Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

Per Jonathan Feigen:

The Rockets are still hoping to add a backup center and have made an offer to Bulls free agent Brad Miller. Miller’s agent Mark Bartelstein said Wednesday that nothing had changed, with Miller continuing to consider his options including the Rockets.

"We really have an unknown with Yao (Ming)," Adelman said. "We didn’t know how he’s going to come along. The one area we have a big hole is, what are we going to do at the center spot. It’s still a real, real question mark.

We looked at all the big guys out there. We don’t want to go through the season again having to play Chuck (Hayes) or that small again there (at center). I think it wore us down."

But I’d be shocked if it was anything more than the LLE.

My money is on him going back to Chicago.

ha

it’s okay, not necessary. thank you though.

I don’t see him going to Chicago, though.

I just think

Chicago will pay him more than us. At his age, it could be his last contract. So that HAS to play a large part in the decision.

by Mike Kerns on Jul 15, 2010 10:01 AM CDT up reply actions

That's where I disagree

They’re looking for upgrades elsewhere (defense and 3-pt shooting) and his range / skill sets don’t seem like they fit the Chicago need dept. Korver, Reddick, Brewer, etc. Those are guys I think Chicago is willing to spend on, more so than bigs, especially considering they have Gibson now to spell Noah and Boozer.

I think he might realize

That a Bosh / Miller / Z frontcourt is swiss cheese, and may go elsewhere (namely, here). Or he’ll be content with 10 minutes and coasting to a couple of rings before he retires.

Either way, our friends over at blogabull have virtually no write-ups on him; rather, it is all about wings, which is what Chicago really needs to beef up on. I agree with their sentiment, and that’s why I think he’s going elsewhere.

Bulls fan chiming in

Finding a SG is definitely a more pertinent issue than backup C, but we have more cap room than we know what to do with right now (especially considering how few free agents left are worth spending money on), and backup C is still a need.

Brad Miller is god.

by Poloplaya14 on Jul 16, 2010 4:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Hopefully Adelman

has some pull with Brad Miller. I’d like to see him suit up for us, but I expect he’ll go back to the Bulls.

Well that’s not what I wanted to hear…

In Reaction

news has broken that Yao Ming, inspired by his coach’s words that he is an unknown, has undergone an experimental surgery. His skeleton has been replaced with titanium bars, entirely. Yao is now known as the NBA’s most indestructable man.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

I really hope we can get him

i think miller comes here...

i think he knows the system (won’t want to learn another one)
I think he wants to get some PT (best chance here, even if yao plays alot, miller will still play)
Hou is a great place to live
No tax, so if Chicago is barely offering anything more, then it makes sense for him to stay here…

Also I hope this offer is a 2 year offer. I’d like to see him here next year too!

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 15, 2010 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

The tax thing

I think is overstated. Once you clock over $500,000 is life really that different? So he earns 2 million a year in Houston, no state tax, or he could be in a state where he has to pay part of that in tax and drops down to something like 1.7 million. When we’re playing with huge totals are you going to notice a small percentage of it leaving? Not like 2 million dollars is an easier life than 1.7 million.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

by BD34 on Jul 15, 2010 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions

And what most people don't think about is

that you still have to pay state taxes on your road games (unless you’re playing in Florida or Texas).

by danielcp0303 on Jul 15, 2010 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think that's true.

I think his salary is paid by the Rockets, and the fact that part of his job is travelling out of state is no different than any other business traveller. Can you imagine an NBA player filing a dozen different state tax forms? What about exhibition games and training camps?

by Moondebah on Jul 15, 2010 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying it's true or not true, I honestly don't know

But that does seem a little ridiculous. Consultants don’t do that when they work in other states. And I travel 3-4 days a week and I don’t have to do it.

by UofTOrange on Jul 15, 2010 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

It's 100% true

that NBA Players have to pay tax when they travel. ESPN or SI did a whole run down of it how players signed in non-tax states file a large bill for taxes when they’re out of town.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

by BD34 on Jul 15, 2010 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Even given this, which is news to me

But I guess makes sense, and I’m taking as 100% legit:

That’s still the vast majority of days in the home state. And the difference between that and what you pay in NY for the same player that is based in TX is astronomical

www.TheDreamShake.com Co-Founder and Writer

by UofTOrange on Jul 16, 2010 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Astronomical

only because we’re working with astronomical sums, not our paychecks. 20% of 10 million is 2 million. 20% of 50,000 is 10,000. One is greater than the other off of sheer number alone but to someone like us the 10,000 missing from 50 is more valuable than someone losing 2 million out of 10. 8 Million dollars isn’t exactly chump change.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

by BD34 on Jul 16, 2010 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

But we ARE dealing with their paychecks here

And there is one irrefutable statement, “Get Money” is 99% of athletes first business operation. So ya, it makes a difference

We're talking about the same people

who manage to walk into clubs throw around $100 bills and rape women, father several illegitimate children, burn through cash like it’s nothing? The money is there, and obviously people want to maximize their earnings, but they’re also smart enough to understand that realistically taxes based on their paychecks aren’t going to hurt their spending habits like, ever.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

My college professor

was an income tax attorney for sports players who lived in the Houston area. She told us that the players have to file state income tax for each state that they played in,who had a state in come tax. They were basically charged by the day. She went on to say that New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, D.C., and California were the highest tax rates.

tax is a huge deal buddy.

I dunno if you have a job yet, but 10% tax is quite a lot at the end of the day.

by AK1111 on Jul 15, 2010 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Totally forgot

that your average working man and an NBA player will feel the same financial pinch. You’re TOTALLY right.

Average income in the US (Standard of living) clocks in around $40,000 annually. 10% of that being $4,000. To us, that is a lot of money because the 10% is a substantial chunk when you make the average.

However, show me one NBA player that makes $40,000. Instead, let’s take the $2 million idea. 10% of 2 Million is $200,000. A HUGE chunk of money. By our standards. What’s left? 1.8 million dollars. I want you to stare at this number $1,800,000. It’s a lot of money in taxes to us common folk but to the money these players make it makes FUCK ALL DIFFERENCE.

Seriously, people need to learn you can’t assume because us, as common folk, approach certain things with a certain attitude, we can’t begin to dream of the money these guys rake in. To them, taxes make no difference because at the end of the day they can still buy and sell our sorry asses 5 times over.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

Wow...

by BD34 on Jul 15, 2010 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

ya cuz buying another ferrari is TOTALLY not on their minds.

I’m sure you speak for all millionaires how taxes doesn’t matter. Wake up dude, they are no different, rich wants the most. Why do you think Warren Buffet pays 18% effective tax last year? He is one of the riches man in the world and have more than than he can ever spend, but he still tries to pay least amount of tax possible.

by AK1111 on Jul 15, 2010 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

He also

dumps a shitload of money into charities and has pledged 50% of his net worth to charity. Then again what I’m saying is the real impact is that it makes no difference. If you want to assume because the ordinary US citizen (stupidly) hates taxation that means multi millionaires agonize over it, you need to work something other than a burger joint.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

by BD34 on Jul 15, 2010 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

You forgot something

When a player makes 2 million dollars the first thing to get deducted is his agent fee of 10%. Then because his contract says he makes 2 million he gets taxed on that amount. So from your example above he pays his agent ($200,000) and his taxes ($200,000) to leave him with 1.6 million.

"If you aren't fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm." Vince Lombardi

by John S on Jul 16, 2010 8:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Fees

vary do they not? Still, even if every agent is unionized to stop at 10%, we’re still looking at 1.6 million dollars, which, let’s face it, the net loss in money is negligible with that kind of bank.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

we need to get

someone ASAP (Like Miller) as a good solid defensive and/or veteran center to back Yao. They don’t just grow on trees.. or do they? Mutombo was a great fit until he got too old.

by Strubs on Jul 15, 2010 2:03 PM CDT reply actions

from clutchfans twitter

With #Rockets salaries at ~$67.6M & Luxury Tax line at $70.3M, anything over ~$2.7M to Scola puts Houston in the tax.

This is without Miller. If we sign Miller, and of course scola, I don’t see Morey not making a move. But He won’t make a bad move just to get out of luxury tax.

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Jul 15, 2010 2:28 PM CDT reply actions

This is what I said a few days ago

by the trade deadline Morey will make a move to get under the luxury tax

by danielcp0303 on Jul 15, 2010 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I still stand by

the Rockets exceeding the luxury tax to win. There’s a reason your big winners aren’t your freugal teams in the NBA (I’m looking at you Memphis, New Orleans, and Minnesota). If this club wants to compete, we need to look at the luxury tax and say “bring it.” We need to win.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

by BD34 on Jul 15, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

on the flipside you have the one of hte highest payroll ever year in Dallas Mavs,

losing in the first or 2nd round of the playoffs. And wtf is wrong with boston paying paul pierce 61 mil for 4 years. That dude is like a 40 mil contract max.

by AK1111 on Jul 15, 2010 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Dallas breaks the bank

and each year they’re one of few labelled contenders, because they’ll spend. LA and Boston do it too. Look where they’ve been the last few years.

by BD34 on Jul 15, 2010 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

We do have players that could be traded and still have a really good team

Jeffries and Battier have expiring deals. I don’t think they wanna pay the luxury tax just to keep Scola and Lowry.

yea

With Chase Budinger coming along i don’t know how much playing time Shane will see and as for Jeffries…well, just get rid of him for a trade exception or something.
