Please tell me someone is hacking Daryl Morey's twitter account! Please!!
Saw this today through someone else's link (yes, I still refuse to visit Twitter directly).
Gortat? Really? This can't be right.
Why are we targetting a guy we know we'd have to wayyyy overpay?
Then again... in Daryl Morey I trust.

I don't think it's a horrible idea
given that current situation with Yao. Gortat is young and plenty durable. He definitely has time to improve over the course of his career and his defense is already very good.
Above all he seems to play with that “team first attitude” and tenacy that Morey loves. I don’t see why he can’t be a productive part of this team.
On the other hand, how much money do you guys think Gortat is going to be commanding?
I honestly haven’t the faintest idea.

I think we need Gortat to remain even a bit competitive.

Amen
Look, the Rockets just got smacked by reality. We just lost our big man. We were in need of a backup center before Yao went down for the season/forever. There’s no replacing Yao, but having Gortat on the roster might sort of help stop the bleeding.

I love the move
He played like a beast in the playoffs. He played great defense without being a liability on offense. I hope we can sign him reasonably though. I thought he was only looking at like a mid level exception deal?

I know.
He’s only charted 5 career double doubles. I can’t imagine anyone signing him to anything more than 5 mil a year for several years. Then again, he does appear to be the top big man available (unless you count Sheed).

I doubt we overpay for him
Morey will offer him the amount that Morey values him at, and then point out that Houston is in position to make the playoffs, Houston is young and talented, Houston will have money to play with next year, Houston players get extra endorsements because of Yao, etc. If Gortat wants guaranteed money, he’ll go elsewhere. If he wants the playoffs again, we have a shot.

I love the Gortat idea
You watch too much basketball not to know how much potential he has Dave

hey
I love the idea if we get him at a good value.
but if he wants the mid-level value or more… that’s bad value.

Daryl is smarter than most of us
He won’t overpay Gortat
by Sidwho on Jul 1, 2009 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Guess what
if we don’t overpay Gortat he has plenty of other options to choose from. It’s not like we wouldn’t pay him less if we didn’t have to. Keep in mind that Gortat is a RESTRICTED free agent. The Magic would love to keep Gortat and if we were to pay him for what he was worth, which is less than mid-level value, the Magic would just match it. Gortat is talented, yes, but I think you should check out the rest of what’s available in the free market this year before going straight for Gortat.

But...
Orlando has a lot of money locked up in its starters. Dwight, Lewis, Carter, Nelson. I’m not too sure what all their contracts are but if Nelson isnt getting paid right now, then he will be soon so I don’t think they have what it takes to match very many offers. Especially when they traded away some of their backcourt they are going to be signing or adding someone to help them out
by jroberts5 on Jul 1, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gortat might be the first de facto "unrestricted" RFA
Orlando has no free money to spend.
by grungedave on Jul 1, 2009 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Gortat doesn't have too many options
Dallas is busy chasing kidd, i think ryan hollins is a FA too.
I haven’t heard anythign about knicks and pacers. Detroit ,OKC and couple other have decent cap room to shop.
besides that we are in a good position to sign him for somewhere arnd 3 mil a year.
Jeez Cook is a waste of cap space.

If we do sign him
and get 12 pts/ 12 rebounds and a couple of blocks a night out of him I say that’s a good move any way you look at it.

That is assuming
that Yao is not playing of course.
On a side note, we know have the pleasure of being subjected to 7-8 close ups per game of Yao in a suit during games next years. You can expect that to double of losing games and triple of nationally broadcasted games.

Big Men in the NBA arent cheap
To get him, we WILL have to overpay. I see us going after Pachulia if this doesnt work.

birdman is not a true center
he’s tall but doesn’t have the frame to be a center.
by Sidwho on Jul 1, 2009 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
and he's one "hit" away from another big suspension.
by grungedave on Jul 1, 2009 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
but he would be an upgrade from hayes.
And i don’t like the idea of gortat. This whole situation is just plain bad. We should have Mr. Miagi do some of that wax on wax off stuff to magically heal Yao. Then all could be zen again

I think
Gortat overall can do better on D that Birdman.Birdman can just fly in n block. Gortat can hold a player. Word is we offered him MLE last night. He prolly will be red next season.
by Sidwho on Jul 1, 2009 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i guess there is no replacement for a healthy yao.
As long as we get a solid center, we should be able to repeat last year. We still need to keep our core lineup intact.

exactly.
Imagine if Gortat was stepping up to play Center instead of the Chuckwagon last postseason. I think we could have been LA.

I going to make it as simple as I can
Daryl Morey has made exactly 0 mistakes (Steve Francis was a risk that didn’t pay out, it wasn’t a mistake). I refuse to believe he doesn’t know what he’s doing here

I think
a risk that doesn’t pay out is a mistake. Haha, but yea Morey knows his stuff.
by T-Mackin on Jul 1, 2009 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Typically I agree
But in the Francis deal he was paying 2 million for a “max level player”. And it was good will to the fans that really wanted Stevie. Basically he won because he did what a lot of fans wanted, proved Francis couldn’t do it anymore and didn’t pay much to do it

I think a "mistake"
is more like a decision that, given the information you had at the time, you should not have made. So Portland giving Darius Miles a massive contract back in 2004 was a mistake. The Bobcats drafting Adam Morrison was a mistake. “Mistakes” are when you play the expected-payoff analysis wrong.

The Polish Hammer!
Morey announced the meeting on his Facebook page and urged fans to leave notes for Gortat at an e-mail address—rocketsfanslovegortat(at)gmail.com. Morey said that within 10 minutes of his face-to-face meeting with Gortat, more than 100 e-mails had already arrived and the number climbed above 2,000 by noon Wednesday.
"He was reading them with some intensity," Morey said. "He was impressed by the number of messages and how much the fans seem to care about their team. I knew Rockets fans would come through."
The thought of Gortat scanning through his emails reading Rocket fans’ messages at midnight is hilarious to me.

Why the complaints?
He’s 7’0, young and athletic and Yao is a liability for the Rockets year in and year out. Don’t get me wrong, I love Yao Ming, especially because I have some allegiance to China (my family lives in Shanghai) but the fact of the matter is we need another Center with or without Yao.

Kelvin Cato
That’s the last big guy I remember us signing to big money that we didn’t draft…WAY overpaid and a crappy player besides. We’re almost better grabbing that giant Chinese guy that beat up Jose Canseco…he’d play for cheap I bet…or we could get the Big Show…I hear those wwe guys are way underpaid…oooh oooh, or we could bring Manute Bol out of retirement. His arms are still long I’m sure…he doesn’t even have to run, he can just stand on the other end of the court and wait for the bad guys to come his way and just stand there…that long armed freak could block a 3 pointer standing under the basket. I wonder if Mr. Fantastic is available…
