minutes in the modern game. Some may argue that to the death, but I’m sticking to my position.

by Xiane on May 9, 2009 1:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Wilt couldn't win a title

until he played a supporting role to West/Baylor, who were unquestionably the best 2/3 ever after MJ/Pip. That says to me a lot about Wilt. I agree, he wouldn’t have been nearly that great in the 90s.

by Snoopy2006 on May 9, 2009 1:21 AM CDT up reply actions

From what I saw.

Magic could play anywhere. He was just most devastating a point.

Magic to me

was a symbol of the joy in basketball.

His teams won, and they did it with style. Those LA Boston matchups were amazing.

It's hard not to believe you when you phrase

Magic as a symbol of the joy in basketball. What a dead on description of the man.

Because of what he did, I can forgive him for going over to ESPN’s craptacular studio show. He should have stayed at TNT, though.

by TitanFan2K on May 9, 2009 1:19 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree,

Hakeem never actually had this level of supporting cast. He had a good one, and the last hurrah for Clyde.

But in Morey we trust. I want him to bring us a Rondo, and some muscle at center. Another SG wouldn’t hurt.

by Xiane on May 9, 2009 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Also, championship teams are usually built around post players

more than perimeter players. Isn’t that the old adage that MJ broke? But it’s true, post players are much easier to build around.

by Snoopy2006 on May 9, 2009 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Not really because MJ was the premier post player of his era

He was, by far, one of the best post players in the league when he was winning all those championships. So even though he was a guard, he still operated mostly in the midrange and in the paint for the bulk of his career.

by hertagnism on May 9, 2009 1:08 AM CDT up reply actions

easier to build around

yes. But i cant think of too many teams with no legitimate perimeter threat and a star center who won many O’Brien trophys.

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions

What about the old Rockets?

They had great 3-point shooters, yes. But not really anyone who could create the way T-Mac or Kobe can. They were mostly spot up shooters.

Put the Dream on this Rockets team, and Battier, Brooks…all these guys will look like they were made to shoot 3’s. The Dream just soaked in all the defensive attention and made the game so easy for everyone else.

by Snoopy2006 on May 9, 2009 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions

yea, but position-wise

he was still a guard. look at every other championship team in tha past 30 years and look at tha rosters. all had a great bigman.

You're not foolin me Kerry Collins.

by TitanFan2K on May 9, 2009 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

The Detroit teams were an exception to those old adages

but other than that, there was definitely a big man that made the game easier for the perimeter players.

by hertagnism on May 9, 2009 1:11 AM CDT up reply actions

The Bad Boys didn't.

But they had an enforcer in Laimbeer.

by airchina23 on May 9, 2009 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions

i'm not debating that fact.

but how many had ONLY a great bigman?

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 1:12 AM CDT up reply actions

I can only think of one team and that was the

Blazers team when Bill Walton was there and won the MVP. I think that was the ’77 team or close to it.

by hertagnism on May 9, 2009 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions

true.

Walton was a beast before the foot injury, but proves my point. 1?

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions

to see if George Mikan had anyone supporting him but that’s way too long ago for my small brain.

by hertagnism on May 9, 2009 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions

haha

i don’t go back that far either, but my point is without that good perimeter shooter who is reliable, its not gonna happen. Artest is not that, as much as we want him to be. He trys, and has good nights like Game 2 or bad like tonight.

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 1:16 AM CDT up reply actions

and as his perimeter players he had Dr. J, Maurice Cheeks, and a young Charles Barkley as a supporting player.

by hertagnism on May 9, 2009 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

exactly.

my point wasnt that there were none with only big-men, but much less then teams with just perimeter guys.

what Hakeem did in ’94 was amazing. 1 star and all role players around him. then u look at shaq and all of his titles had great guards w/ him

You're not foolin me Kerry Collins.

by TitanFan2K on May 9, 2009 1:14 AM CDT up reply actions

I've said it many times before:

Hakeem did something even MJ couldn’t do: he won a title with essentially a bunch of scrubs. Put MJ on that 94 team, and I highly doubt a championship team would result.

by Snoopy2006 on May 9, 2009 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions

scrubs?

horry, cassel(rookie), otis thorpe, vernon maxwell? they arent scrubs to me.

by TheGreatWall on May 9, 2009 1:20 AM CDT up reply actions

I think even us Lakers fans can agree that

Robert Horry was no scrub. He’s still got lots of love from LA.

by hertagnism on May 9, 2009 1:21 AM CDT up reply actions

He’s one of the few I’ve seen not to make fun of Craig Saiger, which says a lot.
