But doing this much, with McGrady's contract? Not merely moving it for similarly-expiring parts and a possible pick? Getting Martin? The high end that could give you the second pick in the 2011 draft and the sixth pick in the 2012 draft? Morey, you magnificent bastard. This was a masterstroke. A patient, well-timed, masterstroke. You knew he'd wait until February. You knew he'd wait until trade deadline day. You knew he'd make it work. Goodness, gracious, sakes alive.
-Kelly Dwyer, pretty much repeating what he said last year at the deadline with more emphasis.

Now its time to play ball, how soon will these guys get on the court? Who can we see play and who will sit?

I'm Scared Now

Because Morey’s genius has been on display for everyone to see, no one is gonna want to trade with him because they know they are gonna get robbed!! Haha he makes other GMs just look childish. Now it’s time to win!!!! Can’t wait for K-Mart on Saturday night. What’s the lineup gonna look like?

by jroberts5 on Feb 18, 2010 4:29 PM CST reply actions

i think everyone in the nba knows about morey

but the thing is, the knicks got what they wanted which was cap space. morey knew what they wanted and said essentially he would help them chase lebron but it would cost them. if ny does get lebron this move wont be as badly talked about. if they dont, its a severe disappointment.

Actually, I think while he always "gets the best of teams"

That he never leaves them hurt. Every team he deals with is getting something they want. It just happens to be that they want less than the Rockets

I think Martin, Jeffries will come off the bench for now. I would like to see how Hill does as well.

1: Brooks, Ariza, Hayes, Battier, Scola
2: Martin, Temple, Bud, Jeffries, Hill

BTW, I think Conroy is better than Temple.

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 5:06 PM CST reply actions

I doubt Martin will come off the bench

he’s played under Adelman before – it shouldn’t be a big leap for him to get back into his offense.

otoh

one of the numerous plans last season was for Artest to come off the bench as the sixth man, while T-Mac and Battier stayed in the starting lineup. Battier’s ankle and Tracy’s knee prevented that, but it was the original goal.

So, I wouldn’t be too surprised if Martin started off as a bench player. Can’t imagine that holding true forever, though.

i think hill is going to the d-league.

i’d be surprise to see him suit up.

Well Jeffries is hurt a bit now.

So if we still do a 9 man rotation then we have Brooks/Ariza/Hayes/Battier/Scola/Martin/Bud/Andersen/Temple(Lowry). We make it 10 men and Hill gets some PT, or he can fight with Andersen.

by Moondebah on Feb 18, 2010 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

I think Temple's 10 days are up

That’s why we were able to trade away 3 and get 4. Otherwise we wouldn’t have room in the roster

i cannot believed i ever doubted morey after butler and haywood got traded.

this is just an absolute steal. two knicks first round picks, that alone is amazing. then bring in potentially the next chris bosh, get a young scoring wing in martin. perfect.

don't know if anyone else has pointed this out yet,

but (at least according to Pelton) the trade also got the Rockets out from under the tax this season, possibly saving them about $9.5 million. That’s a lot of money, folks.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 18, 2010 6:47 PM CST reply actions

Wow.

Just amazing. We’re over next year, but can use some exceptions and so forth to sign our own guys anyway, as I understand it.

So it looks like we've already had our "Summer of 2010" acting now, while rates are low.

And I’d be very surprised if this team can’t make some noise in the playoffs.

I’ll miss Landry, one of my favorite Rockets, and Dorsey, who was, minute for minute, the most amusing Rocket ever, but what a deal. What a freaking deal!

Amazing

It seems the Rockets always make the right moves dating back to the Clyde Drexler trade, well the only blemish was not drafting Rashard Lewis but rather Bryce Drew and two other first round picks.

Congrats to you, Rockets fans!

You did make out like bandits on this one. I expect when the team is back at 100% next season, you are really going to wear the league out at both ends of the court. Martin is a great player, solid citizen, and will excel under Adelman.

We’re very pleased in Sacramento to get Landry, but it is definitely bittersweet. You’ll have a lot of people out here rooting for the Rockets in the playoffs until we get back there in 2011-2012.

Good luck, Kevin!

We'll be watching the Kings too.

An exciting young team, and Carl Landry is a great player, and by all accounts, one of the nicest people around. We’re going to miss him, but he needs to be a starter somewhere.

We’re pretty hopeful about the Rockets next year, with the usual injury caveat, I suppose. But yes, it’s going to be hard to guard that lineup if everyone is there.

More congratulations from Sacramento

We shall miss Speedracer (Speed for short), but from everything I’ve heard Carl Landry is a nice addition to Sacramento. i think this is a win-win trade for both teams. Kevin wasn’t being used to his fullest over here and was having trouble gelling with the young guys. He should be perfect for Houston, and it should end Ariza from chucking up so many shots.

God, this paragraph just sounds beautiful
And I’d be tripping balls right now if the Knicks had a GM like Morey. Jeez, he played Walsh and Geoff Petrie like hand puppets. Talk about making something out of nothing. He turns the franchise-killing McGrady injury last year into one of the most efficient perimeter scorers in the NBA, and all it cost him was former second round pick Carl Landry (which is a tough loss mitigated by the fact that they just got Jordan freaking Hill). Not only that, kids, but the salary albatross that he absorbed for all his trouble is a decent player who will contribute to Houston for the next year and a half with his good defense and unselfish play, making him a valuable expiring contract next year.

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

I've just been giggling all day.

I mean, I hated to lose Landry, but WOW. One of the best SG in the league – an efficient assassin. The 8th pick in the draft – an athletic long PF. A big defender. A first round pick. A pick swap.

And what else? A treasure chest? A faberge egg? An original Van Gogh?

If you hadn't already seen the SB Nation Trade Grader,

they summed it up nicely:

Got rid of Tracy McGrady’s $23 million contract, acquired approximately 18 future first round draft picks, Kevin Martin, Jared Jefferies, A fleet of Maybachs, AND a lifetime supply of cashmere socks for Daryl Morey’s sensitive feet.
And that doesnt even mention Hill.

Hadn't seen that.

I missed the cashmere socks and Maybachs. They missed the pirate treasure, Faberge egg, and Van Gogh painting.

Plus it’s with mixed emotion that I can say “Goodbye Tracy McGrady”. Those emotions being a mix of joy and awe.
