Barry on the move?

Photo

Per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle:

The Rockets have been in trade talks with several teams about moving veteran guard Brent Barry, according to several individuals with knowledge of the talks.

The most serious discussions have been with the Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. A trade to the Clippers could extend Barry's career, with the Clippers potentially offering a chance to play near Barry's Los Angeles area home.

Though I do love Bones, this comes as no surprise.  Moving Barry would free up a roster spot for one of the younger guys, whether it be Chase Budinger, James White, or Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Roster room,Lux Tax relief

The three teams listed are all below the salary cap or have a TE and well below Lux Tax. The Rockets would send Barry and cash to one of those teams. The Rockets get a fresh Trade Exception of $2mil for a yr,get below the Lux Tax and clear a roster spot.
The other team gets cash to but Barry out and a little extra to make the deal.(If the Rockets send Barry and $2.5mil cash to say the Grizz, they buy him out and pocket $500,000 for their trouble. They’re below the Lux Tax enought that Barry doesn’t affect them.)

Well

maybe could this be a sign of a bigger move…?

Would rather keep Barry around to mentor Budinger for the season than make room for White or Pops. I wouldn’t be surprised if those two are cut before regular season or are waived before their contracts become guaranteed.

Barry Mentor

Wayno,
I agree w/you on the vet mentoring and teaching role, plus he could be emergency third PG.
But it’s possible he asked for a buyout so he could join a contenter. If so-and pure speculation on my part-the Rockets want to trade him and let the other team buy him out so his buyout doesn’t count towards Rocket’s salary cap.

Barry's profile at this point

is missing piece for a contender. Without Yao or TMac, that’s not the Rockets.

I’m also half convinced he’s done, and shipping him out for a fruitcake at Christmas could be a good idea.

"So do you keep open 3pt FG percentage?"
"Yeah, we'd have everything you'd want, Bill."
"I hate you."
