Martin's impact on Ariza.

I've been thinking about it for the past few days, and I really wonder... How will Trevor perform now that he is no longer the go to guy? (Okay you could argue that Brooks was also the go to guy, let us get passed that) I know most of us did or SHOULD HAVE realized that Ariza would never put up the kind of numbers we hoped when he was given open reign to shoot as much as he liked. However, now that we have "Speed Racer" he would not be required to have the same amount of offensive responsibility as he had earlier in the season.  I'm just curious what type of impact that will have on his game. He has been out for a few games because of the injury, but I am curious to see how he will play now that he is going to be paired up with a much better 2 guard than himself. The first few games I'm not expecting much out of him because he is coming off of an injury, but is anyone else curious how much of an impact this will have on Ariza's game when he is back in the line-up?

i wonder...

since Ariza is expected to play saturday what is our starting line-up gonna look like will he go back to starting and martin back to coming off the bench or what i think should be

PG- AB
SF- T. Ariza
C- Chuckwagon
PF- Scola
SG- K-Mart

having battier coming of the bench once our Offensive minded starting line up puts up some huge numbers seems the best rotation i can come up with with Air Bud and Anderson giving chuck and ariza some relief. Man this team really misses Lowry hope he gets back soon

I can’t wait for Lowry to get back. Kevin + Lowry+ Yao is going to be a Free throw game everygame. Get excited rockets fans.

i think

ariza will make for a much more efficient offensive game

Yeah...

Trev was never really an SG. He should have been in the SF even before Martin arrived.

trevor's biggest challenge is to accept martin is better than him.

i would argue that

basketaball has two sides, offense and defense. Where martin is better at offense then ariza, the gap between ariza and martin on defense is way larger then it is on offense. I would rather have ariza simply for the toughness and the D. I would trade you casspi for ariza straight up

Let's get that arranged.

Significant gravitas shortfall expected in 2010.

Ariza just needs to realize his place and relax

He was playing under too much pressure before K-Mart and now he knows he doesnt need to score as much. Hopefully he will be more aggressive and concentrate on defense even more.

i think battier should come off the bench

if only so that ariza would not feel the need to be the number one option…

i could imagine that if ariza were to come on with the second unit, he would feel much more responsibility to take over the offense, intentionally or not

whereas having battier come in with the subs is a huge advantage because he’s a good floor leader who can keep the second unit cohesive, especially now that landry is gone. Since aldeman likes to use different combinations of subs, having one designated floor leader of the second unit could really be beneficial. Lowry is good in that respect, but IMO not as experienced as battier.

moreover, the second unit tends to be streaky offensively (budinger, anderson), and average on defense, so having battier could be a stabilizer

just my two cents, comments welcome

pretty good

i had been thinking the same

Agreed

And while you didn’t say it, let’s get this clear. There is absolutely no chance that Batier OR Ariza starts IN FRONT OF Martin

Ariza isn't a 2 guard

he’ll be back to slashing and shooting from the wings in no time

hmm...

Brooks, Martin, Scola, Yao, Ariza – 1st string
Lowry, Bud, Battier, Hayes, Anderson

by DizzyKC on Mar 7, 2010 12:10 AM CST reply actions

Dont forget about Jeffries

He’s been playing his way into more minutes and past Hayes defensively. We will need him for defense on centers when Yao gets rest.

But that is a rather nice looking depth chart.

with taylor…and also our 1st rounder next year

i seriously doubt

Jeffries will get that much playing time next season. he is a situational guy

by batman713 on Mar 7, 2010 10:10 AM CST up reply actions

a situational guy who is playing very well.

He is currently our tallest player and possibly our best defender. He can hit shots inside 12 feet, unlike Chuck, makes his layups, blocks some shots, and provides some good experience. Jeffries is really underrated because of his contract. He doesnt deserve as much money as he is making, but he is a viable backup PF/C option for a team with Yao and Scola starting.

chuck wagon

is also a terrific post passer

wtf is wrong with everyone in this thread

you want BATTIER coming off the bench? He’s our defensive specialist, the guy who guards the best player on the opposing team 80% of the time. Remember last year when Artest was supposed to come off the bench? Same thing goes with Ariza. I mean, in Adelman’s system, it doesn’t matter who starts cause by the end of the game, the rotation is so jacked up it doesn’t matter, but come on guys.

by RedRowdy420 on Mar 7, 2010 1:47 PM CST reply actions

Personally I want Battier starting but not for the same reasons as you

Ariza or Jeffries is our best defender now. Battier has lost a step over the past year and is not as good of a defender because of it. I want him starting because I feel he provides valuable leadership to a young starting group and because I think Ariza, Lowry, Bud, Jeffries, Andersen is a much better 2nd group than Battier, Lowry, Bud, Jeffries, Andersen.

Watching Tonights (Detoit) Game Illustrates Your Point

Shane made some very un-Shane-like errors tonight. He pulled the ball back in a 3-2 situation, and he failed to come back and play transition D multiples time, all of which ending in Prince dunks.

I’ve been of the opinion, and still believe, that the Rocket’s organization believes in the need to have a superior defensive wing defender in the starting line up, and Trevor is being bred as Shane’s replacement. I don’t think he ever showed all that much offensive promise aside from having the potential to become a spot up shooter.

Either way, I wouldn’t be surprised if Coach Sleepy went either way. But if Battier were the starter, I’d have to believe its because of his importance as a floor leader. I consider Trevor a stronger defender at this point in their careers.

I wrote it below but you are on point

Shane is on the downhill (I still love him though) and Trevor’s athleticism was brought here to meld with Shane’s prep.

When Morey trades Shane with others to get Bosh, or the like, none of you should be surprised.

Ariza wont except a roll off the bench well

The rockets management has made trevor feel like he is a first tier player, which he clearly is not. I don’t think he will take a bench roll well after his huge 5 year contract. I know it sounds ridiculous but if you think about it, its probably true and could potentially fuck up the team chemistry. You’ve seen trevor act like a baby and bitch at abz for not deferring to him at times. I’m not saying its okay but its the situation we’re in. Shane is much more professional, I feel that he will take coming of the bench a lot better. When it comes to his leadership, the ones who need it most are the new guys that play in the second unit anyways.

by Ron E on Mar 8, 2010 2:39 PM CST reply actions

Trevor's not going to come off the bench. Though you are right that it would be an awful idea mentally for him.

He has little to no skillset for that. Battier is a good shooter that has turned into a terrible one because he’s being forced to play too many minutes. He’s older now and is making some errors because his athleticism is starting to tail off. And don’t be mistaken, Shane was damn athletic, just not fast. Trevor was brought to Houston because he is a more athletic Shane Battier. He’s here with Shane for his last two years to learn how Shane goes about game planning. Ariza’s insane athleticism with Battier’s prep would make him Super Batman.
