Orlando matches Dallas' offer to Gortat
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4324941
ESPN is reporting that the Magic have matched the offer Cuban and the Mavericks have made to Orlando Center Marcin Gortat.
This is GREAT news for Houston and for Daryl Morey, who will probably have another turn at trying to aquire Gortat. It looks like a good idea by Orlando as well, realizing Gortat's value and opting to resign him probably in order to sign and trade.
Editor's Note: Morey wasn't going to make a move until this situation was resolved. Now that Orlando has retained Gortat, I think Morey can take another shot at him. Honestly, I haven't looked much into a possible deal at all, but Battier's name is the one that I keep hearing. I'll do some more research on it and come up with a feasible plan. -- Tom
UPDATE: Gortat will be untouchable until December 15th, and the Mavs cannot try to trade for him for another year.

Forget it...
From what I know Gortat CANNOT be traded to ANY team until December 15, 2009. Which means Morey will not wait until then to acquire a center…
Plus would you pay 5 years/34 millions for Gortat??? Thats an average of 6.8 million per year, very far from the 3.5/4 million per year offer that the Rockets proposed…

that morey offered 3.5/4 to gortat?

Amen...
In response to EHTR: I thought I remember that figure too, but maybe I just made it up, or am making an assumption on his expected value before the Mavericks offer.
And to all the Morey haters: Add this to the list (albeit a minor detail): Not chasing the most hyped back up center in the offseason market into the $6-$7 a year range just to have a solid defensive big over 6’9 on the roster. Still a lot of offseason left, and Morey’s history has shown that its just ridiculous to think that our GM DOESN’T have a plan.
Remember when we had that chronic hole at 4 position, and everyone was talking about “we have to get Wilcox/someone at that level in and we’ll be good”. Who did Morey grab? Scola/Landry. I have a feeling the moves we make this offseason won’t be appreciated until about 6 months from now.

Hard To Know What Gortat Is Worth
Hard to know what Marcin Gortat is worth. He didn’t play many minutes but he was sitting behind probably the best all-around center today.
From what I saw of Gortat in the playoffs, I like the potential he has to become a good starting center. He always brought strong play during the minutes he was filling in for Howard. He’s a good defensive player who will challenge slashers at the rim. I recall a couple of nice blocks he had on LeBron near the rim in the Eastern Conference Finals. He moves his feet fairly well and is pretty agile for a true 5. He can finish near the rim and he looked pretty good in running the pick and roll with Turkoglu. He’s got decent hands, sets good screens, and can finish on the roll adequately.
Now is he worth a 34 million dollar deal? I am not sure about that. He’s never played starter minutes so it is hard to see whether he can translate his production in limited minutes over a stretch of 30+ minutes per game. I would definitely want Gortat on my team for 4 million per season. 6.8 million is a lot for a player that hasn’t really proved himself beyond 10-12 minutes per game. I do like his game though.

But doesn't that mean
his asking price would only go up? If 2 teams outside ORL are courting him, it would cost us more to get him, cause there is probably going to be 4 teams willing to trade for him.
"It's who we are," Battier said. "I don't think we're going to get the love of the six foot blonde bombshell. That's what the Lakers are here for. It's alright, I like our demographic."

Not necessarily…
With Yao out, the Rockets can offer Gortat a starting position. That’s pretty much how they got Trevor from the Lakers.

Exactly
it’s no longer Gortat’s choice so we are being play against other teams for the best deal/trade. Which makes it harder for Morey, some how I don’t see us grabbing him through a trade unless its for Barry and Hayes

Which I am pretty sure Otis Smith didn’t match Gortat’s offer sheet just so he could trade him for an old, gimpy swingman and an undersized 4/5 who can’t score.

I probably should have worded that better....
I mean that’s all I would give up for him if was was Morey.
Why wouldn’t the magic have interest in Barry and Hayes.
Barry gives them a veteran presence with championship experience and can play small mins at the PG/SG /SF positions. So the gain another ball handler which they definitely need since turk is gone.
Hayes- they get a great rebounder and defender off the bench when Dwight is out/ or in foul trouble
Plus he can play SF/PF/C, more likely the SF/PF- back up to Bass (which is a great under rated pick up for the magic) especially for depth for injuries!
I definitely wouldn’t give up someone like lowry, brooks or landry

Definitely wouldn't trade Brooks...
I agree that Brooks is off limits in that type of deal. I also probably wouldn’t trade Lowry or Landry in that deal unless there was more coming back. I agree with the premise that we shouldn’t give up TOO much for an unproven starter.
That said, I don’t see why the Magic would have any interest in either Barry or Hayes. Barry is old, slow, and struggles on defense. I cringed watching Barry play this year. He was valuable at one point as a 3-point shooter who could stretch the floor but his legs are gone now. As for Hayes, he is useful as a rebounder, and defender. But he is still undersized, not as skilled as Gortat and would have issues scoring in the D-League let alone the NBA. I like Hayes for the role he fills and how hard he works but as Nitroberg said he is a very average player.
The Magic if they want to trade Gortat probably have much better options on the table then Hayes & Barry.

And then he still might be too expensive................

Gortat is gone, chasing the highest bidder only to be snagged back by his first team
So time to look for whomever else is out there, or look within.
This is turning into that line from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire book, when Harry and Ron waited to the last minute for dates, and were saying an “average girl” was starting to look “good”
Chuck Hayes at the Center spot is that “average girl” who’s starting to look good.

In Daryl Morey, Rick Smith and Ed Wade we (usually) trust.

Feasible Trade Package,altho unlikely
Orlando is also supposed to want a decent back-up PG,and they’d need a back-up C.
Since Gortat would be a BYC,Hou would have to get creative,so…
Lowry,Dorsey for Gortat and Barry w/cash for a buyout for part of the Turkoglu TE. Two seperate deals done together so it’s
Lowry and Dorsey, roughly $2.9mil for Gortats’s cap trade value of $2.9mil and overall total of Lowry,Dorsey,Barry(@ $4.9mil) for Gortat’s real $5.8mil.
Barry bought out w/Rockets cash,Lowry is their back-up 2 on trial for a yr and Dorsey is cheap back-up C who can wrestle w/Dwight in practice.
But I wouldn’t be suprised if the Magic intend to trade him to OKC or even Detroit(which just made some cap room)for a future First..

I like Houston as a trade partner for my Magic
Like I’ve written somewhere else on here I would love a Gortat for Battier trade. its makes alot of sense for both teams but if your not willing to part with Shane, Lowry is tempting
Even last year I thought you guys got the better PG in Lowry while we got Alston. unfortunately Lowry is nowhere near as valuable as Gortat. So I dont know where the teams would go from there

I think I’m seated in the “was excited about Gortat until the Mavs offer made him a bit too pricey for what he brings to the parquet” section.

Same here
I like Gortat quite a bit. He’s better than 60/40 in my book to be an upper quartile starting center in the NBA. That said, he’s paid too much for a 60% shot. And Morey made that clear with his offer

Don't panic
Where exactly did Gortat come from? Wasn’t he a more or less free player?
Would have been nice to have cheap, but are we all sure he’s a starting C? Wouldn’t he have mostly played backup minutes against backup C?
Let’s not blow a game Against an exhausted and injured celtics out of proportion.
"So do you keep open 3pt FG percentage?"
"Yeah, we'd have everything you'd want, Bill."
"I hate you."
