Around SBN: Where Do The Lakers Go From Here?

A few interesting thoughts from DM

I just had lunch with a friend who attended a lecture Daryl Morey gave at his business school. A couple interesting things I took away- you may have already heard many of these from various interviews Morey has given.

  • The Rockets spend 10 times as much on analytics than any other team in the NBA. Not sure how Morey has that detailed of information on how teams allocate their budget, but if he said it publicly, there must be some truth to it.
  • The Rockets as constructed are a good team with good players, but no matter how many good players you may have you need two superstars in this league to be an elite team and be competitive for tittle. This point isn't earth-shattering or anything, but I think the point is that the two superstar model is what has worked for 99% of NBA title winners. There have of course been exceptions (94 Rockets obviously come to mind), but DM understands that he needs another star alongside Yao for the Rockets to compete for a championship. Having a bunch of above-average, good players alongside Yao will not be enough.
  • He mentioned specifically by name, Chris Bosh and Joe Johnson, as two of his favorite players, namely because he views them as severely underrated. This comment really caught me by surprise, because Bosh and Johnson are players I've always viewed as very good, but will always be overpaid since they fall into that second-tier superstar category. Combined with the Bosh trade rumors makes this comment quite interesting- I don't think DM would trade away promising young (and cheap) players unless he thought he was getting exceptional value in return and all signs for me point that DM highly rates Bosh (and JJ apparently as well). Even if we can't get Bosh in a trade, it seems plausible we will be targeting both him and JJ in free-agency this summer.

No cursing in title. No pirated material, such as links to online game streams. Do not cut/paste entire sections of content from other websites. Thanks.

Ha!

The two players whom OAL deems to be overrated are two of Morey’s favorites. Haha!

Man could you see DM doing a deal snatching both of em up!?

Since it’s been speculated that a deal for Bosh doesn’t necessarily have to be for Macs contract. We’d be so far over the cap but damnit thats a championship line up (& a DREAM) but still fun to do on NBA 2K10 LOL!!!

PG-Brooks/Lowry
SG-Johnson/Taylor
SF-Ariza/Budinger (Shanes gone in trade more than likely)
PF-Bosh/Landry/Hayes (Scola also traded)
C-Yao/Andersen/Dorsey

thow in some D league pick ups to fill out the roster. Harris,Wafer whatever….

NEVER underestimate the mind of Morey...

If DM is targetting Chris Bosh, then that means he is preparing the team to transition to post-Yao years.

Not that we will trade away Yao, but playing Yao less minutes with him still recuperating from his foot reconstruction.

Even with either/both Yao and Bosh, we will still need a superstar SG to team up with them. Unless DM thinks Ariza and Budinger have steep learning curves for next year.

I disagree. There’s no reason Bosh/Yao can’t play together. Actually, that sounds a lot like the Lakers Bynum/Gasol frontcourt. Gasol/Bosh is perhaps a push, and Yao better than Bynum. I also think Brooks/Ariza/Battier/Bosh/Yao definitely has a chance to be a championship-quality lineup. There’s no way we can pay another superstar if they sign Bosh anyway.

I think the team can do better than Joe Johnson.

I don’t follow Joe Johnson’s games very much. He’s not hyped up very much here. Can he carry a team?

by RoxBeliever on Jan 11, 2010 8:10 PM CST reply actions

Joe Johnson is the man

I was just going to post about how everyone wants Chris Bosh so much. No doubt Chris Bosh is a monster and would be great for this team. Joe Johnson, however, brings what we need most next year.
This would be… taking some offensive pressure off of Trevor Ariza! Honestly, I really can’t stand Ariza at this point and I think the Rockets need someone that can be another deadly swingman. Scola and Yao will be able to control the post well enough next year. If we get Bosh, I feel as if the roster would be too skewed towards PF. You can argue that Landry can play as SF, but I think Scola/Landry is undoubtedly the sickest PF tandem in the league at this point.
Next year would look like a pretty amazing year if we were to get Joe Johnson. Just sayin’

The 1993/1994 Rockets had two superstars…. or at least two Hall of Famers:

Hakeem Olajuwon and Robert Horry.

I will not accept any arguments to the contrary.

fuck him!

If Kenny Smith could simply have done his job in May 1993, the Rockets could have been a three-peat™ team. But nooooooo, Kenny bricked a wide open jumper against Seattle in Game 7. FU, Kenny.

by grungedave on Jan 12, 2010 12:11 PM CST up reply actions

Yes they had 2 hall of famers

But in 1994, the difference between the scoring average of Hakeem and the 2nd highest scoring Rocket (who was Otis Thorpe) was about 14-15 ppg. In the past 20 years, it has been the 2-star system that has won

1991-1993: MJ and Scottie
1994: Dream
1995: Dream + Clyde
1996-1998: MJ and Scottie
1999: The Twin Towers
2000-2002: Shaq and Kobe
2003: Duncan and Giniboli
2004: A great team led by Chauncy Billups
2005: Duncan and Parker
2006: D-Wade and Shaq
2007: Parker and Duncan
2008: KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce
2009: Kobe and Gasol

So that means in 2014 it’ll be a 1 star or no star team winning the title. As for now, look for a Kobe/Gasol repeat, a KG/Allen/Pierce trophy, a King James/Shaq title or a title for Duncan/Parker.

Oh yeah, the point I wanted to make...

The 1994 team bucked the trend, but usually having a second big star on your team helps carry the load offensively if your ‘ace’ is having a tough night or facing a tough matchup.

If we do go out and pluck 2 young stars, Bosh and a SG from the following is what I’d prefer: Joe Johnson, Kevin Martin, Andre Idougala, Caron Butler or Jason Richardson (of course I’d take Chris Paul as well, but that’s just being greedy)

I almost put Michael Redd on there…and then I realized that he’s MORE INJURY PRONE THAN YAO IS.

Plus Redd is out for the season!

Man thats too bad cause I like Redd but yep injury prone is putting it lightly. He may have ended his career this time.

So tell me…

… just how many shots have you made during a NBA playoff game?

Joe Johnson is balling right now, and I can’t believe that the Hawks would trade him away. He’s the leader of their team, and their team is one of the best in the east this year. This is the best Hawks team in years, and they’ve swept the Celtics (3-0) so far this season. I doubt that trade happens, and depending on how far they go in the postseason this year, he’ll want another pay raise for his next contract.

Bosh on the other hand is on a team going nowhere. I don’t know how DM could make that trade happen, but it seems like the more plausible outcome to me. We have shooters on the roster already…what we sorely need is some height/shot blocking.

by ReverendRocket on Jan 12, 2010 11:03 AM CST reply actions

It'd be nice to have both but I forgot JJ is a free agent next year so we probably can't afford him.

I’m sure hes going to get more than we could offer and I doubt Atlanta would trade him right now,so long shot! Sucks but that would be nice! Bute as I’ve been saying all over TDS Bosh & Iggy are just fine to me!

Hearing Daryl on sports radio 610 yesterday morning just continues to make me believe

that he is TRYING to pull off 2 deals. 1 for Macs contract & another for some other players on our squad. He stated & I can’t remember his exact words but we are lacking an offensive player and he’d like to address that through trade or other players stepping up (c’mon TRADE we know)! He states that the Rockets are trying to make a deal using Macs contract but if they can make another move to help for the future they’ll do that ALSO. Him saying also plus reading the Stein post that Houston has the pieces to get Bosh not necessarily using Mcgradys contract makes me truly believe hes trying to make 2 seperate moves! I sure hope he can pull it off seeing as how he really wants Bosh but that we NEED a 2 guard. Bosh & Iggy, Bosh & Iggy!! C’mon 76ers keep losing & c’mon Raps just give up the Rupaul er Bosh I mean!

I guess we all enjoy being GM cause we all at times do the line up thing I’m bout to do, but here goes….

PG- Brooks/Lowry
SG- Iguodala/Budinger/Taylor
SF- Ariza/Young
PF- Bosh/Scola/Hayes
C- Yao/Dalembert/Andersen

This is what I kinda think may happen:
Rockets trade Mac/Dorsey to Philly & get Iggy/Dalembert/Young
then
Rockets trade Landry/Battier/Cook/(some picks) to Raps & get Bosh.

Maybe man just maybe…. oh he also said that nothing happens probably til the deadline when teams are throwing in the towel or are desperate to make moves for other reasons!
