Hypothetically Speaking

I saw in a recent fanpost the desire of a Houston fan to bring Rashard Lewis home. This started to make me wheels turn. First off I'd like to know if Rashard (or "Sweet Lew" as the Magic fans call him) has any affection from Houston fans. I personally really like the guy. He has a great work ethic and personality. He is a great team guy that never gets into anybody's face for not giving him the ball enough or not letting him take the last shot. (Even though he's shown he can knock it down)

Rashard is so valuable to the Magic because whatever position we put him in he has a mismatch. Whether at the 3 or the 4. So, in turn, he is a key piece in what the Magic do. However, I was thinking about how the Magic could get better if we traded him to the Rockets. Here's what I came up with.

If there was somehow a guarantee that the Orlando Magic could sign the free agents Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh  then I would want the Magic to trade Rashard Lewis. Of course, we would have to take the expiring contract of Tracy McGrady in order to do this. Here is where the trade gets interesting for both teams.

Magic get:

Tracy McGrady

Shane Battier

Houston gets:

Rashard Lewis

Marcin Gortat

The numbers match up pretty well so that's not an issue. The Magic get nothing out of an injured T-Mac this year but do get a replacement SF in Battier. Houston gets their center they've been looking for as well as a SF slash PF. if you ask me this greatly improves your frontcourt. Well I'm done so here's what the teams would look like after the trades.

Houston:

PG - Aaron Brooks

SG - Trevor Ariza

SF - Rashard Lewis

PF - Luis Scola

C - Marcin Gortat

Magic:

PG - Jameer Nelson

SG - Vince Carter / 2010 Dwyane Wade

SF - Shane Battier

PF - Brandon Bass/ or a Chris Bosh the next year :)

C - Dwight Howard

Oh, sweet!

We get a vastly overpaid small forward and a backup center!

Your friendly neighborhood Dream Shake mod.

Hypothetically not good.

We already have Andersen which i think its a lot better than Gortat in terms of versatility..(despite not having yet played in the NBA.. but hes a winner in European League.. so we just look forward to his baptism of fire)
and Battier is one of the pillars of Houston.. you cant trade him just like that. Hes so valuable to the team.

Hate to break it to you

but Anderson is a euro pf.. in the mold of Okur, Dirk and Bargnani.. None of those guys can rebound or defend worth a damn. Gortat is a CENTER through and through

by Souwantmyname on Jul 20, 2009 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

really

i dont really want gortat anymore…also i believe he cant be dealt till like Dec 15th…

ummm

Lewis and Ariza play basically the same position

by grungedave on Jul 20, 2009 8:52 AM CDT reply actions

agreed

Ariza is more versatile than Lewis in the long run.. and T-Riz is on the upside of his game..
and besides hes too expensive.

by CONAIR on Jul 20, 2009 9:15 AM CDT reply actions

What?? Are you kidding?

Lewis can play the 3 AND the 4. Ariza is a SF that can play some SG. Lots of SF’s can do that. How many SF’s do you know that can play PF effectively? Actually the reason the Magic traded Ariza was because he wasn’t versatile enough

by Souwantmyname on Jul 20, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Ron Artest can play SG/SF/PF

I'm not so sure

AK47 can play the 4 effectively.

Well sure

But he’s better in the Magic offense when he has others taking the pressure off him. He’s far from a number one option, but he’s a great number 2

That's the point

Right now he would be your best offensive player

by Souwantmyname on Jul 20, 2009 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

But you don't want that

Because he can’t be a number one option, so that defeats the purpose

Agreed.

We need someone who can create his own offense off the dribble.

Rashard can go to the bucket – but we need a better ball handler than him. He’s much better as a spot up shooter.

You have Brooks and Ariza to create off the dribble

Rashard is a fantastic spot up shooter and a underrated post player… These are 2 things you don’t really have in 1 player

we passed

I learned houston passed on R.Lewis in the draft…when he was hoping to get picked by his home team
you know how that feels?

by Sidwho on Jul 20, 2009 4:24 PM CDT reply actions

Here you go

“His hometown’s team, the Houston Rockets, declined to select Lewis with any of their three first-round picks and instead chose Michael Dickerson, Mirsad Türkcan and Bryce Drew, much to the disappointment of Lewis and a large majority of Rockets fans.”

now that we in a shithole…we call on RASHARD !!!

by Sidwho on Jul 20, 2009 4:26 PM CDT reply actions

That is some wishful thinkin......But the Magic want to win next year w/ Rashard

not to mention the fact it would kill the team chemistry for the magic

Never trust a fart

by AB's triple double on Jul 20, 2009 10:51 PM CDT reply actions

rashard is good, but this trade isn’t all that good.

gortat wants to be a starter somewhere. he could do that for next season, but then what? go back to the bench? no way you bench scola. gortat cannot score like scola can.

13 points in 39 seconds. Enough said.

by Duhoh on Jul 20, 2009 11:17 PM CDT reply actions

Why would the magic want to lose another

2nd scoring option and someone who can play their pick and roll offence if needed ? (sure not as good as the Turk but his gone now).
That means their blowing up half their starters that made the NBA finals for what? a avg season and then pinning their hopes on wade staying healthy and maybe they can win 2-3 years down the track?

Magic would be morons to do this straight after last seasons run…

For us rockets we take on a over inflated backup C’s contract,
We get a max level contract in ’Shard….

Why not just chase a younger superstar in Wade or Bosh our selves who is actually worth a max?? (not that I’m saying Bosh is worth a max contract)

"It's who we are," Battier said. "I don't think we're going to get the love of the six foot blonde bombshell. That's what the Lakers are here for. It's alright, I like our demographic."

by DREAM34 on Jul 21, 2009 1:48 AM CDT reply actions

Lewis is good

but I want a more explosive scorer at his salary. I like Lewis but I don’t think he can carry a team like T-Mac did for us when he was healthy.
