Daryl Morey is one of the greatest G.M's in the league, but I am sure you already knew that. He's made trades to sell high and buy low. Essentially bringing moneyball to basketball. And most of the time we end up with the better end of the deal.
Recently there was also alot of discussion concerning the rockets' title hopes with Aaron Brooks at the helm.
This got me thinking about how much Aaron Brooks is really worth. More after the jump.
To be honest its hard coming up with things to not like about the guy and much easier to come up with good things about the guy.
Good things about Aaron Brooks:
- He is young
- He is a proven scorer
- He has shown he is capable of making clutch shots when the team needs him
- Stays Healthy
- He was just awarded the Most Improved Player award
- He is a high Character person, or at the least is not a problem in the locker room.
- He looks good the red suit and bow tie.
- He is an elite level point guard.
- His contract is still really nice.
Bad things about Aaron Brooks:
- Has trouble on the defensive side
- Struggles to make good passes at times
- Plays poorly against bigger more physical point guards.
- He is short
All of brooks strengths are things that most g.m's really look for in players and things like defense are things that dont seem to be looked at as much. That last statement could be entirely wrong, but it just seems to me that people want to look more like the d'antoni suns and the raptors than the rockets. All of this makes Aaron Brooks pretty valuable as a trading piece. Combine that with Kyle Lowry waiting in the wings.
First of all a quick look at Brooks vs Lowry.

Aaron Brooks is a better scorer than Lowry... but thats about it. In just about every single other category Lowry is better or not that much worse. Theres alot to be said for scoring points but last year that wasn't the team's weak point. Im not saying that Lowry is better than Brooks though certainly that argument has been made, I am just trying to say that I don't believe that the drop off from Lowry to Brooks is all the great. We also have Sergio Llull over in europe. We can pick up a point guard number 3 somewhere else. Esentially this all adds up to the point guard position is something of a strength of ours.
It would be better to disperse that strength to other places as well.
Including Brooks as a part of a larger trade would make any deal much more likely to happen. Im sure toronto or any number of other teams would love to get Aaron Brooks.
Hypothetically say Brooks and Ariza and jeffries to Philadelphia for Iggy and a first round draft pick? Dont get me wrong I am one of Ariza's biggest fans but you should go for the upgrade when you can, and I am sure Philly wouldn't mind getting an Iverson 2.0 who can become their starter long term. I actually think Brooks learning from Iverson would make him a much better basketball player. Ariza isnt a bad basketball player either and his contract is much nicer than iggy's which is something that I am sure would appeal to philly which seems to be having some financial issues at the moment. Lowry becomes the starter and Sergio the backup at point guard.
A quick list of teams that may need/want a point guard:
Portland, New Jersey, New York, Philly, Toronto, Indiana, Detroit, Atlanta( bibby is getting older?), Bobcats, Miami( 0fer is their starter i believe)
its a quick list. there may be a few other teams and some of these teams may not need anything.
So let me know what you guys think?
