Yet Another Update: Knicks Deal Reached

ESPN Reporting:

The Rockets get Kevin Martin, Jordan Hill and Jared Jeffries from New York and will have the right to swap first-round picks with New York in 2011 as well as take on New York's 2012 first-round pick.

I don't know how I feel about taking Jeffries now. That probably eliminates the Rockets' cap space, making signing Scola/Lowry for a reasonable price this summer much more difficult.

And, yeah, if there's more updates, we'll try to put them here, I guess. It's getting kinda crowded.

yeah

I don’t get this…

we were much better off with Sergio and the absence of a Jeffries’-esque contract in 2011. Is a 2012 pick worth it??

by grungedave on Feb 18, 2010 12:40 PM CST reply actions

depends on level of protection, I guess

P&T was saying that the Rockets and Knicks were hung up on protection as of yesterday, with Walsh apparently being willing to only protect the first six spots in 2012.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

IMO need to trade them on 2010 draft night for a guaranteed lottery pick

even if it’s a two for one deal. i’m not counting on the knicks to stay this bad now they’re free to spend cash. walsh and d’antoni will get it done from now on.

by wayno on Feb 18, 2010 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

WOOOO!!!

so basically its same nyk deal as b4 except we got Kmart instead of Hughes and had to send of landry…i hate loosing lanry but i like the deal…who know..myb morey can now ship away cook and myb jeffries (doubt) for another good thing…cook and a pick for t. thomas…get it done!

from realgm… ESPN’s Chad Ford reports that the Knicks pick Knicks in 2011 is Top 1 protected while the 2012 pick is Top 5 protected.

remember

We can always trade away one/both of the picks to get cash. The Lakers sold the 30th pick in this last draft for $3 million. Maybe other trades involving picks/expiring contracts/Jeffries still in place?

Remember there’s always a buyout…

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

by ak2themax on Feb 18, 2010 12:42 PM CST reply actions

We get Knicks picks!!!!

I’m all for this.

1) we can still sign Scola, we always could, it just puts us into luxury tax.
2) having a $7 million expiring (Jeffries) during what I hope is a championship run isn’t bad at all. That’s how you get the Pau Gasol’s of the world.
3) KNICKS PICKS!
4) Sergio was great, but he still isn’t anyone we couldn’t get with part of the MLE.

if I were kinder,

I’d probably call this a “ballsy” move by Walsh and the Knicks. But I’m not kind, and so I’ll characterize it for what it is: an extremely low-probability gambit that will probably only hurt the knicks for a few more years.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

I love this deal for the Rockets

A young prolific scoring guard. And a young athletic PF. It did hurt to lose Landry but unfortunately, you have to give talent to get talent sometimes, and btw did I mention we got a 1st round draft pick, heck yea I love this deal.

by mob16151 on Feb 18, 2010 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

plus a pick swap

we can swap 2011 1st round picks (as long as it’s not the #1), & we can take the Knicks 2012 1st round if it’s not a top 5 pick

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

I care if he stays in Cleveland

cause if he does go to NYC, these drafts picks don’t have that much value anymore. Now I pray that Cleveland can get Lebron to sign a long term deal

by batman713 on Feb 18, 2010 1:11 PM CST up reply actions

Daryl Morey is incredible.

He can have this job until he dies, as far as I’m concerned. If he dies. I’m half-convinced he’s some kind of immortal basketball god in general manager form.

To be more serious: I don’t see Jared Jeffries being a problem. I think there’s a higher probability of Morey moving Battier, Ariza, or Andersen now for cap space, but even if we’re stuck with what we’ve got, I have the feeling we’ll still be able to bring back Scola and Lowry.

I just have a hunch Les is ready to spend, and that Kevin Martin qualifies as the “special player” he talked about.

by OremLK on Feb 18, 2010 1:02 PM CST reply actions

Can we?

Yes, of course. If Les is willing to pay, then the Rockets have both players’ bird rights, and so they can be resigned for up to 175% of what they’re currently paid. And there’s the MLE.

But that will probably put the Rockets into the luxury tax, and so either contract would cost much, much more (up to twice, depending on where, exactly, the tax line and cap are set next season).

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 1:47 PM CST up reply actions

Yep, exactly.

That’s what I meant when I said I have a hunch Les is ready to spend. He said he’d consider going into the tax for the “right player”.

by OremLK on Feb 18, 2010 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

I think Lowry will come cheap, Scola might demand a bigger contract. Houston has players on the bench that they could try to trade to clear up some more cap space.

Trade Cook, Anderson, Taylor, and Temple to the Nets for cash..haha

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 1:50 PM CST up reply actions

I like this a lot better!

I also like getting Hill. If he can develope it will be a very good trade.

by tyler2 on Feb 18, 2010 1:05 PM CST reply actions

correct

he’s coming in order for the salaries to all match up…i think his contract expires (along with K Thomas) after this season…

if kenny and hilton are still in package

rockets would be adding $3.5 million to their payroll and they’re over the tax.

by wayno on Feb 18, 2010 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

neither of them were in the deal

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

by The Night Owl on Feb 18, 2010 1:11 PM CST up reply actions

Well, looks like it's Armstrong & Hilton

My girl will be pregnant...

with Morey’s kid. I’m making that happen as of 1:04 (CST). Seriously can this guy do NO wrong?!?!? The concept of a buy-out on one of those contracts should really move things along or waiving 2 of em. I don’t think we’ll ever see Armstrong play a single min. But this has future written all over it!
1.) K. Mart
2.) YOUNG Jordan Hill
3.) Yao Ming back next season AND……
4.) PICKS out the ass!?!?!?

excuse me while I change my current clothing, I seem to have excess jizz……

Carl Landry is my father.....I know he can do it!

by I_BLEED_ROCKETS on Feb 18, 2010 1:19 PM CST reply actions

So in this deal

We get:

Kevin Martin
Jordan Hill
Jared Jeffries
Hilton Armstrong
Swap with NYK’s 2011 1st round pick (if it’s not a #1) & 2012 1st round pick (if it’s not a top 5)

Has Daryl Morey become the supreme deity in Houston?

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

by The Night Owl on Feb 18, 2010 1:23 PM CST reply actions

Crazy...

I can see that JJ has a big contract, but I just read that he is a taller version of Hayes. If that is true, and he is a better defender than a scorer, than it would make sense to put him in at Center and see how he does.

Houston has a bunch of players they can trade or even release to clear cap space. Anderson, Taylor, Cook, their rights to the European player if that helps with relieving cash.

Plus, even if the Knicks do make the play offs, Houston can still sell those draft picks for cash and use that cash to sign Scola, which I think should be their #1 priority right now.

I will miss Landry, but I am curious to see how Martin & Brooks play together.

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 1:26 PM CST reply actions

I completely concur...

Brooks and Martin will be great together. Both young and from what I read, Martin is a hell of a passer and creating shoots for others.

I wanna keep Llull(sp)

Apparently he’s been looking good in Spain.

by mob16151 on Feb 18, 2010 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

Only saying...

I want Houston to sign Scola, he is too good to let walk. Battier is a good defender and can shoot the 3, but I like to watch Budinger hit those 3s than Battier.

Cook, Anderson are expendable, I am sure some of the other players Houston received are as well. I hope Houston can still clear some more cap space to make a run at another player they want and not be locked down by this trade.

Who comes off the bench? Landry was the only offensive scorer…who is it now?

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

I like the deal.

Has Jordan Hill been playing ? Don’t know much about him.

I dont know much about Hill or Armstrong. I know Armstrong is a big body guy — maybe a center? I think Jefferies might start at Center, an upgrade over Hayes who is a very good defender and has a bit more offense than Hayes.

This helps Houston actually on the defensive side. Jefferies does the things that Battier does that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. If RA wanted to go D: Jefferies, Battier, Hayes, Ariza, Lowry!

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 1:47 PM CST up reply actions

Armstrong is awful

Hill is a prospect.

Until Yao gets back, Chuck will be the starting center.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 1:48 PM CST up reply actions

If Armstrong is awful — I am sure DM can trade him off to clear some cap space…now that these guys are here, what are their contract numbers? Whose contract expires and whose do we have to pay??

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

If Armstrong is awful — I am sure DM can trade him off to clear some cap space

He comes off the books at the end of the season, regardless. He’s included because he makes the numbers work. My point is that I seriously doubt he’ll do anything but join the Brian Cook Towel Waiving Society at the end of the bench.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 1:55 PM CST up reply actions

what are their contract numbers? Whose contract expires and whose do we have to pay??

Martin is owed about $11 million next season, Jeffries is owed about $7 million, Hill makes something less than $3 million next season, and everyone else expires.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

so if Houston doesn’t re-sign any of the expiring contracts from the trade and anyone else, how much do they have to work with to try signing Scola and Lowry?

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 2:37 PM CST up reply actions

depends on what happens to the cap

The current projection is about $53 million. Right now, the Rockets’ cap number for the 2011 season sits at about $58 million. So all the Rockets will have will be the MLE. As I said before, however, the Rockets have the Bird rights to Lowry and Scola, and so they can go over the cap (up to 175% of their current salary) to sign them.

The Luxury tax will probably sit at about $65-$69 million (that’s a guess, btw), so the Rockets have some room before they have to worry about the tax. But that can be eaten up pretty quickly, particularly since the Rockets have to sign their first round pick (if they want to sign their second, they’ll have to use part of the MLE).

So the Rockets will have about $5-6 million to sign someone with the MLE, and otherwise they can offer up to $5.9 million on Scola and $3.6 million on Lowry. Whether or not they “can” do that depends on your definition of “can.”

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 3:48 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm...

Sorry for being slow, but what does MLE stand for and what are Bird Rights?

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

The MLE stands for “Mid-Level Exception.” Most teams are, in any given offseason, over the soft cap, so they can’t sign any new free agents. Every team, however, receives a Mid-Level Exception. Exceptions allow a team to go over the cap to sign a free agent. The Mid-Level Exception basically adds up to an average NBA salary.

So every team can use the MLE on one or more players, even if they are currently over the cap. For example: last summer, the Rockets were over the cap, and so all they could use to sign free agents (and, technically, 2nd-Round draft picks) was the MLE. As it turned out, they ended up receiving a second MLE from the league because of Yao’s injury (the IPE – injured player exception), which they used to sign Ariza. Their actual MLE was used to sign Budinger, Andersen, and Taylor.

Bird Rights are named for Larry Bird. It’s much more complicated, but basically it works like this: players who have played for one team for three or more seasons or who have played on one contract for more than three seasons have Bird rights. Their teams can go over the cap to sign them to extensions.

Jared Jeffries Charge Machine

As of last week
Charge leaders:Jared Jeffries – 41 total charges – 1.27 per 40 min
The ultimate defensive specialist. Charges are a big reason why Jeffries ranks sixth in the league in defensive plays per 40 minutes.

This is why I like him. More defense on the team while someone like Martin doesnt have much.

Jeffries, Battier, Ariza, Martin, Brooks — 3 of the best perimeter defenders.

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

The starting lineup and rotations are going to be very interesting now...

Here’s mine:
PG-Brooks, Lowry, Temple
SG- Martin, Budinger
SF-Battier, Ariza
PF-Scola, Jeffries, Armstrong
C-Hayes, Andersen, Hill

I put Ariza in the 2nd group because I think Ariza’s offense is more important there with Landry gone now. The entire 2nd group can run and Ariza, Lowry, and Jeffries provide good defense. I also think we will see less of Brooks and Lowry on the floor together because Martin will get his minutes and he’s not a 3.
