Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Forget about the Cavs and Dallas the ROCKETS are the real deadline winners

I got to give props to GM Daryl Morey, he really pulled off a great trade for the Rockets.  We essentially gained one star and three solid players for only Carl Landry.  Don't get me wrong, Landry will be missed especially the season he is having this year.  I would much rather see Scola go than Landry but you have to lose some to gain some.  Getting Kevin Martin was a great addition.  At just 27, Martin is a proven 20 plus scorer and should fit right into the Rockets' system.  He is similar to T-Mac in that he needs the ball to score, but he is a much better shooter.  Martin also played with a solid play maker in Tryeke Evans and that experience should help him adjust to playing alongside Aaron Brooks.  In addition to Martin, the Rockets also get Jordan Hill , Hilton Armstrong, and Jared Jeffries.  Jeffries is mostly likely going to take Landry's spot in the rotation.  He is no Carl Landry by any means, but he is a solid contributor and at 6'11 gives the Rockets some size that they desperately need.  Jordan Hill is unproven in the NBA, but he is young and talented and could potentially develop into a solid forward for the Rockets if they intend to keep him.  Hilton Armstrong is just the throw in to make the deal work.  However by getting Jeffries, Jordan, and Armstrong, the Rockets now actually have some size, which was another weakness of the team since Yao Ming's injury.  Overall this was a great trade.  This allows either Battier or Ariza to come off the bench and should take pressure of Ariza to be a scorer that he really is not.  Also, if Yao Ming can come back healthy next year and with maybe one or two off season additions, the Rockets could be right back to TITLE contention.  Brooks, Martin, and Yao should form a respectful scoring trio, maybe add another scorer off the bench the Rockets should be a very good team in 2011.

I know somebody probably already post something about the departure of Tracy McGrady, but I have to say its still sad to see him go.  Sure the Rockets are better off now adding Martin, but be realistic Kevin Martin is good but he is never going to be Tracy McGrady.   You can argue all you want but when he was in Houston, Tracy McGrady is a top ten Rockets of ALL TIME.  Go ahead and find me ten Rockets ahead of Mac.  I will give you my list for you to debate on

1.  Hakeem Olajuwon - enough said

2.  Calvin  Murphy - one of the great point guard of his time old school look him up if you don't know

3.  Clyde Drexler - again enough said

4.  Tracy McGrady

5.  Ralph Sampson

6.  Moses Malone

7.  Yao MIng

8.  Rudy Tomjanovich

9.  Otis Thrope

10. Steve Francis - Don't hate he was good when he was here
In the end, Tracy McGrady gave the Rockets fans plenty to cheer about, his 13 points in 25 seconds, leading the team to 22 straight wins, his all-star game performance in Houston.  Yes he will always be known as a great Rocket that can't get his team through the first round of the playoffs.  But you can't put all the blame on him.  A new era has started for the Rockets and Tracy McGrady will be missed.

Plus, he was the primary scoring option in Sacramento.

Especially with Yao next year, he’ll find better shots and openings since opponents usually double-team Yao. Also, he’ll perform a lot better under Coach Sleepy.

I could score just by stepping onto the court.

I’m also a one man fast break.

Significant gravitas shortfall expected in 2010.

well you dont nessessarily always have to have the ball to score

i think what hes talking about is he scores by running the offense through him.
battier helps score by setting screens running plays ect.
it also refers to how long each player holds the ball.

a cutting wing doesnt nessessarily dominate the ball, while players like tmac score by beating their man off the dribble and running iso plays. and generally hold onto the ball alot longer

Thank you ALDe2356

Thank you!! I appreciate people who actually know something about basketball that comments rather than idiots that never even touch a basketball in their lives talking like they know what they are talking about.

wow...you know nothing about basketball

if you know anything about basketball you will know what i meant. There are some players that dominate the ball to score like Kobe, Lebron, Melo, T-mac, and Martin being one of them. And there are some players that don’t need to dominate the ball the score for example Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, Reggie Miller. You don’t know anything don’t comment please.

wow

i love kenny smith and robert horry, but you put them as two of the TOP TEN rockets of all time. They are career ROLE players.

but

somewhere i wanna find nostalgic spaces for Robert Reid and Allen Leavell, even though, statistically, they dont match the other guys on this list.

hey

anybody like Rick Barry, Elvin Hayes, Sam Cassell? I was gonna say robert horry. What about Rick Adelman? Too far back huh?

Hayes had his best years in Washington

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

If they were all coming out today .. in this years draft … and somehow you knew how well they would be able to play, the order they would be picked would be:

1. Hakeem Olajuwon
2. Charles Barkley
3. Mose Malone (he was a center … nuf said)
4. Elvin Hayes
5. Tracy McGrady
6. Scottie Pippen
7. Yao Ming
8. Clyde Drexler (yes, below Tmac)
9. Ralph Sampson (somebody would take him cause he was tall)
10. Calvin Murphy – maybe … but he was tiny so he probably would not get picked this early

Maybe we shouldn’t include guys like Barkley, Pippen, Hayes but they were Rockets for a short time and they were super great at one time too.

Otis Thorpe

The Otis Thorpe mention was a great choice for the list of greatest Rockets. He was a consumate team player who made a tremendous sacrifice to be the power forward lined up next to Olajuwon. The year before Thorpe became a Rocket he had his best season, averaging 20.8, 10.2, 3.2 ASSISTS. Based on these stats, he was poised for stardom but when teamed with Olajuwon he took a backseat and never complained when he was asked for the toughest defensive and rebounding assignments.

Also, Thorpe was an iron man. In his first 10 years, he only missed playing the full 82 games twice registering a 75 game and 72 game seasons in his first decade.

I generally agree with the list but T-Mac can’t be on it for the simple reason that he never won a playoff series. I would put Horry and Elie above T-Mac just because those guys knew what to do to win. Horry’s toughness was underrated. Elie would punch through bricks to get the win.
