Ouch! Lets hope it never comes to this.

Hopefully Yao said this for domestic Chinese official consumption, to keep off his back for playing for China in the Olympics, but lets hope that is all it is:

BEIJING (AP)—Houston Rockets center Yao Ming(notes) says he may quit basketball after next season if he doesn’t fully recover from his foot injury.

In comments to Chinese state media Monday, Yao sounded far from optimistic about his future and also made a rare criticism of China’s national basketball program.

Yao missed last season after foot surgery. He tells Xinhua News Agency he doubts he will play at the 2012 London Olympics. He says if the injury does not heal next season he “might choose to call it quits.”

Yao also says Chinese basketball administrators were too focused on the Beijing Olympics and neglected developmental teams and the domestic professional league.

Which is why I’m glad he didn’t opt out of his contract. We all knew this but this is the 1st time he’s said something about it. I’m done with long term injured players and I’ll like him more if he does call it quits instead of pulling us along with iffy seasons. Where he goes we go and he’s got one more shot at that.

Excellent...

John P and Mellowman both noticed the all-important “might” and “if” in Yao’s announcement. I hope everyone else does too. I’m scared to wander over to Clutchfans and hear that the sky is falling.
