Summer League: Rockets 87 - Trailblazers 82

Nice win for the Rockets, who are now 4-0 in the Summer League.  It's nothing to brag about, but you never say 'no' to wins.  Here's the box score from tonight's 87-82 win over Portland.  My take on the win and on our individual performances will be up sometime tomorrow.  Cheers:

Well

First of all, you can always come downstairs for the most trusted Rockets information out there.

If this is the roster:

Brooks
Scola
Lowry
Hayes
Landry
McGrady
Andersen
Battier
Ariza
Cook
Barry

We’re only going to have room for one call-up, unless we can somehow move Barry or Cook down to the D-league. Bones is useless now that we won’t be in title contention. We need to play younger talent.

I’d say Dorsey will get the first call-up, unless of course we want to feature the 2-3 position more now that we’ve added Big Dave. if so, as of today, I’m thinking Budinger gets the call, just based off his summer league performance and shooting range. It’s going to be tough to deny Jermaine Taylor or even White a spot, though.

If I were going to guess

Cook might be moved in a way similar to Steve Francis last season.

And remember that two players can be moved to the inactive list.

Budinger can stroke

I know it’s just summer league, but I’m already baffled he got drafted so late. He can shoot it

Agree

He’s been outplaying some of the lottery picks. Still it’s hard to say if the summer league means anything. I remember how horrible Landry was in his rookie summer league and he turned out to be pretty good. ;)

Budinger

Chase was listed as high as 10 in some non-stupid mock drafts. You’d think it would be possible to look past the circus that was AZ basketball.

Need to move Barry and Cook

Everything Morey does has long-term implications. He has a multi-year time horizon on all his moves. I don’t see Barry and Cook fitting into this vision. My guess is they will be moved and replaced by Budinger and Dorsey. This gives them scoring and rebounding/toughness and both have multi-year upside. Taylor probably goes to D-League for development. Leunen back overseas.

Correct..right on the dot..

Dorsey the horsey and Bud are two great talents that we have to consider.. Get rid of Barry and Cook..

Exactly! Budinger is mr. clutch.

Im really impressed with the way he plays in the summer league especially when he took over and hit that clutch three pointer to tie the game, and his strong penetration to invite contact, and poise down the stripes for the lead and very crucial for the win.. he can ttake charge in a game.. with full of intensity and desire, and plays a lot of heart with such confidence.. Im pretty sure he can make it to the Houston final roster. Genius Morey will not pass such a talent.. you can call him the bud light, the bud chaser , the little nowitzski, whatever..As you say guys .. He can shoot.. shoots the light down…keep it up bud!

Guys last I checked you have 15 guys on your roster, only 12 are active at a time

So that would mean that if we based EVERYTHING on Summer League play, then that gives us Dorsey and Budinger. Taylor and White are locked in a battle for the last roster spot, too. Now, I also see a move saying goodbye to Bryan Cook or Brent Barry a la Steve Francis last year if we think both White and Taylor are worth keeping.

In Daryl Morey, Rick Smith and Ed Wade we (usually) trust.

Gotta love

the effeciency by James White. 16 pts on 3/4 shooting is pretty sweet. He needs to be getting the line like this to be effective in this league (a la Kevin Martin.)

You got a steal in Budinger

I’ve followed him since high school. He will never be a good defensive player, but what he can do is shoot, run the offense the way the coach directs him to, and make smart plays both in the half court and on the break. He can finish with either hand and is low maintenance.

He’ll play in the NBA longer than 50% of the first rounders. He’s doing well in the summer league because

  1. he’s pissed he was taken so low and has a point to prove
  2. he knows he’s one of the best players on the court in these summer league games

Once he makes the roster he may go back to deferring and he’ll look tentative for stretches, but stick with him and he’ll be a good addition for years to come.
