Game 56: Rox vs. Magic

Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets, Feb 24, 2010 7:30 PM CST

Quick preview: the last time the Rockets met Orlando, they lost by 25. Somewhat ironically, that game was T-Mac's 2010 Season debut, while this will be Kevin Martin's starting debut.

Ariza and Lowry are out, which means that the Rockets already-iffy defense is even more suspect. They're facing a legit contender: top-10 offense, one of the best defenses in the game. The Rockets are going to need a pretty phenomenal shooting performance from Martin, Brooks, and Budinger to pull a win out of this, but it's certainly possible.

This is a great start

2 fouls on Dwight Howard in the first two possessions of the game? Yes!

The clanging off the rim....

even in gamecast, is an aweful sight…

Martin..?

Sorry I missed the beginning…. what wasn’t Martin in the game?

by apollosun on Feb 24, 2010 8:07 PM CST reply actions

He was. He did well when he got the ball, but he sure didn’t get the ball much.

I think #12 is cursed.

He needs to change it.

54-36 Orlando

Martin is 0-5 from the field and is a -18.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 24, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

We're not missing Ariza ... Martin is channeling Ariza LOL

Why is Gortat showing off? Two dunks already. We know, we know, we didn’t want to overpay you

Either we play Martin and help him regain his shooting touch. Just drive, man, drive into the lane

Or we play Chase who is hot until he gets tired. Why is Scola not getting looks?

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

we want Jordan Hill

by DizzyKC on Feb 24, 2010 8:40 PM CST reply actions

Or because they just came off a back to back then practiced two days in a row? Just maybe?

by OremLK on Feb 24, 2010 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

No Lowry out hurts a lot

I know you’re a major Brooks fan, but this team is not that good without Lowry.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 24, 2010 8:52 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t think you can say anything about how good or not good the team is right now. We won’t know that until they’ve had the chance to rest and learn how to play together. This is basically the pre-season all over again right now.

Also, I’m not that big of a Brooks fan, but over at ClutchFans they seem to be making him the new scapegoat and whipping boy, which I find absolutely ridiculous.

by OremLK on Feb 24, 2010 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

I only see one thread (though gigantic) bashing Brooks

he’s a polarizing player. He scores a lot, but how many points does he give up on defense?

Regardless, we’re seeing the value of Lowry in this stretch of games. When Lowry was playing, we destroyed Memphis @ Memphis. Would this current team be able to duplicate that? Not even close.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 24, 2010 8:59 PM CST up reply actions

They’re bashing Brooks all over the forum, especially in the game/post-game threads.

And while I agree Lowry is valuable, I don’t think you can tell whether the current slump has much to do with his absence.

Primarily we’re looking at a situation where the rotations are completely and totally different all the sudden with four new players being incorporated and things being mixed up quite a bit. It’s also too small of a sample size to be able to tell anything with any kind of reliability. We’re talking about a few games here and that’s all.

by OremLK on Feb 24, 2010 9:04 PM CST up reply actions

well, they need a scapegoat and ariza is out this game LOL

me, I’m not working for a playoff berth anymore but just for this team to improve our play

we just need to get the new guys comfortable and playing

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 8:42 PM CST reply actions

Great game for Battier so far…Scola and Martin need to get hot in the 2nd half if we want to pull a W.

by k.skirata on Feb 24, 2010 8:47 PM CST reply actions

I agree, we NEED LOWRY!!!

Looking at our past games, our assists are WAY down… and Martin is not going to fix that

by Carlos_HoustonSportsFanatic on Feb 24, 2010 8:57 PM CST reply actions

On the plus side, Chase continues to play very well.

I had talked here about how for a while he hadn’t been the same since that ankle injury, but he’s definitely improving now.

yeah, i think his form is back

nice pass from chase to martin for a three, he knows martin needs to build his confidence

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

martin with the basket

after a nice spin move…rockets down 21 with 4:30 left in the 3rd

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 24, 2010 9:07 PM CST reply actions

we need a playmaker who can bring in the new guys together.

by raong on Feb 24, 2010 9:11 PM CST reply actions

martin hits a 3...

rockets down 18 with 248 left…if they could push it to a 10-12 pt game by the end of the quarter that would be great

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 24, 2010 9:11 PM CST reply actions

seems everyhouston is getting getting his wish for us

i’m rooting for you everyhouston! wish harder!

by raong on Feb 24, 2010 9:21 PM CST reply actions

martin nice spin move...

we can use a nice defensive stop then a 3 to pumpj up the crowd

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 24, 2010 9:24 PM CST reply actions

honestly

if we had yao to stop howard we’d win

by T-Mackin on Feb 24, 2010 9:27 PM CST reply actions

hm

can’t believe i never thought of that or noticed it. i always imagined they would work around yao since he’s been a huge centerpiece for this franchise.

by T-Mackin on Feb 24, 2010 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

it was yao who's thinking about whether he will pick up one year extension with us or extend his contract

i mean it’s good we got martin because yao will know we want to play halfcourt offense also

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 9:37 PM CST up reply actions

scola?

not playing cause he wasnt playing well? or injured?

by T-Mackin on Feb 24, 2010 9:37 PM CST reply actions

couldn’t score inside and had difficulty stopping Orlando bigs

when we went down by more than 20 pts, RA started experimenting

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

ab

getting terrible calls…terrible call on that foul…when he gets touched like that he gets no call…

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 24, 2010 9:37 PM CST reply actions

hayes?

has he played at all…just been here for 2nd half and havnt seen him

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 24, 2010 9:39 PM CST reply actions

even if we lose this game, there are things we can be happy about

martin needs space to work his moves but he showed us his moves, good as advertised. now he needs to show us longer stretches of good play

chase’s shooting is also back. Armstrong got some playing time. david challenging dwight

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 9:44 PM CST reply actions

Not sure you can count on Kev much this year...

I still think the wrist is an issue plus all the crap he has been through… this will be an adjustment period, then again when Yao comes back… but then things should get rocking. He will make ya happy to have him… BTW… Kings still suck without him, so he was not the problem!

Hard work beats talent when talent is hardly working...

by kromeace on Feb 24, 2010 9:45 PM CST reply actions

yeah, we are a very patient team, look at ariza

we’re doing everything we can to help kevin regain his shooting touch and confidence. he had a great 3rd quarter, vintage martin

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 9:57 PM CST up reply actions

And that does it

wow, Howard hasn’t missed a shot yet. 10-10

by goingforthecorner on Feb 24, 2010 9:45 PM CST reply actions

This game is a step in the right direction for us

I think with this game, our chances for playoffs have become dim so coaches will do more experimenting.

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 9:46 PM CST reply actions

rockets saving some money

closing the lights right after the game….smart move…need more money for morey to buy picks

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 24, 2010 9:50 PM CST reply actions

RA is getting old for his job

by raong on Feb 24, 2010 9:51 PM CST reply actions

And don’t say Von Gumby.

So, anyone else impressed with Chase's defense?

It was actually pretty good. Vince made some “holy crap” shots towards the end, but that’s to be expected from him. I think Chase is at this point probably our second most valuable wing, given his youth and contract.

Minnesotan Rockets fan

by Barragan on Feb 24, 2010 9:57 PM CST reply actions

and nice court vision too! chase can play.

by raong on Feb 24, 2010 10:00 PM CST reply actions

why didn't battier shoot more often?

when shane’s hot, he’s hot, and it’s not insane for him to make 5 or 6 threes in a game, he shot so few…

i think with yao we win this game hands down. there’s no way yao lets howard shoot like that, add in yao’s offensive game and the extra opportunities for brooks, budinger, martin, and battier and i say this goes 10+ pts in favor of the rockets

also, budinger ftw

by lawlruschang on Feb 24, 2010 10:01 PM CST reply actions

AB was pushing it towards the end

but AB is one of our go-to guys so I’m not really unhappy about that

by RoxBeliever on Feb 24, 2010 10:03 PM CST reply actions

where did kevin martin go in the fourth quarter?

AB needs to pass a little more (even though he had 8 assists). he is forcing up too many bad shots. martin played a lot better. he got to the basket at will, and those open jump shots will fall eventually. i do agree that he should change numbers, he has rafer’s number. it is cursed.

Yes, he needs to find a way to make the shots our guys take go in the basket.

Not sure what that way is, mind you.

And he’s too canny to say “There were times our offense looked like a goat rodeo, we didn’t have any solution to Dwight Howard, other than Battier flying around the court like a maniac, and we continue to give away the ball on silly or lazy passes.”

I miss him too,

But hang in there, I think Martin is going to be very good here. We still don’t have the high pick and roll down, when we do…
