No D = 3-9
The bottom line is we have not played great defense since we took the Lakers to 7 games in the playoffs. Yao has played pretty good this year but does not play enough to be a major factor. Before we got Brad Miller I said his defense was worse then Derek Andersen's, and I am sticking with it. Brad is great on offense but a liability on defense, and to his credit he should not have to start and play these extended minutes but Yao is injured again. When the games on the line great d can win games when our offense struggles. Average d like we are playing turns into last minute defeats like against the Wizards,Pacers,Spurs, and Raptors. When the games on the line we cant get any rebounds either. Jordan Hill deserves more minutes as well as Jeffries. Neither one is that good on offense, but they rebound well, and block shots. Bud still cant defend well enough to get extended minutes, and Battier still cant create any offense, so will Jermaine Taylor finally get a chance. We may also want to bring up Patterson and give him a try, because with our record so far you have to try everything. Before AB got hurt he was still turning the ball over, and playing inconsistently, but his offense will help out some, but he is still an liability on d. Scola and Martin have been playing well on offense but not great on d. When we start playing good team defense all four periods then we will start to win games, no matter if we have injuries are not.

We beat the Pacers
But yea your right about us needing to play good team defense. It is more about a team defensive philosophy rather than individual match-ups. You also said we should try something new like playing some of the guys that haven’t been playing much. Hill and Jeffries both need much more playing time especially over Chuck Hayes. Chuck hurts us much more than he helps. He is just too short at his position and doesn’t make up for it enough to get as much time as he has. Taylor should also get more playing time when we go on one of our scoring droughts. He just seems like one of those players that can get really hot on offense. He takes the ball to the rim and can create his own damn shot unlike most of our perimeter guys now ( or should I say he can create and score more effectively on his own than the others. They either create and screw up or just can’t create at all).
GO ROCKETS, GO TEXANS, GO ASTROS (EVEN THOUGH THEY SUCK)!!!
Yea u right
I meant the Bulls. The best teams in the league play great D, Boston and the Lakers.

We gotta slow the tempo for any chance of us getting better on D right now
We can’t take quick shots in 8 seconds anymore. We need to pound it inside with Scola and with Yao when he gets back. More movement needs to take place because we tend to stand around too much. We need better spacing for drives to the basket. We need to play a bit more zone and all front court players should crash the boards as soon as a shot is attempted. The second unit should be the ones doing the run and gun thing with the athletes we they have.

Its not looking good
now, but we have been in every game but the Thunder game. I see us turning this around and start to win some games. But for us to have a nice winning streak the defense will have to be on point. We must team rebound like you said, and cut down the turnovers. I said Derek Andersen, I meant David Andersen. We may see him more since he was just traded to the Hornets.

have always thought
that the run and gun is anathema to playing good d. You cheat a lot, staying aside your man instead of in front, eager to run the break. So with securing the defensive rebound as you tend to leave your man earlier to start running. Too much precision needed, knowing just the right moment when to leave your man.
IMO, run and gun on the o at the same time playing lock down on the d is simply impossible, you’d get lost in the momentum shifts. I think more than having players with low defensive quotients, the problem starts with a coaching philosophy that disproportionally values good team o over good team d.
So let me get this straight
The Rockets aren’t playing defense and we’re not winning? This is a ground shattering revelation and I need to sit back and recover. There haven’t been numerous threads about this and exhaustive coverage of our lack of defense before. What in the world will I do now that my world is shattering.
I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.
First of all
please tell me who finally got the League Pass, and you did not wear your baby bros penny loafers the day before we played the Wizards so you had no excuse to miss the game. I know you still watching Espn highlights and you still think you know something. We have been close in every game but one, so our d is not terrible, we just dont play it well at the end of games to pull out the victory. You are the genius who said Brad Miller is the answer when Yao is out, and he has not done anything spectecular. You said AB is so great but he continues to turn the ball over to much and play inconsistently. And you think if we kept Ariza we would have a better record. Please,,,continue to watch your highlights and continue to make your stupid comments and i will correct you like I always do.

You talk a lot of shit for a guy who should be in a helmet
Check the gamethreads, I’m right there every step of the way with the fellas on the board. The reason I didn’t go to the Rockets game was that my group of friends backed out last minute. I said Miller was a damn fine pick up and he hasn’t been used like he should be. Aaron is great, turnovers happen but with him on the floor point differential swings in our favor and opposing defenses can’t load up and deny our go to guys (Martin and Scola). Also, our defense has been atrocious. We average a hefty number of turnovers and generally only stay in games by trying to outscore opponents rather than stop them. There’s a reason we give up something near 107 points per game.
As for Ariza, New Orleans jettisoned several players and their major pick up was Trevor Ariza, their defense has gone on lock down and in general is pretty beast mode. Without Trevor our defense has deteriorated and as your late second half stats from last season would reveal, Ariza, if still here, would have been one hell of a combination (Citing specifically a triple double in a losing effort wherein Trevor’s full capability to click with Kevin Martin, ABZ, and Scola came together).
Also, they’re called streams, plenty of people on the board use em’. You mad cause I’m stylin’ on you?

I agree
But we have to tweak the rotations a little bit for that to happen. Our biggest problem is defending the paint. Except for Derrick Rose and Monta Ellis, no star players have really burned us. It has really been teams just attacking our paint because they know that we have no shot blocking. Another thing we need to do is get more deflections. We need to play those passing lanes better at least if our defense can’t get any worse.
GO ROCKETS, GO TEXANS, GO ASTROS (EVEN THOUGH THEY SUCK)!!!
Jeffries could help there don't you think?
Hey Les! We the people of H-Town want our logo and uniforms back!!!
