Luis Scola: We're talking about a first-rate badger in Scola. He's a master in terms of timing and deception. Not only can Scola commit the hard foul, but he's also the kind of player who is always pushing, nudging, grabbing, bumping, you name it. When it's about getting under an opponent's skin, Scola is a first-teamer.

Scola
actually did rank #6 in personal fouls in the NBA last year. Yao was right behind him. Morey has given several interviews where he’s talked about how important not fouling is to good defense, and overall the Rockets are pretty good about that. But it’s interesting that their two main frontcourt players are among the league’s most prolific (of course, that’s just totals. It would be interesting to see per-minute foul rates).

Scola's main fouls come from
the Offensive end trying scrap for offensive boards and strip opposition rebounds directly after gaining the rebound.
This doesn’t effect the teams defence
"It's who we are," Battier said. "I don't think we're going to get the love of the six foot blonde bombshell. That's what the Lakers are here for. It's alright, I like our demographic."
hmmm
maybe… I’d bet that a lot more of his fouls come from offensive/loose ball stuff than the average player.
I wonder if there’s any stats site out there that track what type of fouls a player is called for. It seems like one of those things that is basically impossible to know (unless you’re a company or team investing in tracking your own stats), since the NBA only tracks personal fouls in general.

82games says Scola committed 82 shooting fouls and 24 offensive fouls last season
Those account for 106 of the 261 fouls he committed last year, meaning 155 of them must have been of the non-shooting or loose-ball variety.

Cool, I forgot that 82games had that.
(…along with virtually everything else one would want)
Yao committed 170 shooting fouls and 42 offensive fouls, out of 257 personal fouls. So about 18% of Yao’s fouls were loose-ball. Scola’s loose-ball fouls accounted for almost 60%. Neat. So Dream34 was right (you may have even understated it).
