Weighing my rooting options: Lakers or Magic?
Add me to the list of those disappointed that Kobe v. LeBron isn't going to happen. That series was going to be absolutely epic. For those that are excited that the "underdog" made it, I just don't see it. Granted, it will still be an entertaining finals, but it's not going to be a classic. Mark it down - this will be nothing more than an ordinary playoff series. However, that does not mean I'm going to miss it, and thus, I need to find someone to root for.
Why the Lakers:
- Promotes a false sense of accomplishment in losing to the eventual NBA champion.
- Rafer Alston would not receive a ring. Anything to keep him from receiving a ring.
- This could be Shannon Brown's coming out party (I'm a Brown fan; have been since his days at Michigan State).
- Western Conference bragging rights...?
- Shaquille O'Neal gets figuratively dunked on if Kobe Bryant gets his own ring. I would love to see that happen.
- A championship finally gives Kobe the O.K. to leave town, thus temporarily destroying the Laker franchise. Fine by me.
- Dwight Howard getting a ring would give him the "Duncan" edge over Yao, in terms of the ring debate. I don't feel like putting up with that in my explanations.
Why the Magic:
- Rashard Lewis and I have a special bond, aside from the fact that we are both native Houstonians.
- The Utah Jazz also lost to the Lakers, thus nullifying my first reason to root for L.A. I'll sacrifice pride as long as Utah gets nothing.
- We beat the Magic in the regular season. We did not beat the Lakers in the regular season. So, uh, more of that false sense of accomplishment thing.
- Disney World > Disney Land
- Dwight Howard, though he is worse than Yao, deserves to win this.
- If the Lakers were to win, it would throw a wrench into the Kobe/LeBron debate, giving Kobe a slight edge. I'm in the King's court on this one.
- Van Gundy Love; a victory for Stan is a victory for Jeff is a victory for Rockets fans in my book.
- I hate Kobe Bryant. Great player, but I can't stand him. And I told you that Spike Lee documentary would suck. Rod Benson agrees: "Maybe Spike Lee drops "J.J. Redick: Shootin' Treys." It follows him as he shoots treys in practice. It'd probably be as interesting as "Doin' Work" was."
- A ring for J.J. Redick is a ring for Duke.
- If Jameer Nelson comes back, it will lessen the pain of watching Rafer win an NBA championship.
- We will be treated to a glorious Marcin Gortat celebration video.
- This heartwarming post.
The Man in the Middle
- Hedo Turkoglu. I don't know what to do with him. I don't like him, nor do I dislike him. Consider him stricken from the record.
Looks like I've found my team. Go Magic!

I don't even understand how this could be a question.
Fuck the Lakers, duh.

can't serve two masters, and all that
It’s only slightly less reprehensible than rooting for the Jazz.

Being honest about being a pervert doesn't really help.
Except that we can hear your cry for help. And lock you away for your own good.
Thanks for telling us about that Kobe love again, the streets of Houston will be a bit safer as soon as that court order comes through.

So, you remained a Kobe fan? That is good to hear!
I think that fifth technical foul did a lot of good for his image. He really has toned it down.
All good reasons to root for the Lakers or Magic, but I don’t understand the one about Kobe getting the O.K. to leave town if the Lakers win. Why on Earth would Kobe ever do that? If he won, he would be the King of Los Angeles, in fact, people would kiss his feet instead of just bowing to him, like they do today.

Kobe isn't going anywhere.
How many players could you add in his place and make the Lakers a contender? 2? 3? Maybe?

I'll be rooting for the Magic
I won’t be able to stand seeing the Laker’s fans gloat. Also, screw Shannon Brown. I hate anything that has to do with Michigan State. Being from Michigan, I am a Wolverines fan, so screw the Spartans. I would rather see an Adam Morrison coming out party, but they don’t even dress him anymore.

Damn Tom, How Little We Have in Common
1. i LOVE Hedo Turkuglu. An athletic European (sort of…but Turkey is a damn cool country) whos 6’10", can bring the ball up, and shoot off the dribble. Sure, hes got no post up game and occasionally plays bad D, but I still love the guy.
2. I would be happy if Rafer won. Just to throw a wrench in that old ‘Rafer is why we’re not contenders’ argument of old (more a delusional ClutchFan than anyone on here, but whatever).
3. And you’re a DUKIE?!?! Say it ain’t so Bring Back.
But seriously, go Magic. Lewis, Turkoglu, Howard, and even Alston are all cool enough and likable characters (to me anyway). Plus who wants to see gloating Lakers bandwagoners who’ve never even seen LA city lights? Go Magic, if nothing else, then just because they’re the obvious good guys.
Absolutely agree with this
“Western Conference bragging rights…?” is the ONLY reason to root for the Lakers.
There’s no way you can want Rafer to lose more than Kobe. If Rafer wins, he’s near the end of a career as a role player and you’ll rarely hear from him again. If Kobe wins, you’ll have it included in all the crap you hear about him and from him for the next 10 years.
“3. And you’re a DUKIE?!?! Say it ain’t so Bring Back.” Yeah, that one is a tough pill to swallow.
Well
I’m a Duke basketball fan, but I don’t attend Duke.
Sorry.

GO MAGIC!
I hate the Lakers and I hate Kobe.
There is nobody that I dislike on the Magic. Go Orlando!
lakers here :/
my favorite team is houston, but my second favorite is LA.
so even though LA beat my favorite team, they are still my second favorite team.
I already hear about how good Kobe is (and agree)
I want to avoid hearing about how good Rafer is (he’s not)

Go Kobe!
The best overall player in the league!
I just want to see Stan Van Gundy triumph over Phil Jackson.
You just know, Stan would get some Buffalo wings sauce on Phil’s $7000 dollar suit with their fake hug at the end of the series. That alone makes it worth it.
Except for the “Rafer’s Ring” part. That’ll be hard to stomach.
