In comments to Chinese state media Monday, Yao sounded far from optimistic about his future and also made a rare criticism of China's national basketball program.

"If the foot injury does not heal next season, I might choose to call it quits," he said.

====================================================================

And just like that, the sky is falling in Rockets nation. Feigen seems to think it is just him letting the Chinese National Team know that he won't be playing for them again anytime soon and he isn't worried about it. Neither am I. But I've also ever been the skeptic about this surgery being a 100% sure fix. So, I will stick with the wait & see approach like I have been.

No doubt.

I gotta be honest – I felt a lot better when we got Miller signed.

Well duh.

If the foot doesn’t heal, he’s done. That’s common sense. Now if he says the foot isn’t healing, we have a problem, but until then, not concerned.

Though Clutchfans should be melting down right about now, I guess.

Exactly

Why is this even news?

It says might. Of course he might. Not like anyone is going to expect anything out of him anymore if there is another setback anyway.

I'm not surprised by this news

I always figured that if Yao’s foot doesn’t heal or he gets severely injured again this season then he’s done.

I don’t know about you guys, but surgery and months of rehab doesn’t sound very fun. There’s probably a point in an athlete’s life where they are just done with that. Yao’s 30, he’s had a pretty good NBA career thus far, not anywhere near what we thought it would be, but not a failure. So I can’t blame him for not wanting to go through all the pain if it doesn’t work out this year.

I take such quotes (translated and out of context) with a grain of salt. It is too early to jump to conclusions.

I'm only 22

and I didn’t really start loving basketball until the 2nd 3-peat run for the Bulls, so Yao Ming is the best big man I’ve ever seen with my own eyes. Shaq was dominant too, but he didn’t have the skill Yao does. If Yao retired after this season, would be the saddest thing ever. He’s the ultmate teammate, he works so hard, and to watch him live is one of the most amazing things you could see on a basketball court. I still think it will get better and he’ll play for a few more years though. If you love basketball, you don’t wanna see this guy call it quits.

Sorry.........BEIJING SHARKS!!!

If you head over to ESPN’s full article and read deeper into Kerns’ article here, you can read through the lines…..‘Yo China you’re not good enough for me to risk my career over.’

So before this Rocket’s fan starts to look at the situation like his foot will end his career here in Houston, i’ll continue to read over “I’m 30. As an athlete, I am not the future of China basketball anymore”.

OVERBLOWN clap clap clap clap clap OVERBLOWN

Not a deal, much less a big one. Just common sense. And no where do I see where this was said in English and anything but an extrapolation to mean he meant the NBA and not just the national team. This is step 2 or 3 in Yao playing ONLY in the NBA.

Twitter of Feigen

endorses the idea that this was more Yao trying to tell China to fuck off, which it’s about time. I think he’ll be fine, his recovery is on pace and to expect Yao to put up 25 and 12 is ridiculous, he’ll have modest numbers this year but he’ll still be integral. It’s about time he gets to focus on the Rockets.

I'm always right, this isn't conjecture, merely statement of fact.

I disagree with Feigen

Yao isn’t the type of person to send cryptic messages to China through the media. I’m sure he was just being honest about the situation. It’s not like this should shock anyone that there is a chance that he will retire if he gets injured again.

if anything

This kind of journalism (and the subsequent reactions to it) are demonstrative of the larger problems people have with simple reading comprehension. Were much more of a ‘read and react’ society than we are a ‘read and scrutinize’ bunch.

I think this is what most of us are saying here, but apparently the Rockets organization aren’t worried. And we shouldn’t be either.

You know,

I spent most of the offseason last year telling everyone to stop parsing T-Mac’s sentences. It looks like I’m going to have to do the same shit this year, too.

He said that he’d rather retire than keep going through surgery after surgery. That’s a pretty common sentiment, and that’s all it means.

what bothers me........

When’s the last time you heard an athlete sound pessimistic about returning from an injury? Most athletes would say “my foot is fine… I’m ahead of schedule… I’ll be ready” whereas Yao is hedging. That makes me VERY nervous.

by grungedave on Jul 27, 2010 3:32 PM CDT reply actions

Well, his foot probably doesn't feel fine.

He has said as much in the past, and Ilgauskas had similar words to say about the procedure back in February (I think it was Feb. anyways).

by Only_A_Lad on Jul 27, 2010 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

And I’d rather have an athlete who’s honest. Than an athlete (like T-mac) who just bullshits about their injuries. If they are injured, they’re injured no amount of posturing about it changes anything.

its reversed psychology..

Yao will be fine..he just downplays his situation..watch the 2nd coming of the great wall…

I think so...

but at least we all know if it turns positively or the other way around, his blood will remain red…Houston Rockets forever..
