When he says sign & Trade, who would that be? Battier, Cook, Anderson, Taylor?? I hope not Aaron Brooks

by DizzyKC on Feb 18, 2010 10:09 PM CST reply actions

Possibly a mid level free agent and package it with draft picks to get a big timer

but Battier, Andersen, and Taylor are all under contract next year so that technically wouldnt be a sign and trade.

simple

Almost certainly Battier and/or Jeffries

Rockets were looking for a playmaker and backup C before trade

Does Martin fill that playmaker role?

I thought I read Morey saying (post-trade) this draft is deep with bigs. Rockets add a backup C via the draft? Do they cash in NY’s potential future lottery picks to move up for a guaranteed lottery pick in 2010?

probably would be

a combination of players like Scola, Battier, picks (maybe ours, the NY ones, or both), cash, maybe Brooks for a premiere big a la Bosh, since I think we’re set at the SF (or at least Morey is thinking so), and there isn’t great PG availability this summer; that really only leaves an upgrade at the big. I have a hunch that Morey likes the idea of starting Lowry, and sacrificing Brooks for something special. Who knows, maybe Martin tears it up thru this season and we trade him. That’s the one thing making me apprehensive about buying his jersey, which i would love to buy the road alternate of.

I suppose it's possible.

But I’m not sure what’s wrong with this team. Particularly if Jordan Hill works out.

Meh, we're very well balanced, but I still don't think we can battle the Lakers, even with Yao.

Right now, with Yao, I see us in the Denver-Dallas tier and could possibly defeat LA, but they’d clearly be the favorites. And then you’ve got Cleveland, who I think is even stronger (I have them winning it all if things continue as they have been)

I disagree.

This is a LOT more firepower than we brought against the Lakers last year. A lot more height as well.

Yes, you miss Landry’s points, that’s for sure. But you pick up those points from another spot, and get a bit more out of Scola.

With Yao? I like our chances against anyone. We can put out a terrifying “lockdown” team – Jeffries isn’t a scrub, despite his portrayal as one.

You know what? I’m gonna write this up in greater depth…whee.

by Xiane on Feb 19, 2010 12:14 AM CST up reply actions

Perhaps, but do you think we can contend now without Yao?

Really, without Yao, we’re preparing for a final showdown with LA next year, though this year will be crucial as a test run. A lot can change between now and then, but I doubt the Lakers can improve that much as even they have limits on how much they can spend, and God knows what Morey will have done by then. And Kobe is going to get even older, always a plus. I think it is definitely possible we will be serious contenders next year, and this year we could even be a second round team, but I don’t think we’re quite there yet as of now.

by Barragan on Feb 19, 2010 12:25 AM CST up reply actions

No, not now.

I think with Yao, yes, because there’s just no way to cover that lineup.

But now? Well, it’s a real question, but I’d think our depth is very dangerous in the right matchup. We’ve now got something like 4 stoppers – Battier, Ariza, Jeffries, Hayes and maybe Lowry. (Though how a point would actually be scored by that lineup beggars the imagination. Lowry could drive and get fouled, I guess.) But Jeffries can cover almost any spot – you can really wear a guy down with one defender after another. There’s also firepower on the bench, still, with Budinger, Lowry, Andersen and maybe Hill.

This team just got deeper, and that is trouble for an opponent in the playoffs.

I dunno, the Rockets got a lot bigger, and they got a scoring wing of a caliber we were never going to land this summer. How many really top FAs are there this summer? Well, about 6-8 teams have room to sign them not to mention their current clubs. Somebody is going to lose out in a huge huge way- who will? Somebody is going to get a very expensive Rudy Gay, or David Lee instead of D Wade or something. That somebody won’t be us. We made our move already, with the possibility we can land one of the “whales” with the right offer in a sign and trade.

Who got waived?

You can only have 15 players.
The Rockets were at 15,traded out 3,took back 4. For that to work one of the original 15 had to be waived. Was it Temple,or was Cook bought out?

by Tisbee on Feb 19, 2010 12:09 AM CST reply actions

Probably Cook gets waived

Since we can’t trade him, he has no more value at all for Houston, and we need Temple as a third-string PG, particularly with Lowry out. We can just pay Cook the rest of his contract and have him go home and leave the NBA.

Don't know yet.

I'd be surprised

We might buy-out Cook (no reason not to at this point)
and we might also waive Temple after this weekend.

by grungedave on Feb 19, 2010 12:47 AM CST up reply actions

somehow,

I doubt Cook will accept a buyout. Why give up money when it’s so unlikely you’ll get picked up by another team? They’ll have to either cut him or let him expire.

As I recall, Temple’s second 10-day contract is up soon, and so the Rockets will probably go back to Conley.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 19, 2010 9:04 AM CST up reply actions

i'd rather see temple than conroy.

conroy is a much much better passer but temple fits the lowry role a bit better. he attacks the basket well and uses his long arms to finish. plus it seemed that he ran the offense a bit better than conroy did. they are both equally good 3pt shooters.

I agree - I was more impressed by Temple than Conroy.

It looks like Conroy has more talent maybe, but he made enough questionable plays that I’d rather have Temple, who seems steadier.

by Xiane on Feb 19, 2010 11:18 AM CST up reply actions

Either way

The Rockets can’t offer Temple a third 10-day contract w/o signing him for the rest of the season, which they’d probably rather not do. Right now, neither Temple nor Conroy are listed on the Rockets’ official roster, so we’ll see what happens.

by Only_A_Lad on Feb 19, 2010 11:24 AM CST up reply actions

Under the Cap

Rockets can afford to pay Cook the remaining portion of his salary w/no discount.
Just curious.(And I wonder if Armstrong should bother looking for someplace to stay.)

by Tisbee on Feb 19, 2010 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

I think Armstrong will be around.

He’s just about seven feet tall. This is useful to us, as so many have pointed out. Of course, he might just be so awful that it doesn’t matter. Hard to say really, until we can check these guys out on our own. You just never know.

Portland absolutely loathed Channing Frye, thought he was worthless, but he’s been devastating in the PHX attack.

by Xiane on Feb 19, 2010 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

who said anything about a discount?

At this point, Les might as well just cut Brian Cook a check for the full value just to clear up a roster spot.

by grungedave on Feb 19, 2010 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

I suspect we might see that.

Significant gravitas shortfall expected in 2010.

Ya, it's not a buyout, it's a waiver

And then they pay what they owed and get back to 15
