The Dream Links - September 1st, 2009

There's still not a whole lot to talk about, but I figure September will be a much more interesting month than August was.  As a result, here are some links to get you pumped for phase two of the offseason.

Three teams trying to land Rockets' Brent Barry? - Yahoo! Sports
A refresher on which teams will likely take Brent Barry. Unfortunately...(read below)

Source: Clippers no longer interested in Rockets guard Brent Barry - Los Angeles Times
A Clippers source confirmed a report from the Houston Chronicle that said the Clippers were among three teams to have had talks with the Rockets for acquiring veteran guard Brent Barry, but that the team's interest is "dated." (What a buzz kill.)

Justice: Rockets to be applauded for offseason work - Houston Chronicle
What? We're linking to Richard Justice now?

Don’t ever underestimate Argentina, Luis Scola - Interbasket.net
"Luis Scola of the Houston Rockets, finished with a game-high 30 points, the 6-8 power forward shot 10-19 from the field, added 8 rebounds and passed out 5 assists." Language barrier...

NBA Saturday: Can Rockets Contend? - HOOPSWORLD
Bill Ingram on Tracy McGrady's potential impact in 2009-2010.  Unlike Ingram, I'm not convinced it will be with the Rockets.

The top 10 worst jerseys of the last decade - Ball Don't Lie
Kelly Dwyer still hates our old uniforms.  "Debuting in 1995 and lasting for nearly a decade, these pinstripe-laden unis aided in the destruction of the two-time NBA champions, reminded us all of bad pajamas and then outfitted an entire (rather large) nation in awful, awful threads once Yao Ming(notes) debuted in them during the 2002-03 season." (I actually liked the Spaceman Stripes)

Been thinking about this...
Unlike Ingram, I’m not convinced it will be with the Rockets

What, exactly, do you expect the Rockets could get for McGrady? Because, honestly, I can’t see the Rockets getting anything significant.

Let’s break this down into two scenarios:
1) McGrady comes back and is bad/average
2) McGrady comes back and is good/awesome.

Under scenario 1, T-Mac is a grossly overpaid player whose only value to teams is as an expiring contract.

Under scenario 2, he’s still probably overpaid, but he provides a lot of value to a contending team.

BUT, under each of these scenarios, we have to remember that McGrady is making $22 million next year. Because of salary cap rules, that means that the Rockets can only trade him (without another player, anyways) for contracts totalling between $16.5 and $27.5 million.

No contending team has anything like that just lying around in a combination of terrible contracts and young stars they’re desperate to get rid of. Barring a Mark Cuban-style mental breakdown (HERP DERP IMMA TRADE FOR KIDD), I don’t think any team out there is going to trade for a one-season rental like McGrady for anything significant.

So scenario 2 is probably out, but scenario 1 seems even less likely to me. Or, at least, it seems unlikely that it would result in anything helpful for the Rockets. MAYBE the Pacers/Hornets/Kings suddenly decide that they’re financially insolvent and want to give away Granger/Paul/Martin and whatever contractual albatross they have hanging around their necks in exchange for McGrady and some other guys, but I doubt it.

I mean, look at the trades we’ve seen for guys getting paid like McGrady (Garnett, Shaq, etc.). And all of those were for more years under contract and better players.

I think it’s fairly likely that the Rockets hold onto McGrady until at least the end of this season, regardless of what happens between now and February.

nothing...

I fully expect Morey to allow McGrady’s contract to expire. The cap space next offseason is far more valuable than any rent-a-player we can get for McGrady.

and I’m okay with that…

i was merely speculating

if you put me on the spot, i think he’ll expire, too. nothing works.

I'd like for him to play some good basketball before he expires

it’d be a shame to lose TMac so young.

"So do you keep open 3pt FG percentage?"
"Yeah, we'd have everything you'd want, Bill."

worst. jerseys. ever.

The Rockets have been cursed ever since they debuted the Pajama jerseys. 2 rings in 2 seasons before the switch… 0 in the 14 seasons since. Ugh.

yeah, probably.

I’m having a hard time thinking of any uniform that was really worse. At least the “tetris” Denver uniforms were kinda cool. The closest would be the Mutombo-era Hawks uniforms, maybe.

Or anything featuring the word “JAZZ” and mountains in some sort of weird visual non-sequitur.

I like the new unis though.

I think they’re an example of design that does a lot, and is also attractive in other markets.
