Quit Freaking Complaining People!

I don't get us Rockets fans sometimes.  For three years most people have been clamoring for the Rockets to make a move and finally trade Tmac.  And finally, after Tracy missing the majority of the past 2 seasons with 2 knee surgeries, the ladder being the dreaded microfracture surgery, Morey, somehow managed to move him for A 2nd tier SG, 6'7" Kevin Martin, the #8 pick in the 2009 draft, Jordan Hill, who is 6'10" and compared to Amare by Dantoni, possibly the #2 pick in the 2011 draft and # 6 pick in the 2012 draft.  But wait there's more so I needed a period to avoid a run-on.  A 6'11" player in Jared Jeffries  who can guard all 5 positions on the floor depending on the player (he came into the league as a SG), and has a very valuable expiring contract next year, and a 6'11" C, Hilton Armstrong, who was basiclly a flyer with an expiring contract this year, but brings size on a previously size challenged team, and maybe could be a cheap, young, backup for Yao.  And the only piece  of our core that we gave up to make this work was Carl Landry

Now I LOVE Carl Landry, but give credit to Morey for selling high.  Landry's value was never going to be higher than it is now because with Yao out, he is free to operate inside, and be the primary scoring option when in the game, and he's underpaid on a 3 mil per year contract.  That was not going to be the case a year from now.  Next year is a contract year for him, he was going to have a good year, and command a huge pay raise in the summer of 2011.  We were not going to tie up 16 mil, or more, for him and Scola who is due a pay raise this year, especially when we desperately needed a SG and backup Center for Yao.  And Carl does have his weaknesses too.  It's not for a lack of effort, but he is not a good defensive player, he simply doesn't have much awareness on that end.  Not to mention his inability to get defensive rebounds.  He attacks the offensive glass, but just does not seem to want it as much on the defensive glass.  Don't believe me, go look at his numbers.  Landry should be averaging more than 5 boards per game.  Sacramento is setting themselves up for dissappointment thinking he is going to suddenly become Boozer or Howard on the boards.  They already had a good young PF in Jason Thompson, and it looks as if PF may be Donte Green's best position as well, so know they are trotting out all 3 of them in the starting lineup, and none of them can defend the paint.

The bottom line is that Most of us would have traded Tracy for a $5 Footlong and a bag of chips.  And had we did that we would have used our cap space to resign Scola and Lowry, reached on a mid level exception guy like Ariza again, and welcomed Yao back.  And we would have ended up in the same place we've been the last 5 years, which is a mid to late seed playoff team, with no real chance of being a true contender.  That my friends is mediocrity.  In order to take those last steps, sometimes it requires taking a small step backwards, and what better year to do it than this one.  There is already a built in excuse, and the Rockets were nothing more than 1st Rd fodder at best.  Now they have options, with or without a dominant Yao.  And did I mention, we finally have a player whose natural position is SG.

Kevin Martin is a 1st Tier Shooting gaurd

The only people that are complaining are people who really don’t follow the NBA and don’t know how good this kid is. Hes been on the kings so it is understandable, however, he could just as easily been on a contending team and regarded just as a high as other super stars. Give him a month.

When he says 2nd tier

I think he means it as a complement. As in one tier below Kobe and Wade. That’s fair, right?

by jack_ on Feb 24, 2010 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

That's exactly what I meant

I love the K-Mart acquisition, and I would go as far as to say that he is in the 2nd tier of the entire league. With the first tier guys consisting of only Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Howard, Anthony, Dirk, Paul, Nash, Bosh, D-Williams, and Yao (When Healthy). In other words, he isn’t going to be the best guy on the championship team, but he sure is a good #2 on any team. Unless he’s the best guy on a team like the ’04 Pistons.

At the risk of sounding like I know nothing

I’d take Durant over LBJ if starting from scratch.

I probably would too.

More of a personal preference than anything else.

I'm confused

Who here is complaining? The trade was excellent.

If you aren't complaining then I'm not directing it towards you

But if you are a Rockets fan then I assume you read the Chronicle, Clutch City, and this website. And if so, then surely you’ve heard the “woe is us crowd” on each of those sites. This is going to take some time, it won’t happen over night. Give this team the rest of the season, and management time to finish putting the team together, and getting Yao reintergrated, and they’ll be fine.

The ladder of which…

This trade was a double-fleecing

You’re right about the Greene/Landry/Thompson trifecta. We all saw how 3 PFs worked out (the Miami Massacre). You can’t run it when you want to have a team all about spacing (for Evans and Udrich).

It takes time for a team without any interior physicality to get better. Remember, when Yao comes back this team will be better. Hill needs to play tonight.

As for New York, I think that the biggest names to move will be the 2nd tier guys (Boozer, Amare and Joe Johnson), and I see Boozer in Miami, and Amare and Rudy Gay going to New York. Definitely not D-Wade/LeBron. As for JJ, I’m not sure.

Oh, and I hate throwing salt into the wound, but McGrady got hurt again…I’m starting to almost feel bad for the guy.

In Daryl Morey, Rick Smith and Ed Wade we (usually) trust.

Sorry

I was in a rush typing this because I should have been working. But anyway, I think everyone who takes the time to read this will get the point.

Don't be surprised if we get a Bosh, Johnson, or Stoudemire

this summer assuming they opt out of their contract which they will. We can do a sign and trade considering we have a few 1st round picks. I would love our lineup to be Brooks, Martin, Yao, Scola, and Bosh.

I Think

you have this place confused with Clutchfans. That place has been whiner central since the trade…not really much of a change, to be honest.

True story...

I stopped reading it. Too many ‘bring back Von Wafer’ and ‘trade T-Mac for the Lebron and the Holy Grail’ threads to have to sift through to read something interesting and educated.

How is Ariza....

still in a Rockets uniform? I mean that jokingly of course, but damn boy – start playing!

by idlewatcher on Feb 25, 2010 12:10 PM CST reply actions

He's hurt.

But really, critiquing this Rockets team is like critiquing the opening credits of a movie. The points may be valid, but the show hasn’t even started.

There's an exception to that rule...

…any time you see Gilbert Gottfried’s name in the opening credits, you can pretty much press “eject”.

I hate scrolling down the homepage and seeing that post about bringing back Von Wafer

and people say wait for Martin to get used to Yao. They’re also forgetting about Ariza, Budinger, Taylor, Hill, Jeffries, Armstrong, and Andersen, even though they play the same position.

by joshsm07 on Feb 25, 2010 11:19 PM CST reply actions

They're pretty flexible, actually. I think that's the point. The Rockets can field a pretty big team next year except for PG.

Budinger and Ariza can play the 2 or 3. Taylor is pretty much pure SG. Jefferies can play almost anywhere and defend pretty well unless the guy is just enormous (cf Howard, Dwight). Andersen can go 4-5. Armstrong is apparently playing “Brian Cook” at the moment.

Yeah, Martin sux

Only one of the most efficient scorers in the league. The Rockets should waive him and send him back to the kings.

complaint

I have a complaint. People say the only thing we traded was Landry. Nonsense. Tmac’s expiring contract was potentially as valuable to the Rockets as to the Knicks. It could mean Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Johnson, Amare … all much better than Martin. Also, Tmac seems to be coming back. And Tmac says he will sign for low $ with NY if NY gets two stars. Well, the Rockets have Yao and could have got one more star .. so maybe the Rockets could have kept Tmac (at lower salary), used the Tmac money to get Bosh and then Tmac return to health. You would have Yao, Bosh and Tmac on the same team with all these other pieces, including Landry.
