Source: Yao being recommended season-ending procedure

Reports yesterday indicated that the Rockets would have to wait another week to find out whether or not Yao Ming will need surgery.

However, a source close to the situation has told me that Yao has been recommended a procedure that would likely cause him to miss the entire upcoming season. This procedure would involve the use of a bone stimulator that would not require tampering with Yao's foot, ultimately allowing Yao to return at a higher playing level. It would also aid in lengthening his career.

The other option would be surgical, in an effort to remove the screws currently in place and re-position the bone.  While this could allow Yao to return next season, they would in no way guarantee long-term health.

But again, we'll know what the entire situation is in a week's time.

No reason to rush him back this year

Only to have him worse off in the long-term. We’re probably not going to win the title this year with out without Yao, so if a season-ending surgery is best for his career I’m on board.

Same here

Next year would be about figuring out what we have after a bunch of trades that are likely to happen

Agreed

Let the poor guy rest. The rest of the team will continue to develop and improve while he is out.

With him having good health prospects come 2010, and a good core group of players around him, we should be able to replenish the team through free agency or trades when the time comes.

Of course, his long term health makes that significantly easier, so the non-invasive options would seem best.

Yao needs to man up

Yes, Yao has been THE man at Houston leading them to how many playoffs.
However, Yao has to be a man and do what is best for his health and prolong his career. Stop playing for China and take a season break to recuperate his injuries. He should stop listening to others when they tell him what to do when all he needed was recuperation. Now, where is he? From a season to a career threatening injury.

Man up and tell them to buzz off until you are healed.

Umm...

You can’t just tell China to “buzz off”. It’s his home country. We all know Yao is a good guy, and he would never forget his roots. He’s an icon to the Chinese people, and he understands that completely and refuses to ignore the people who made him famous to begin with. If he recuperates in time to play with China next summer, he will. I’m not saying I’m happy about it, but it’s the right thing to do.

If LeBron James or Kobe Bryant went to Europe to play, and didn’t come back to play for the US in Olympics or World Championships, how would that make you feel? I’d be pissed.

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

And on top of that

China literally owns their players

right

the best way to think about it is that we get Yao on loan for 8 or 9 months, not that China gets him for 3 or 4.

houston rockets management needs to man up

If Yao played fo Mark Cuban, you think he’ll put up with that…we need to get the owners to man up and tell the CCP what is best for his long term prospect/career…where there is a will, there is a way

by testicularfortitude on Jul 4, 2009 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, he would put up with it

I’m not sure your question? If he didn’t, Yao would not have been allowed to sign there
