Marc Stein: Rockets pursuing trade for Bosh

I usually loathe these types of posts, but given it comes from a fairly credible source I thought it made sense to share it. Marc Stein at ESPN is reporting chatter around the Rockets targeting a trade with Toronto for a half-season with Chris Bosh believing they can entice him to stay in Houston with a new contract in the summer. Rumored packages are supposed to include some combination of Brooks, Scola, Ariza, and Landry. The story is here.

If the Raptors are seriously considering trading Bosh instead of letting him walk in the summer, their asking price cannot be that high given his impending free agency. Would a package of Ariza, Scola, and Cook (plus any min. salary player to match numbers) get it done? Do we need to throw in a draft pack? If the Rockets are confident of keeping Bosh past this year, we are really just trading Ariza for Bosh from 2010 and on, since Cook is just an expiring contract and it is up in the air whether it would be worth paying Scola what he will probably get on the open market with how Landry has played so far this year.

I have never been a huge fan of Bosh. He seems like that classic inbetween player, who is exceptionally good but is not a true franchise cornerstone but always seems to get paid like one. That being said, I trust Morey on player evaluation far more than myself and if he believes Bosh is worth the asking price I am 100% in favor. I think many on the site have noted this before, but a trade is likely the only way we can get an All-Star type player before the end of 2010-11 season. Some obligatory next season rosterbation:

PG: Brooks/ Lowry (if brought back)

SG: Budinger/Taylor

SF: Battier/Landry?

PF: Bosh/Landry

C: Yao/Andersen

We'd be a little thin at SG/SF but we would still have the draft and the mid-level to sort out some depth there. That being said, I wouldn't mind going into next season with that lineup.

Also interesting, Stein mentions this:

It's likewise believed that Houston can put a decent package together without insisting that McGrady's mammoth $22.5 million salary has to be part of it, which complicates matters even though it's an expiring deal because so many more players have to be included to make the trade math work.

It is then not of the question for Morey to look to put two blockbuster trades before the deadline, one for Bosh and perhaps another with McGrady. As unlikely as it may be, if Morey can also find a way to get a decent return on McGrady (Chris Paul anyone?), we could be looking at a vastly different Rockets team in the second half of the season, one which could be very competitive in the playoffs this year and a potential title challenger next year.

No cursing in title. No pirated material, such as links to online game streams. Do not cut/paste entire sections of content from other websites. Thanks.

Lets do it!

Great post! I think the trade offer would have to start with Landry, and either Battier or Ariza. Considering the other deals mentioned for Bosh have been Heinrich and Thomas from Chicago, or Beasley and parts from Miami, it will have to start with a young big like Landry. I’m willing to give 2 parts of the rotation plus a draft pick, but NO more, because they lose him this summer either way. If Morey could pull this trade off, then flip McGrady in a deal for either Kevin Martin or Iggy in Philly, he would be a bad a$$!!!!!

by FriscoRocketFan on Jan 8, 2010 4:52 PM CST reply actions

Hopefully

We do this trade without having to give up Landry. He is cheap, young and improving, and I think he and Bosh can play the 3/4 alongside Yao and the 4/5 when Yao is on the bench. Throw in David Anderson and Hayes, and that is easily the best rotation of bigs in the league.

by oelayat on Jan 8, 2010 5:18 PM CST reply actions

Landry can not play the 3 hes way to slow & he cant guard the perimeter.

Hes definitely a 4. Ariza was signed to 5 years so I dont think he’s gonna be part of that trade, could be wrong but I doubt it. Battier is probably one of the pieces the Raps would want for his leadership & defense. Landry cause he’s an awesome up & coming talent, we all know this with his play this year, Cook as a filler & perhaps a pick. DM must think very highly that Bosh is the future face of the Rockets! I like Bosh’s game & wouldn’t mind having him but I hope it doesn’t cost too much just in case he doesn’t stay! I heard on one Houston radio station(???) he’s said he wasn’t as high on playing in Texas like everyone would think.
Now lets just say Raps do a trade for someone besides Mac, whoever gets Macs contract will be a starter. If anyone can do this I think DM could especially with all the bad situations on some teams.Could you imagine what would happen if DM can dupe two teams for trades & bring in two superstars or potentials?! I’m anxiously waiting for the deadline to arrive! The Rockets are rebuilding the team for next year & the future so I dont see DM making any bad moves! Bosh & Iggy damn that would be a dream come true for me!

This is just a QUOTE from another discussion but I been looking for the actual Bosh quote, can't find it though.

“ESPN is saying Houston WANTS him but never said he’s likely headed anywhere….and Bosh already said he doesn’t want to play in Texas and that’s on record..”

If anyone can find the quote then please paste or link it. I’d be even more worried bout doin this trade if its true….

get ariza out

i know we only just signed him but we HAVE to get rid of him in order to sign bosh to an extension next year. i love ariza, but we are talking about chris freaking bosh. we would have the best frontcourt in the NBA by far (yao, bosh, landry/scola.) lets hope all they want is scola and ariza. id hate to part ways with landry, he is young and an offensive force in the paint. chris bosh is better and just as young. too many positives not to do this.

1) If no trade is made, then Ariza doesn’t make much of a difference, anyways. The Rockets wouldn’t have been able to offer a max contract even if they hadn’t signed Trevor.
2) If a trade is made, then this is totally irrelevant. He qualifies for the Bird exception, and given Les Alexander’s spending habits over the past few years, he’s probably willing to go over the tax next year.

So, um, just what we need, another PF.

I guess he can be a “C” in a very loose sense. But I also think that Carl Landry could come very close to Bosh’s production if he could move up to Bosh’s usage rate and minutes. And right now, there’s no reason to think Landry couldn’t do that.

by Xiane on Jan 9, 2010 12:39 AM CST reply actions

I agree completely

I don’t like the idea of going after Bosh at all, especially if it costs us Landry + somebody else. Look, Bosh might be an upgrade, but he’s a lot more expensive and I don’t think he’s that much of one. Furthermore, trading for him gets rid of pieces we could use to fill a greater need. When we already have all-star quality production out of PF that doesn’t make sense to me.

id give up scola and ariza for bosh plus cook and other junk... i dunno rights to joey dorsey? plus draft pick

greatest center pf grouping in the world. he is a guy who can come in and take over a game.. rockets could potentially go past maby the first round of the playoffs with him there..

by AlDe2356 on Jan 9, 2010 12:54 AM CST reply actions

no

Stop trying to trade away Luis Scola.

by grungedave on Jan 9, 2010 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

Let's go all Hubie Brown:

You’re Daryl Morey, alright, and the Lakers call you up and offer Kobe Bryant to you for Scola and McGrady (turns out, Jerry Buss has always secretly hated success, and Kobe has always harbored a passion for James Coney Island hot dogs, so he’s totally cool with this). Do you do it, Dave?

by Only_A_Lad on Jan 9, 2010 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

yes, but only if...

We make a secret pact with Scola to just re-sign with us in July.

by grungedave on Jan 9, 2010 12:14 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I like the way grungedave thinks! I dont wanna lose Scolandry!! (1/2 of the duo)

I like Bosh but we need a 2!! But like I said whatever Morey wants hes gonna get it, whatever Morey wants hes gonna get it,lol!

if you can get Bosh

without losing Landry, then I think the Rockets let Scola leave. A frontcourt of Yao/Bosh/Landry at the 4-5 would sound great to me.

by Metalate on Jan 9, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

I don’t want to see Scola leave but if they can get Bosh (and Bosh wants to stay and play for the Rockets) then I say go ahead and do it.

As long as they don’t have to gut the team (like trading Scola, Landry, and Brooks) to do it, I say go ahead.

But that just my opinion and we all know what that’s worth.

Fortunately, Morey’s running the team and not me. I trust he will do whatever is best…

btw d.m couldnt pull off 2 deals

if we got bosh we would have to just let tmacs salary expire in order to give bosh a max contract. im not even sure we can give him a max contract. so no cp3,bosh, yao type line ups in the near future… though with battier and ariza out there… i cant imagine losing a game where every1 is healthy with that big 3

by AlDe2356 on Jan 9, 2010 1:12 AM CST reply actions

He can pull off 2 deals the pieces are there but it also doesnt have to be 2 huge deals!

We are matching dollars, the equivalent if not less with Bosh & the 2nd deal would be for Tmacs big contract! So essentially all your doing is trading players but keeping roughly the same amount of $ on the books! If Les wants to,as he said at the end of last season, go into the tax for the right pieces he can. We’ll own the rights to whoever comes in so he can offer them whatever he wants. Its just up to him. Say we sign Iguodala well he’s under contract 5 more years done taken care of. Next Bosh (I wouldn’t mind keeping Scolandry though but whatever Morey wants) offer him big $$ since they have his rights but again the team would be in the tax & no doubt the surrounding players wont be big $ players! It would be similar to now with a ton of $ tied up in 2 players but it would be 3 & I doubt that would happen but it’s possible.

we are already in the luxury tax this year.

if we maintain our current salary we go even deeper into the tax cause the tax level is going to go down next year

by AlDe2356 on Jan 9, 2010 3:06 PM CST reply actions

We're only like $3 mill in luxury tax though thats way affordable for Les,

compared to other teams thats pocket change.

Ariza should be first to go

Ariza is definitely my first choice to go. He just hasn’t been productive on offense. Those other guys are too vital to our game. Adelman’s built our play around them.

by jazzcat108 on Jan 10, 2010 2:38 PM CST reply actions

battier isnt productive on offense and neither is chuckwagon

lets get rid of them too… oh and umm were going to get bosh right.
sweet! we become the raptors. all offense. who cares about this mythical thing called “D”?

ariza just got here. hes pretty good and with time will develop much more once he gets an ourside shot, and better bball IQ.
he isnt going to become tmac. dont expect him too. hes also pretty young.
id actually rather trade battier than ariza. i love battier but hes getting older and his skills can be replaced.
not saying i want him gone before you chew me out.

by AlDe2356 on Jan 10, 2010 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

I hate to see Scola go but I would trade Ariza for nothing. Ariza is a dog. Bosh can play. I wish they could do the Bosh deal and somehow keep Scola. Add Bosh for Ariza (who cannot play but seems to get all the minutes) and Tmac (who can play but is not allowed to play) and the team would be much better RIGHT NOW. And with Yao back next year, they would be serious contenders.

by Gulder_Roy on Jan 11, 2010 5:22 AM CST reply actions

i don't think the rockets really need a BOSH...

he’s just like landry, scola another PF.

i think the rockets could even let scola go, if he decides to explorer other in the nba, he has done enough for this team. That would unleash landry who, provided with enough minutes, can be really productive, maybe even an allstar.

and don’t forget about Joey Dorsey, who still hasn’t debute as a rocket since he entered the league. I believe after one more year in D-league he will develope some skills, and can contribute off the bench.

On the other hand the rockets have serious issues at the 2. They should consider keeping mcgrady or at least trade for some one that can contribute at a high level (Johnson/Iguodala/Mayo??/Martin)

so i’m thinking about a starting lineup like:

1. Brooks
2. Tmac or whoever we trade for (Johnson/Iguodala/Mayo??/Martin)
3. Battier/Ariza?
4. Landry
5. Yao

coming off the bench would be:
1. Lowry
2. Budinger
3. Ariza
4. Anderson/Dorsey?
5. Hayes

by swizzazn on Jan 11, 2010 3:58 PM CST reply actions

hays isnt a true center he can guard it but doesnt really play it

anderson would become our backup center. thats what he was brought in for.
hays goes to pf

by AlDe2356 on Jan 11, 2010 4:25 PM CST up reply actions

ouch

I’m really unconvinced that Anderson/Dorsey/Hayes is a competent backup frontcourt. You certainly have to assume that at a minimum, they will be careful with Yao’s minutes, so we need 3 solid 4/5 players at a minimum, and if Scola leaves without picking up anyone else inside, that sounds like trouble. I’m more convinced that Budinger will be a long-term piece than I am with Anderson.

by Metalate on Jan 11, 2010 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

anderson will bring scoring he isnt terrible and getting better all the time

scola leaving would be bad, but that means we added a big peice which changes everything

by AlDe2356 on Jan 11, 2010 11:47 PM CST up reply actions

T-Mac ain’t coming back…

… and unless Bosh has had a change of heart or the reports of him not wanting to play in Texas are false, the chances of either guy playing for Houston in the future are nil in my opinion…

I had to stop arguing with drunks, Steeler fans, and all other fools.
