NBA Owners Lose Their Minds
The proposal, a source familiar with talks said, includes rollbacks that could reduce maximum guaranteed salaries, both for veterans such as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, as well as up-and-comers like Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose, to almost a third of what they would have been eligible for under the current agreement.
Perhaps the biggest shocker: The owners' proposal includes a provision that would require any pre-existing deals to be revised to conform to the new deal's limits.

thats interesting
i wonder how these proposals will affect trading this off season.
will GM’s just wait it out to see how things are going to play out.
its not going to happen but it would really change things. and i am pretty sure at least 1 player would sue the nba

Well anything they propose after this is going to seem reasonable.
Significant gravitas shortfall expected in 2010.

A lot of teams are losing money.
This is what is making DM hesitate on going for the big contracts as well.
That plus more parity/balance in the league should be part of Stern’s agenda.
Legally though I don’t think contracts can be rewriiten. Lots of lawsuits.

what?
“legally”? Any two parties can legally agree to amend a contract. If the NBA-PA and the owners agree to reduce salaries by a certain amount, it’s by all means legal. The NHL did that very thing just a few years ago.

It would be legal, just stupid for them to agree to
And this would be MORE of a reason to sign guys to ludicrous contracts because they’d just be brought to par, not less

So they think this is street football in the neighborhood?
And that they can just call a do over? Or an “I wasn’t ready”??

Amazing.
I understand setting up a new bargaining agreement, a new cap, etc. But to retroactively renegotiate a contract by fiat? Who the hell would go for that? If a team files Chapter 11 and pays cents on the dollar, so be it, but this? Wow. How do they expect to make the other party to the contract swallow this?

you never know
Somehow every NHL player bought this argument after the lockout.
NBA players suck at saving money. If the NBA locks them out for an extended time, the players may do anything just to get back to work. Even for reduced salaries.

A hard cap will drive down salaries effectively
without needing to change existing contracts.
It’s not the players’ fault if some GMs are incompetent enough to award overinflated contracts. The salaries of the elite players I think are well-deserved.

If the owners want to play hardball on salaries, then the players can demand a shorter season. It’s their health and bodies and future that is tied into the game.

Guess they don't think much of the Olympiakos....
Would have thought they would be scared by how much money that greek team will be willing to pry away some stars from the nba.
