How to improve Ariza's offensive game

Here's hoping Rick Adelman is planning a nice sit down in front of a TV with Ariza soon, with plenty of game tapes to pore over.  What might Coach Sleepy have to say to Trevor?

Star-divide

  1. Don't take anymore contested jump shots.  Seriously, just don't.  You never hit them.
  2. Don't shoot 3PT shots unless you're wide open with your feet set.  If you're rushing it up, pass the ball away instead.  If you're shooting off the dribble, pass the ball away instead.  If you're doing anything but taking an open jump shot with plenty of time, pass it away.
  3. Stop hesitating when you get the ball.  Take a shot, drive to the basket, or pass it away, but decide immediately and commit.  You're thinking about it too much, and you're telegraphing your moves from a mile away.
  4. Stop dribbling in the paint.  You're not a great passer, but you're even worse at handling the ball.  Go for the shot/dunk or get the ball out of there, I'm tired of watching you turn it over.
  5. As long as you can get there without traveling or failing on point #4, go for the dunk more often.  It's one of your few offensive strengths, so play to it, and look for the opportunity.
  6. If you find yourself in a situation of any uncertainty or considering violation of any of the above rules, pass the @#$%ing ball away.  No offense, Trevor, but you're not our best option, or anywhere close to it.

Not that I can read Adelman's mind or anything.  Or that I'm putting words in his mouth.  These are just educated guesses, mind you.

No cursing in title. No pirated material, such as links to online game streams. Do not cut/paste entire sections of content from other websites. Thanks.

Maybe the Rockets should take some of the pressure off of Ariza

Like, as in having him think LESS and react MORE. You know, he’s only been in this system for a couple of months, and to see his offensive output double is pretty impressive thus far.

B^2
In Daryl Morey, Rick Smith and Ed Wade we (usually) trust.

I think

I think #3 gets remedied as the season continues… he’s only 35 games into figuring out how to be a more central offensive figure…

but yeah, #2 and #4 are probably never going to be improved on.

I think that’s really the biggest difference between Ariza and Battier, and why I enjoy watching the latter play so much more—ball handling and basketball instincts/intelligence of play. They’re both good, maybe great defenders, and both can shoot when they get a good look, but Ariza is horribly inefficient on offense, while Battier’s shot selection is approximately 10x better and he doesn’t make stupid decisions or turn the ball over every other play he’s involved in. It’s a shame, because Ariza is actually more athletic and has more upside. Maybe Battier needs to give him some private lessons.

imo...

the rockets would be better off with the not 100% Mcgrady as their SG in place of Ariza.
because:
1. he hits contested jump shots, more than trevor would.
2. he can create his own shots.
3. tracy won’t hesitate with the shot, him being the two time scoring champion in his prime.
4. i’m not sure about the TO stats but i’m certain that tracy has the better ballhandling.
5. tracy won’t hesitate to dunk it, he did it even on 1 leg (referrence to dunk in CHI last year) and supposably he can jump higher now than he did after working out with Tim Grover.
6. T-mac is not only one of the best scorers, he can also facilitate with his court vision and dish to other people. An average of 5 APG throughout his career speaks for itself. The not 100% Mcgrady might not be the first option, but definetely one of the first.

oh and for those of you that praise Arizas defense… Ariza averages about 1.8 SPG for the Rockets, Tracy averaged about 1.3 SPG in his seasons with the rockets (excluding this and last year). So i don’t really see the big difference.

And if you think Tmac is old and that Ariza is young and will develope, well the fact that the best shooting guard in this league are about tmac’s age, proves that he is eligible for that position. Besides Ariza could come off the bench and provide the extra energy.

again, this responds is just just my point of view. Please don’t take it as an offense.

here we go again

Tracy hasn’t been able to do #s 1, 3 and 5 on your list since 2005. And it’s not 2005 anymore.

I agree 100%. McGrady was coming back, playing a stinking 7-8 min per game and was shooting much better than Ariza. Budinger was hurt. Why not give Tmac more minutes? Why leave Ariza out there to toss up brick after brick. Ariza cannot even shoot FTs. The only thing Ariza does well is anticipate and make steals — he can play defense. Big deal. Remember, the Rocket essentially traded Artest for Ariza and now Artest is the leading candidate for defensive player of the year. On top of that, Artest can shoot the ball. Let’s admit it — everybody talks about the genius Morey but Ariza has been sort of a flop.

the rockets

are doing just what the didnt want tracy to do, or what most/all of you didnt want him to do, and thats slowing the ball down

Quote To Note:

“We’re a team searching for an identity in the fourth quarter. Until we find it, we’ll continue to struggle. That’s where we miss our go-to guys, when we need a for-sure bucket. We have to keep growing. This is a (heck) of a way to do it, but that’s what we have to do.”

sounds like a call for Super Mac!

tmac could be that kinda guy

and i really like him.
but he needs to work on the whole P.R/ not be an idiot and douche to your team. aspect of basketball.
he can ball but needs to realise the coach determines how things work..
he could be comming in with more mins right now but pissed away his chances

For the love of God

Tracy McGrady is not walking through that door ever again.

Let. It. Go.

by grungedave on Jan 7, 2010 5:13 PM CST reply actions

i agree

but that doesnt mean i cant pull a tracy and bitch abt it

by AlDe2356 on Jan 7, 2010 11:59 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, Tmac is NOT walking through that door. But why not? He is healthy. He is being paid. Why have all this ego crap between coach sleep and Tmac and Morey? Why allow it to hurt the team? Tmac is just a whole lot better than Ariza. And if the Rockets really want to trade Tmac then shouldnt they play him? Who will want Tmac if he is considered worse than Trevor “can’t shoot” Ariza? This is just stupidity on the part of Adleman and Morey. Coach of the Year? Manager of the Year? The nuts who benched a healthy hall of famer so they could play a guy who cannot shoot the ball?

he needs to build muscle mass, drive and dunk and get a foul ,quit pumping fake because he’s not good at, it create automatic TO if he does that.

From a Laker fan

This sounds almost exactly like his offensive limitations last year. Has he developed any semblance of a midrange game to compensate for some of them?

To secure ourselves against defeat lies in our own hands, but the opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.

How to fix Ariza's game

It is easy. Put him on the bench and give his minutes to Tracy McGrady. Nobody really knows if Tmac can return to anything near his former level but at least there is some potential. At least he can make free throws right now. And he can shoot RIGHT NOW. He is much better than Ariza. And there is always that small chance that Tmac, still a young man, can return to be one of the best players in the game. Trevor Ariza is simply NOT VERY GOOD.

by Gulder_Roy on Jan 11, 2010 4:57 AM CST reply actions

Easy.

Less shooting , more dunking.
Improve the Free Throws the same way Carl did.
Handle the ball less.
Move him to SF instead of SG.

Will probably do the job.

Also I kinda wonder, would a bit more muscle mass do him good or bad? I mean not to the point of slowing him down though.
