I've noticed over the past year or so that the DreamShake writers love to jock Daryl Morey. Most of the time I agree with you guys when you lick his kneecaps because I do think he is an incredibly bright GM. However, there's a big part of me that misses the cajones of Carroll Dawson.
Morey makes smart moves that don't cost the team a lot of money. But it doesn't take any balls to pull off deals like that. It takes brains. To use a baseball analogy, he hits singles and doubles very well. He's the Ichiro of the front office execs in the NBA. You can't be mad at him because he's doing a great job. But is he building us a championship team? Sure, the deals/moves/picks for Scola, Landry, Brooks, Lowry, Wafer and Anderson were great. But remember, those guys are role players. Only Brooks and Scola are legitimate 3rd scoring options. However, what we seem to be giving him a big pass on is the fact that he banked our franchise's future on two injury-prone superstars and now look where we are. We're lottery next year. Maybe for years to come. That is on his shoulders. Sure, not all of it was in his control, but he still came out publicly stating that Yao was in our long term plans, which still baffles me. And not trading T-Mac in the Summer of 2008 when he still had reasonable market value is definitely something he's kicking himself over. I guarantee it.
Without any more rambling, my question for the group. Do you think Morey has the cajones to pull off a big move either this upcoming season or in the Summer of 2010? And by "big move" I'm talking about a move to bring in a new-age Superstar or two to get this franchise back on track with players that actually play 90% of the Regular Season and 100% of the Post Season. Think of some of the big ballsy moves Dawson pulled off? Drexler. Barkley. T-Mac. None of those were "safe & smart" moves in the Morey sense. Each were lambasted by some critics and praised by other critics. That's the sign of a "big move". None of Morey's decisions get lambasted because they aren't big enough for the media to really even care about.
Question: Does Boy Genius have balls???
